Imaging findings of vascular lesions in the head and neck.

Vascular lesions of the head and neck include vascular neoplasms, vascular malformations, and hypervascular lesions, derived from nonvascular soft-tissue elements. We retrospectively evaluated magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography images of vascular lesions located in the head and neck. Twelve patients (seven males, five females) aged 1-68 years (mean age, 35.25 years) were included in this study. Most of the vascular lesions in our study were histologically diagnosed. The lesions were as follows: a hemangioma located in the parotid space (n=1); a hemangioendothelioma located in t

Vascular soft tissue tumors: medical imaging.

Histologically, tumors of the vascular system are divided into three categories. Benign types can be localized (hemangioma) or involve large segments of the body (angiomatosis). Vascular tumors of intermediate malignancy are known as hemangioendotheliomas. Angiosarcoma is one of the rarest malignant soft tissue neoplasms. The authors present the morphological and SI features of 17 histologically proven vascular tumors (16 benign, 1 malignant) examined by MRI. The results are compared with the findings on other imaging techniques. On T1-WI, the tumors are slightly hyperintense to muscle with in

Unusual co-occurrence of hypertrophic inferior olivary degeneration with infratentorial cavernomatosis and orbital cavernous hemangioma.

Hypertrophic olivary degeneration (HOD) is a rare condition resulting from a lesion in the Guillain-Mollaret triangle (GMT), causing transsynaptic degeneration and hypertrophy of the inferior olivary nucleus (ION). The GMT is composed of the dentate nucleus, red nucleus, and ION, and is commonly affected by ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, vascular malformations, neoplasms, or surgical trauma. Cavernomas are a frequent type of cerebral vascular malformation associated with HOD, while orbital cavernous hemangiomas are another rare vascular malformation. The association of these two malformatio

Invasive Fungal Granuloma of the Skull Base Mimicking Spindle Cell Neoplasm in a Young Immunocompetent Patient: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Skull base lesions presenting with proptosis and sinonasal involvement in young patients are commonly attributed to vascular neoplasms such as juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. However, rare infectious etiologies such as invasive fungal granulomas may present with overlapping radiological features, leading to diagnostic challenges. We report a rare case of a 19-year-old immunocompetent male presenting with progressive bilateral proptosis and a large skull base mass involving the clivus, nasal cavity, and orbits. Initial imaging suggested a vascular neoplasm, and biopsy revealed a spindle c

Incidental Vascular Lesion in Explanted Liver: A Rare Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Hepatic small vessel neoplasm (HSVN) is a rare vascular hepatic lesion that is usually an asymptomatic incidental finding. Here we present a case of a 66-year-old male with HSVN who was discovered to have a lesion presenting as a small nodule in an explanted liver. HSVN is a recently described hepatic vascular lesion that has been previously underdiagnosed. It has an uncertain long-term malignant potential, so close follow-up is recommended.

Pyogenic granuloma of the lip - treatment with carbon dioxide slush cryosurgery as an approach in a resource-poor country.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a benign vascular neoplasm most often evident as a rapidly developing solitary, sessile, or polypoid vascular nodule or tumor prone to ulceration or hemorrhage. Bleeding may be episodic, copious, and refractory to pressure, mandating treatment, particularly when on the lip. We describe a 14-year-old adolescent with a PG of the lower lip that responded to carbon dioxide slush cryosurgery, an option that may be of considerable value in a resource-poor country.

Pseudolymphomatous cutaneous angiosarcoma: a rare variant of cutaneous angiosarcoma readily mistaken for cutaneous lymphoma.

Cutaneous angiosarcoma is probably the most malignant neoplasm involving the skin. Three clinical variants of cutaneous angiosarcoma are recognized, including angiosarcoma of the scalp and face of elderly patients, angiosarcoma associated with chronic lymphedema, and postirradiation angiosarcoma. Histopathologically, these three variants of angiosarcoma show similar features, which consist of poorly circumscribed, irregularly dilated, and anastomosing vascular channels lined by prominent endothelial cells that dissect through the dermis. Focally, neoplastic endothelial cells show large, hyperc

Vascular transformation of lymph node sinuses. A process displaying a spectrum of histologic features.

Nonneoplastic vascular lesions in lymph nodes have been infrequently reported. These lesions are believed to be rare and display histologic features ranging from minimal changes associated with vasodilation to vascular proliferative lesions resembling Kaposi's sarcoma. The spectrum of histologic features observed in these cases appears to be the result of the extent and duration of regional lymphatic and/or venous obstruction. We describe two such cases, one presenting in a 66-year-old black woman, after undergoing radical mastectomy for treatment of invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast fol

Outcome Disparities in Caucasian and Non-Caucasian Patients With Myeloproliferative Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: The Philadelphia chromosome-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are characterized by an increased risk of thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications. Large retrospective studies have demonstrated racial disparities in MPN outcomes and attributed this to differences in access to health care. Utilizing a single institution experience, we report outcomes in patients with polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and myelofibrosis in relation to ethno-racial background. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 127 Caucasian (56%) and non-Caucasian (44%) adult patients wit

Tumorigenic potential of carbaryl in the heterozygous p53 knockout mouse model.

