Treatment of acute vestibular vertigo.

The alleviation of vestibular distress using drug therapy is a question of whether treatment with drugs is advisable at all or whether more … olve all of the problem of this disorder. Betahistine can also be used in other forms of vestibular vertigo as maintenance therapy, because it only has minimal side-effects and it has not been shown to slow down habituation.

[Benign paroxysmal vertigo in children].

Based on our examination of 176 patients, we first selected, according to the general standards of diagnosing benign paroxysmal vertigo of childhood (children aged up to ten years, paroxysmal vertigo, ataxia) a group of 78 patients. Using multidisciplinary approach we have thus performed in these children the following examinations: an exhaustive anamnesis, laboratory examinations, clinical ORL (ENT), ophthalmological, neuropediatric examinations, x-ray of the cranium and the temporal bone, audiometric, vestibulogenic and EEG examinations. In the following stage we have, on the basis of the ob…

[Possibilities for quantifying vestibular vertigo].

The problem of the quantification of vertigo is still unsolved. In this article, two methods in the field of visual orientation in which the vestibular system is involved, are proposed. The visual subjective vertical allows to determine the degree of deviations, which is augmented in acute vestibular lesions. - The degree of deviation correlates well with the subjective intensity of vertigo. Both methods seem to be useful in the quantification of subjective vestibular complaints.

Benign paroxysmal vertigo of childhood.

Benign paroxysmal vertigo of childhood is a vestibular disorder characterized by multiple sudden brief episodes of true vertigo with nystagmus usually beginning after the age of 4. The diagnosis is based on the characteristic history, because the otologic and neurologic examinations, electronystagmogram, audiogram, and electroencephalogram are usually normal. The etiology of the disorder remains unknown, although a vascular disturbance of the posterior circulation with ischemia of the labyrinth or vestibular nuclei is most commonly postulated. A review of the literature and five new cases are …

Abnormal insulin levels and vertigo.

Fifty patients with unexplained vertigo (36) or lightheadedness (14) are evaluated, all of whom had abnormal ENGs and normal audiograms. Five hour insulin glucose tolerance tests were performance on all patients, with insulin levels being obtained fasting and at one-half, one, two, and three hours. The results of this investigation were remarkable. Borderline or abnormal insulin levels were discovered in 82% of patients; 90% were found to have either an abnormal glucose tolerance test or at least borderline insulin levels. The response to treatment in these dizzy patients was also startling, w…

Benign paroxysmal vertigo of childhood.

Thirty-three cases of benign paroxysmal vertigo in childhood have been seen at our institution since the disorder was recognized ten years ago. Progression from paroxysmal torticollis of infancy to paroxysmal vertigo of childhood is documented. Ear infections and allergy appeared causative in a few, but not most, of the cases. The most important consideration for the pediatrician is to rule out epilepsy and brain tumor. Parents should be reassured that the condition is benign, and that the attacks will cease in a few months or years.
