Airborne lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels were determined at various working sites in industries processing vegetable fibers. On several occasions the amounts assessed with the Limulus assay exceeded those presumed to cause human reactions i.e. about 0.5 microgram/m3. Low values were often found in areas for weaving. High levels of LPS were found in flax carding rooms but levels in jute mills did not exceed those considered to produce reactions in humans. Low values were also found in nontextile industries processing cotton fibers. By and large the variations in airborne LPS corresponded to pre

Real-time, two-dimensional echocardiography was used to document the presence and assess the size and location of vegetative lesions of the cardiac valves and chambers in seven patients with bacterial endocarditis. Anatomic correlation (surgical or autopsy) was accurate in all patients. Two-dimensional echocardiography was shown to be of particular value in determining morphologic characteristics of the lesions since this technique provides spatial information concerning moving cardiac structures. The results of two-dimensional echocardiography were most helpful in determining selected aspects

Persistent vegetative state after severe brain damage was studied epidemiologically in 110 cases from 1973 to 1976. The causes of brain damage were varied. More than one-third of the cases were due to trauma, and about one-fifth were the result of vascular accidents. Three year observation revealed that 65% of the patients died during this period. Mean survival time for dead patients was 38 months. Reactivity, clinical signs, EEG findings, methods of management, and results of various trials of treatment were investigated in connection with the patient's prognosis.

The simultaneous occurrence of pyoderma gangrenosum together with other diseases, most frequently ulcerative colitis, and with disorders of the humoral immune system is known. The etiology of the individual case remains nevertheless unclear in most instances. We report on an otherwise normal patient with normal immunoglobulin levels, who showed, by use of lymphocyte differentiation and functional tests, a nearly complete lack of T-cell reactivity. A substitution with transfusions of fresh blood lead to rapid healing of the clinical picture, which so far had been resistant to long term applicat
