[The vacuum chest wall lifter in the treatment of pectus excavatum].

Since 2002, the Eckart Klobe vacuum has been used in our Service as an innovate and non-invasive procedure in patients with pectus excavatum. This vacuum method contributes not only to hold promise as a valuable adjunct in minimally invasive surgery, but also as an effective method to lift and fix the funnel for repairing pectus excavatum in some patients. Our experience is limited to the use of this device in 10 patients, during the Nuss technique. This procedure has been useful for safer passage of the introducer, and as a definitive treatment in a 10 years old girl with pectus excavatum and…

Forceps compared with vacuum: rates of neonatal and maternal morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: To compare perinatal outcomes between forceps- and vacuum-assisted deliveries. Our hypothesis was that the force vectors achieved in forceps delivery will lead to fewer shoulder dystocias, but greater perineal lacerations. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 4,120 term, cephalic, singleton, nonrotational operative vaginal deliveries at a single institution. Outcomes examined included rates of neonatal trauma, shoulder dystocia, and perineal lacerations. Potential confounders, including maternal age, birthweight, ethnicity, parity, station at delivery, episiotomy, atte…

Forceps or vacuum extraction: a comparison of maternal and neonatal morbidity.

To compare maternal and neonatal morbidity associated with forceps and vacuum delivery, data on 150 women delivered by forceps and 420 delivered by vacuum extraction between 1995 and 1999 at Queen Ala Hospital, Jordan were compared. Data included parity, gestational age, infant birthweight, Apgar score, presentation and station of fetal head, indications for forceps and vacuum deliveries, delivery success rate, and maternal and neonatal morbidity. Maternal birth canal and genital tract lacerations were significantly more common in forceps delivery, and there was significantly increased morbidi…

Electric double-sleeved vacuuming microtrephine for lens refilling.

An automated electric double-sleeved vacuuming microtrephine has been developed that consistently creates a 0.8 to 1.0 mm tear-free hole in the anterior lens capsule. This hole is required for lens refilling to retain accommodation after cataract removal. The trephine is double-sleeved. The stainless-steel outer sleeve vacuums the internal anterior capsule; the stainless steel rotating inner sleeve, which has a blade on the head, then slides forward and cuts the taut anterior capsule. All manipulations are controlled automatically by depressing a foot pedal. Using this instrument, a 0. 8 to 1.…

[The intravertebral vacuum phenomenon or gaseous dissection of the vertebral body].

The intravertebral vacuum phenomenon is rather uncommon. It is determined by the collapse of the body of the vertebra with successive aspiration ex vacuo of gas (nitrogen) from the surrounding tissues, which collects under the endplates, causing them to appear disconnected. To date, the one who has reported the highest number of cases is Maldague, with sixty examples. Our report concerns four cases seen during the past five years. According to the most widely accepted pathogenetic theory, this phenomenon represents, together with vertebral collapse and increased bone density, a pathognomonic s…

Forceps or vacuum extraction? A comparison of effects on the newborn infant.

Sixteen women delivered by forceps and 20 women delivered by vacuum extraction (VE) owing to secondary uterine inertia were compared with a control group of 11 women who gave birth spontaneously. The cord arterial pH was lower in the VE group than in the forceps and control groups. Base deficit in both arterial and venous cord blood was greater in the VE group than in the forceps group, probably owing to the longer application and extraction times in VE than in forceps delivery. The incidence of retinal hemorrhage did not differ between the forceps and VE groups. The incidence of cephalhematom…

Impact of vacuum aspiration abortion on future childbearing: a review.

Ever since induced abortion was legalized in the United States, there has been a running controversy over whether induced abortion affects subsequent childbearing; for example, it has been claimed that women who terminate a pregnancy are at a greater risk of miscarrying a subsequent pregnancy or of having a low-birth-weight baby. Ten studies of the later impact of first-trimester induced abortion by vacuum aspiration (the dominant method in the United States) are examined here; they find that compared with women who carry their first pregnancy to term, women whose first pregnancy ends in induc…

Amount of tissue evacuated by vacuum aspiration in therapeutic abortions.

Following therapeutic abortion in 280 patients prior to the 12th week of gestation, and amount of tissue aspirated was investigated. Measurement of the amount of tissue removed by vacuum suction after dilatation of the cervical canal showed a definite relationship between tissue quantity and gestational age. However, there was a wide range of tissue quantity in the various gestational age groups. The amount of blood lost during the procedure also depended upon gestational age. In 71% of the patients less than 100 ml was lost. There was no difference in the amount of blood lost between primigra…

The intravertebral vacuum cleft: a sign of ischemic vertebral collapse.

A gas-density cleft within a transverse separation of the vertebral body, appearing in extension and disappearing in flexion, was observed in 10 cases of vertebral collapse at the thoraco-lumbar junction. The patients were 55 to 83 years old (mean, 68) and 7 of them were on chronic corticosteroid therapy. Such an intravertebral cleft has not been found by the authors in vertebral collapse of tumoral, inflammatory, or traumatic origin and is thought to represent ischemic vertebral fracture. This sign could be helpful in the differential diagnosis of vertebral collapse in elderly patients.

The hazards of vacuum aspiration in late first trimester abortions.

The incidence of somatic complications in connection with legal termination of pregnancy by vacuum aspiration was analysed in 1,123 hospital patients. Special attention was paid to complication rates in relation to gestational age. It was found that the incidence of major uterine haemorrhage increased with gestational period, being unexpectedly high in the 12th week. When anaesthesia was supplemented with halothane there was a significantly higher incidence of uterine haemorrhage that when this anaesthetic was avoided. The results indicate that strict principles for the operation procedure are…

Electrocautery-Assisted Percutaneous Vacuum Aspiration of Dual Aortic Valve Fibroelastomas.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a stepwise approach to electrocautery-assisted vacuum aspiration for percutaneous removal of multiple aortic valve papillary fibroelastomas (PFEs) using cerebral embolic protection. KEY STEPS: Bilateral femoral arterial access; 22-F sheath (right femoral artery) and 16-F venous cannula (left femoral vein, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). Bilateral cerebral embolic protection deployed via right radial approach into common carotids. A 20-mm snare (JR4 catheter) encircles the aspiration cannula. Once tumor engagement is confirmed, the snare is advanced over the cannul…

Vacuum fluctuation induced quantum resource harvesting in triple-layer graphene.

We examine the non-Markovian dynamics and the generation of quantum coherence and entanglement within a triple-layer graphene (TLG) system e … s. Ultimately, our results establish cavity-confined TLG as a highly tunable platform for exploring vacuum-mediated quantum phenomena, providing a framework for the precise manipulation of quantum correlations in graphene-based photonic and optoelectronic devices.

Endoluminal Vacuum Therapy for Esophageal Injuries: Exploratory Analysis of Success.

INTRODUCTION: Endoluminal vacuum therapy (EVT) is a promising treatment for esophageal leaks, perforations, and fistulas, but evidence guiding treatment optimization is limited. In this study, we aimed to identify possible clinical and biological predictors of EVT success. METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective review of all patients who underwent EVT from 2020 to 2025. The primary outcome was EVT success, defined as full closure or reduction of defect size, or failure, defined as nonprogression or increase of defect size at the completion of therapy. RESULTS: Forty-nine patients und…
