Subjective visual vertical perception in patients with vestibular neuritis and sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the subjective visual vertical (SVV) perception in patients with vestibular neuritis (VN) and sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) using the SVV test and other neuro-otological examinations, namely, the vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) and caloric tests, and to clarify which vestibular nerve function is associated with an SVV shift. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed the SVV test in 36 VN patients and 80 SSHL patients. Thereafter, we investigated directional changes in the SVV in the VN and SSHL patients, and compared the results of the SVV test with tho

An unusual case of bilateral vestibulopathy, chronic subjective dizziness and spondyloarthropathy.

OBJECTIVE: Vertigo and dizziness are two common symptoms seen in everyday practice. However, in some cases, making a diagnosis can be challenging. This case report shows the relevance of a careful psychiatric history, which led to the diagnosis of chronic subjective dizziness associated with bilateral peripheral vestibulopathy. METHODS: A case of a 33-year-old lady with multiple episodes of vertigo attack after a minor head injury is reported. RESULTS: A comprehensive audiometric and vestibular evaluation reviewed bilateral peripheral vestibulopathy. The frequency of the vertigo attacks decr

[Otogenic (labyrinthine) vertigo--when the ear fails to keep us in equilibrium].

The peripheral vestibular organ within the bony labyrinth of the inner ear is closely connected to the other parts of the equilibrium system. As a result of its constant active interaction with the other elements, it plays a major role in ensuring that we can maintain our balance. In the event of a disorder, otogenic vertigo can occur. Important evidence of a peripheral-vestibular disturbance is provided by the patient's history of dizziness, and confirmation of the suspected diagnosis is achieved by clinical and other appropriate examinations and tests. Common differential diagnoses include b

Postural stability on moving platform oscillating at high frequencies. Effect of vestibular lesion.

The effect of linear perturbation at a frequency range of 8 to 24 Hz on postural stability was studied in 7 patients with unilateral vestibular function loss. Force platform technique was used with automatic analysis resulting in the sway velocity of the center point of force. In all patients the support surface movement produced increased sway velocity which was significantly greater than in the controls. Tests at lower frequencies (8 and 10 Hz) produced higher sway velocities than tests at higher frequencies (12, 14, 16 and 24 Hz). The results indicate that the vestibular system controls pos

Vestibular function in patients with a large vestibular aqueduct.

Four patients (7 ears) with a large vestibular aqueduct (VA) were examined for history of vertigo and vestibular function. Vertigo was observed in all the 4 patients. The caloric responses were significantly poorer in ears with a large VA than in the controls. On a patient with a large VA who had several attacks of sudden hearing loss and vertigo following minor head trauma, long-time exposure to sunshine, common cold, and exercise, vestibular function tests were performed several times; the caloric responses were found to fluctuate and direction changing apogeotropic positional nystagmus was …

Pre-operative vestibular pattern and balance compensation after vestibular schwannoma surgery.

This longitudinal study aimed to assess the sensorimotor balance strategies before and after vestibular schwannoma (VS) surgery according to the degree of pre-operative vestibular lesion. Thirty-eight VS patients were split in three groups according to caloric vestibular test results before surgery; nine had a symmetrical vestibular response (vestibular normoreflexy), 19 with a decreased response of more than 20% of the affected side (vestibular hyporeflexy) and 10 with an absent caloric response on the side of the affected labyrinth (vestibular areflexy). They underwent pendular rotary vestib

[Postoperative vestibular compensation and facial nerve function after acoustic neuroma operation. Relation to origin of the tumors].

Within the battery of functional tests used in patients considered to have an acoustic neuroma, the use of vestibular examination has been reduced by the widespread use of magnetic resonance imaging. Especially small tumors often show normal or atypical results in electronystagmographic examinations (ENG). The purpose of the present study was to determine the diagnostic value of preoperative vestibular diagnosis in predicting the origin of an acoustic neuroma, as well as the duration of postoperative vestibular compensation and facial nerve function. Sixty-seven patients with intraoperatively

Assessment of Balance Deficits in at Risk Pediatric Populations.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess balance deficits in children at risk due to hearing loss or dizziness. The specific objectives were to: (1) measure the prevalence of poor balance in children presenting with these risks; (2) determine whether vestibular test results can predict balance deficits in these children. BACKGROUND: While vestibular impairment is a known predictor of poor balance, poor balance may also occur for reasons unrelated to vestibular impairment. Poor balance in some children with hearing loss relates directly to the risks to the vestibular system due to its shared ana
