Critical horizontal dimensions of interproximal and buccal bone around implants for optimal aesthetic outcomes: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review was initiated to explore the critical horizontal interproximal and buccal bone dimensions around implants for an optimal aesthetic outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pubmed, the Cochrane and the ISI web of Science databases were searched to identify eligible human studies that reflect on the aesthetic outcome of implants in relation to the thickness of the buccal bone after osteotomy preparation, and in relation to the tooth-to-implant or interimplant distance. Vertical bone dimensions were not considered. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Articles relating horizontal bu

Influence of abutment macro- and micro-geometry on morphologic and morphometric features of peri-implant connective tissue.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present human observational study is to provide morphologic and morphometric analysis of peri-implant connective … n phase-contrast-based tomography (PhC-μCT). RESULTS: Significant differences in connective tissue vertical dimension (aJE-AM) were found between DIV-MAC and both CONV-MAC and CONV-UTM, both by histology and PhC-μCT, with significantly higher values for the last two groups. Moreover, 2D histological analysis did not find significant differences in the junctional ep …

Improving car drivers' perception of motorcycle motion through innovative headlight configurations.

The most frequent cause of motorcycle accidents occurs when another vehicle violates the motorcycle's right-of-way at an intersection. In ad … ider's helmet and two lights on the fork were added to the standard headlight so as to increase the vertical dimension of the motorcycle), or a "combined" configuration (combining the horizontal and vertical configurations). The findings of the first experiment in nighttime conditions indicated that both the vertical and combined configurations significantly increas …

Prediction of the alveolar bone level after the extraction of maxillary anterior teeth with severe periodontitis.

PURPOSE: After extraction, the alveolar bone tends to undergo atrophy in three-dimensions. The amount of alveolar bone loss in the horizontal dimension has been reported to be greater than the amount of bone loss in the vertical dimension, and is most pronounced in the buccal aspect. The aim of this study was to monitor the predictive alveolar bone level following the extraction of anterior teeth seriously involved with advanced chronic periodontitis. METHODS: This study included 25 patients with advanced chronic periodontitis, whose maxillary anterior teeth had been extracted due to extensiv…

Quantifying the Size of the Pterygium Head by Evaluating the Fibrous Area or the Vascularized Area.

PURPOSE: Pterygium is characterized by the development of wing-shaped fibrovascular tissue from the bulbar conjunctiva across the limbus onto the cornea. The purpose of this study was to quantify the discrepancy of the pterygium size between the fibrous area and the vascularized area. METHODS: Color photographs of 146 eyes with pterygia obtained with a single-lens reflex camera system were analyzed by 2 independent graders for width (vertical dimension), length (horizontal dimension), and surface area of the pterygium head using 2 methods: the fibrous method, which measures any fibrovascular …

Taking animal tracking to new depths: synthesizing horizontal--vertical movement relationships for four marine predators.

In animal ecology, a question of key interest for aquatic species is how changes in movement behavior are related in the horizontal and vertical dimensions when individuals forage. Alternative theoretical models and inconsistent empirical findings mean that this question remains unresolved. Here we tested expectations by incorporating the vertical dimension (dive information) when predicting switching between movement states ("resident" or "directed") within a state-space model. We integrated telemetry-based tracking and diving data available for four seal species (southern elephant, Weddell, …

Vertical neglect towards the lower space after bilateral parietal strokes - A case study.

While considerable knowledge has been acquired concerning the involvement of the parietal cortex in horizontal visuo-spatial attention, the understanding of its specific contribution to the vertical dimension remains limited. Here we present the exceptional case of a patient, who suffered from two consecutive ischemic strokes at the same location within the left and right Middle Cerebral Artery (MCA) territory, involving the superior parietal lobule, the supramarginal gyrus, and the angular gyrus. While the first left-hemispheric stroke led to a right-sided neglect, the consecutive stroke in t…

Masseter muscle thickness and vertical cephalometric characteristics in children with Class II malocclusion.

BACKGROUND: Masseter muscle thickness and its relationship with vertical craniofacial morphology have been extensively studied in adults, but data on children are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between masseter muscle thickness and vertical cephalometric parameters in a group of Class II malocclusion growing children. METHODS: The current study design was retrospective and cross-sectional, looking at a sample of 211 growing children with Class II malocclusion between the ages of 6 and 15 derived from two centers. Ultrasonographic masseter muscle thickness measurements and ver

Eruptive tooth movement--the current state of knowledge.

How the dentition erupts, and what controls it, is fundamental to almost all aspects of clinical dentistry, yet the mechanisms behind this have not yet been fully elucidated. When the process continues into space that has been created through toothwear or tooth loss, problems in placing restorations can be encountered. This review examines the possible mechanisms of tooth eruption. Differences between processes in animals and humans are highlighted. The limitations of conclusions drawn from animal studies are then discussed with reference to human dental conditions. The differing forms of over

Facial growth subsequent to Le Fort I osteotomies in adolescent monkeys.

The study goal was to assess qualitatively and quantitatively the craniofacial adaptations following total maxillary osteotomy with and without mandibular autorotation. Six adolescent female Macaca fascicularis monkeys were randomly divided into two surgical groups, and eight others served control. Prior to surgery, metallic implants were inserted in the anterior part of the cranial base, on opposite sides of craniofacial sutures, and in multiple sites of the maxilla and mandible. Group I animals underwent a Le Fort I advancement of 4 mm, while Group II animals had a 5-mm advancement and a 2.5

Maxillary growth following LeFort III advancement surgery in Crouzon, Apert, and Pfeiffer syndromes.

This was a cephalometric study of maxillary growth following LeFort III osteotomy in children with Crouzon, Apert, and Pfeiffer (CAP) syndromes. Nineteen children who had undergone LeFort III advancement osteotomies were followed postoperatively for an average of 5.3 years. Data for horizontal and vertical maxillary growth increments were obtained and compared with data of a control group of unoperated CAP children and with normal data. The findings indicate that horizontal maxillary growth following surgical treatment is negligible (less than 0.1 mm/yr), and differs from unoperated CAP childr

Soft tissue cephalometric analysis for orthognathic surgery.

A soft tissue cephalometric analysis designed for the patient who requires surgical-orthodontic car was developed to complement a previously reported dentoskeletal analysis. To make it clinically practical, the analysis has been reduced to its most relevant and significant measurements. Used along with other diagnostic aids, this soft tissue evaluation will enable the clinician to achieve good facial esthetics for his or her patients.

[Diagnosis of the maxillary dentoskeletal discrepancies in the transverse plane of space].

The dentoskeletal discrepancies of the craniofacial complex in the transverse dimension which usually appear in combination with similar discrepancies in the antero-posterior and the vertical dimension or more ravely by themselves, are of the highest interest for the clinical orthodontist and increase the complexity of the diagnostic procedure in these cases. In this study emphasis in given in diagnostic evaluation of the cases with transverse maxillary discrepancies. Diagnostic criteria which must be taken under consideration both during clinical examination and during orthodontic model study…

Predictability of maxillary positioning: a 3D comparison of virtual and conventional orthognathic surgery planning.

BACKGROUND: Virtual surgery planning (VSP) is believed to reduce inaccuracies in maxillary positioning compared to conventional surgery planning (CSP) due to the elimination of face-bow transfer and laboratory steps. However, there is still a lack of comparative studies for the accuracy of splint-based maxillary positioning in CSP versus VSP. Therefore, the objective of this retrospective, observational study was to compare if splints produced by VSP and CSP reach postoperative outcomes within clinically acceptable limits. METHODS: The planned and actual postoperative results of 52 patients (
