Substance P fibres in the anterior segment of the rabbit eye.

Some laboratories have obtained diverging results regarding the presence of substance P fibres in the cornea possibly because different antibodies were used. This has been further investigated by comparing results with several antibodies on identically treated sections from the anterior segment of rabbit eyes. In the uvea all antisera gave identical results showing substance P fibres in the iris and ciliary processes. In the cornea, on the other hand, polyclonal rabbit or guinea-pig antibodies gave high background fluorescence and no immunofluorescence fibres were detected. In contrast, the ba

Histopathology of clinically successful intraocular lens implant.

A 50-year-old man had an intracapsular cataract extraction with placement of a Worst medallion iris-supported lens. After 6 days postoperatively the eye appeared quiet, the cornea was clear and the implant in place. The patient died 17 days postoperatively of subarachnoid haemorrhage. Histopathological examination revealed slight loss of endothelial cells in the upper corneal region, pressure atrophy without signs of repair of the iris stroma, loss of pigment epithelial cells of the iris in places as well as local pigment epithelial cell proliferations. The chamber angle was open and the anter

The mechanism of presbyopia.

Accommodation in humans refers to the ability of the lens to change shape in order to bring near objects into focus. Accommodative loss begins during childhood, with symptomatic presbyopia, or presbyopia that affects one's day to day activities, striking during midlife. While symptomatic presbyopia has traditionally been treated with reading glasses or contact lenses, a number of surgical interventions and devices are being actively developed in an attempt to restore at least some level of accommodation. This is occurring at a time when the underlying cause of presbyopia remains unknown, and e

The distribution of immune cells in the uveal tract of the normal eye.

Inflammatory and immune-mediated diseases of the eye are not purely the consequence of infiltrating inflammatory cells but may be initiated or propagated by immune cells which are resident or trafficking through the normal eye. The uveal tract in particular is the major site of many such cells, including resident tissue macrophages, dendritic cells and mast cells. This review considers the distribution and location of these and other cells in the iris, ciliary body and choroid in the normal eye. The uveal tract contains rich networks of both resident macrophages and MHC class II+ dendritic cel

Uveal effusion in Hunter's syndrome. Evidence that abnormal sclera is responsible for the uveal effusion syndrome.

A patient with Hunter's Syndrome (systemic mucopolysaccharidosis type II) was evaluated for bilateral uveal effusion syndrome. The right eye showed a circular peripheral choroidal detachment for 360 degrees. The left eye showed a larger circular peripheral choroidal detachment and an exudative retinal detachment. Evaluation of the sclera during combined sclerectomies and sclerostomies of the left eye revealed markedly thickening sclera and a reduced number of vortex veins. The surgery resulted in complete resolution of the choroidal detachment and exudative retinal detachment of the left eye.

Uveal effusion attending scleritis posterior. A case report with A-scan and B-scan echograms.

A report is given of a patient with exudative ciliochoroidal and retinal detachment associated with posterior scleritis. The history and clinical findings were similar to earlier described cases and initially led to suspicion of a malignant melanoma. Ultrasonic examination performed by combination of standardized A-scan and contact B-scan technique allowed the diagnosis to be established and the regression of this condition to be followed. There was complete recovery after treatment with atrophine and topical steroids.

Concurrent Occurrence of Trichilemmal Cyst and Nevus of Ota: Case Series.

Nevus of Ota or congenital oculodermal melanosis (ODM) is characterized by brown or blue/gray asymptomatic brown or blue/gray flat lesions of the skin, mucosae, episcleral/sclera, and uvea, which are located near the trigeminal nerve's ophthalmic and mandibular branches. The main ophthalmic complications are glaucoma and predisposition to uveal melanoma. "trichilemmal cyst" is also known as "wen" "pilar cyst" or " isthmus catagen cyst". It occurs in the scalp and mimics sebaceous cysts clinically. The swelling appears smooth in outline and is filled with cytokeratin. An unusual case of a 32-ye

A Case of Syphilis with a Rare Finding: Subretinal Hypopyon.

PURPOSE: To report clinical features and follow-up of a case with subretinal hypopyon due to syphilis infection. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of syphilis admitted with optic neuritis and treated with intravenous pulse steroids without antibiotics. The patient was referred to the uvea clinic in the follow-up because of decreased vision and the onset of multiple retinitis foci. We determined subretinal hypopyon in the left eye and a positive TPHA test. A significant regression was observed in retinitis and hypopyon with antibiotic therapy. CONCLUSION: Before starting a steroid treatmen

Melanocytoma of the ciliary body diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

A 55-yr-old African American man was referred for evaluation of a mass involving the anterior choroid/ciliary body in his left eye. Dilated fundus examination revealed a large, deeply pigmented mass associated with an exudative retinal detachment. Ultrasonography demonstrated an elevated mass which involved the anterior uvea and showed low reflectivity by standardized A-scan. Cytologic examination of fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy from the tumor was interpreted as a melanocytoma. The patient developed a total retinal detachment and secondary glaucoma which led to enucleation of the eye. H

[The nervous system and uveitis].

This paper presents a short review of some inflammatory diseases which involve both the nervous system and the uvea, and of some forms of uveitis whose onset could be neurogenic. Multiple sclerosis and reticulum cell sarcoma are examples of systemic neurologic diseases which can be accompanied by uveitis or pseudo-uveitis. Syndromes such as Behçet's or Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada are characterized not only by a highly severe panuveitis but also by the participation of optic nerve, meningeal, and brain tissues in the inflammatory process. The occurrence of sympathetic ophthalmia and herpetic uveitis c

Sarcoidosis with optic nerve and retinal involvement.

A patient with the typical funduscopic changes of sarcoidosis died following an accident. The histopathological findings in one eye were correlated with the ophthalmoscopic observations made several days prior to death. Gross and histopathological examination revealed that the characteristic whitish-yellow focal retinal exudates, the perivascular exudates with an appearance like candle wax drippings, the preretinal and intravitreal nodules, and the localized tumefactions on the inner surface of the retina and optic nerve head noted ophthalmoscopically were a result of the nodular proliferation

Accumulation of 14C-lidocaine in the inner ear. Preliminary clinical experience utilizing intravenous lidocaine in the treatment of severe tinnitus.

Clinical experience has demonstrated that intravenously administered local anaesthetics have a mitigating effect on severe tinnitus. In an attempt to gain some insight into the mechanism of this effect, autoradiography of the inner ear of young pigmented rats was performed after intravenous injection of 14C-lidocaine. Some accumulation of lidocaine was found in the modiolus, but almost none in the stria vascularis. A large accumulation was observed in other melanincontaining tissues, such as the hair follicles and uvea. The in vitro accumulation of 14C-labelled lidocaine adsorbed on melanin gr

Mechanical behavior of the iris-lens-zonule-ciliary body system.

The mechanical behavior of athe iris-lens-zonule-ciliary body (ILZC) system under intraocular pressure variations, measured with Scan A, is studied on a series of 20 rabbit eyes. The experiments indicate that the ILZC system behaves like a partition between the anterior and vitreous chambers and not like a supporting structural member. The observed behavior is related to previous clinical observations and to the biostructural model of the eye described in a previous paper by the authors.
