Diverse methods have been used to sample insect semiochemicals. Sampling methods can differ in efficiency and affinity and this can introduce significant biases when interpreting biological patterns. We compare common methods used to sample tephritid fruit fly rectal gland volatiles ('pheromones'), focusing on Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni. The aim of this work was to study the effects of the presence of oxygen on the dechlorination of trichloroethene by a microbial consortium containing D. mccartyi. The 16S rRNA and reductive dechlorination genes of the functional bacteria and the non-dechlorinators were monitored. Ion-selective poly(vinyl chloride) membrane electrodes for the opium alkaloids papaverine and ethaverine are presented. The electrode membranes contain ion pairs of the alkaloids with the anionic counter ion tetraphenylborate. The use of liquid sulfur dioxide as a reaction solvent to promote chemical transformations of alkynes has been explored. First, a combination of liquid SO2 and In(OTf)3 or Hf(OTf)4 as a catalyst allows to perform hydration of aryl alkynes under mild conditions without a direct addition of Brønsted acid. Second, novel catalyst-free conditions for the synthesis of α-vinyl iodides, bromides, and chlorides from aryl alkynes have been developed in liquid SO2 using group I and II metal halides and ammonium iodide as the halide ion sources.

A chromatographic method utilizing a carboxymethylated poly(vinyl alcohol) resin for a more accurate determination of stable haemoglobin A1c (St-A1c) has been developed. The complete separation between St-A1c, labile HbA1c (L-A1c) and HbF was achieved by gradient elution with sodium chloride in phosphate buffer. This high resolution permits accurate quantitation of St-A1c, even in the presence of high levels of HbF or L-A1c. In 142 subjects with normal fasting plasma glucose and normal response to a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test, the reference interval of St-A1c was 2.80-3.98%.