The heterozygous p53 knockout mouse model was used to assess whether vascular tumors noted in a 2-year carcinogenicity study in CD-1 mice with carbaryl were induced through a genotoxic mechanism. This knockout mouse model was selected for carbaryl because of the high sensitivity of this model to genotoxic events and its low spontaneous incidence of tumors until 9-12 months of age. Carbaryl was administered continuously via the diet to groups of 20 male heterozygous p53 knockout mice at concentrations of 0, 10, 30, 100, 300, 1000 and 4000 ppm for 180 days. Urinary bladder lesions of bovine enzootic hematuria in Argentina.

Bovine enzootic hematuria (BEH) is characterized by chronic hematuria and neoplasms in the urinary bladder. From 2013 to 2016, 64 bovine urinary bladders were collected at a slaughterhouse in Rosario de Lerma, Salta, Argentina. The animals came from endemic areas where the infestation of ferns (Pteridium spp., Pteris spp.) in pastures is high. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses were performed. A significant increase in bladder thickness of positive cases compared to negative controls was observed (BEH+:7.5 ± 2 vs. BEH-: 3.9 ± 0.8). Samples were classified according to the sever

A Novel Entity Among Vascular Liver Tumors: The First Reported Liver Transplantation. Is It Feasible?

Liver transplant could be considered for certain tumors even if there is still dubious indication, as in the case of hepatic small vessels neoplasms that pose a difficult differential diagnosis with liver angiosarcoma. Liver transplant could be the best choice for patients with stable or slow-progressing tumors, for young patients with impaired quality of life, and when it would use organs that would be otherwise discarded but are capable of affording a good function. Vascular tumors are very heterogeneous cancers and our case represents the first description of a new histologic lesion that ca

Ferumoxytol-enhanced MRI differentiation of meningioma from dural metastases: a pilot study with immunohistochemical observations.

Malignant dural neoplasms are not reliably distinguished from benign dural neoplasms with contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI enhancement in central nervous system (CNS) diseases imaged with ferumoxytol has been attributed to intracellular uptake in macrophages rather than vascular leakage. We compared imaging to histopathology and immunohistochemistry in meningiomas and dural metastases having ferumoxytol-enhanced MRI (FeMRI) and gadolinium-enhanced MRI (GdMRI) in order to correlate enhancement patterns to macrophage presence and vascular state. All patients having extraax

Hamartomas and malformations of the liver.

Hamartomas and malformations of the liver are rare and can lead to diagnostic challenges. Most present as mass lesions that can mimic true neoplasms of the liver on imaging and sometimes on histology, one example being focal nodular hyperplasia. The primary cell type in the hamartomas and malformations can be biliary, vascular, or hepatic. Biliary lesions include bile duct hamartomas and simple liver cysts. Other cystic malformations include the ciliated hepatic foregut cysts and mesothelial cysts. Vascular malformations include telangiectasias, arteriovenous malformations, and hereditary lymp

Metaplastic ossification in a cutaneous pyogenic granuloma: a case report.

Cutaneous ossification may occur in association with a variety of cutaneous neoplasms and inflammatory conditions, such as pilomatricomas, basal cell carcinomas, nevi, chondroid syringomas, venous stasis, and scars. However, it has rarely been reported in pyogenic granuloma, a relatively common benign vascular tumor of the skin and mucous membranes. We herein presented a rare case of cutaneous pyogenic granuloma with ectopic ossification on the big toe of a 37-year-old man, with high recurrence despite repeated CO2 laser ablations. We propose the hypothesis that vascular endothelial growth fac

Primary liver tumors in the pediatric age group: an angiographic challenge.

Eleven children, ranging in age from three months to fifteen years, with primary liver tumors were examined by large volume direct magnification arteriography (2.5--3 ml of contrast material per 1 kg body weight for a single selective study). The following tumors were found: hepatoblastoma (1), hepatocellular carcinoma of the adult type, hepatoma (3), infantile hemangioendothelioma (4), hemangiosarcoma (1), focal nodular hyperplasia (1) and cystic mesenchymal hamartoma (1). Some of the tumors have a quite typical angiographic appearance as infantile hemangioendothelioma, hemangiosarcoma, cysti

Multimodality imaging approach in identifying invasive hepatocellular carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the 5th most common neoplasm and the 3rd leading cause of cancer related mortality worldwide. Early stages of the neoplasm may be treated curatively with liver resection or orthotopic liver transplant. However, HCC has a high propensity for vascular and locoregional invasion, which can preclude these treatment options. The portal vein is the most invaded structure, while other regional structures affected include the hepatic vein, inferior vena cava, gallbladder, peritoneum, diaphragm, and the gastrointestinal tract. Management of invasive and advanced stages
