Effect of Face Masks on Voice Quality Associated with Young and Older Chinese Adult Speakers.

OBJECTIVES: Face masks have become important after the pandemic, but the change in voice when wearing a face mask is still unclear. The study investigated the effect of face masks on the acoustic and perceptual characteristics of voice quality associated with young and older Chinese adults. METHODS: Voice samples of the sustained vowel /a/ and continuous speech produced by 44 older and 61 young adults with and without an ASTM level-3 surgical face mask were recorded and analyzed. Perceptual and acoustic parameters including mean fundamental frequency (F0) and intensity, perturbation measures

Voice outcomes and its impact on quality of life after open airway surgery in children.

INTRODUCTION: Open airway surgery is used to treat severe grades of laryngotracheal stenosis in children. Scarring of the airway following these procedures may lead to voice impairment and impact quality of life. This study was designed to characterize vocal outcome in children submitted reconstructive airway surgery and verify how this correlates to voice related quality of life in this population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Children submitted to open airway surgery that had been decannulated for a minimum of 30 days and had functional speech were invited to participate. Pediatric Voice-Related Q

Effect of Endoscopic Glottoplasty on Acoustic Measures and Quality of Voice: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The voice is an important marker of the transition process to the new gender identity of the transgender person. For 20% of patients seeking voice feminization, voice therapy is not completely satisfactory, and surgery should be considered, with endoscopic glottoplasty being the current practice. While the increase in fundamental frequency (F0) after glottoplasty has been well described, no systematic review of the literature or meta-analysis regarding other acoustic parameters and quality of voice has been performed yet. OBJECTIVE: To define the effect of endoscopic glottoplast

Role of the soft palate in laryngeal functions and selected voice qualities. Simultaneous velolaryngeal videoendoscopy.

The role of the soft palate in normal laryngeal functions and in the production of selected voice qualities was studied by a simultaneous velolaryngeal videoendoscopy technique. For this technique, the Olympus ENF-P flexible nasopharyngolaryngoscope was passed via one nostril to study the function of the larynx, while the Hopkins 70 degrees rhinoscopic telescope was passed via the other nostril to study the function of the soft palate and velopharyngeal closure. A Kay Elemetrics DSP Sona-Graph, model 5500, was used to analyze a complex vocal figure of five consecutive voice qualities, three of

Quality of Life Trajectories After Partial Laryngectomy Versus Total Laryngectomy Stratified by Voice Rehabilitation Success.

BACKGROUND: Although partial laryngectomy (PL) is often preferred for functional preservation, long-term quality-of-life (QoL) outcomes after total laryngectomy (TL) may vary according to voice rehabilitation success. We compared five-year longitudinal QoL trajectories among PL, TL with successful voice rehabilitation (TL-S), and TL with failed rehabilitation (TL-F). METHODS: Ninety-two patients were categorized into PL (n = 52), TL-S (n = 21), and TL-F (n = 19). QoL was assessed from baseline to 5 years postoperatively using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Qual

Classification of Voice Quality Using Neck-Surface Acceleration: Comparison With Glottal Flow and Radiated Sound.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study is to investigate the usefulness of features extracted from miniature accelerometers attached to speaker's tracheal wall below the glottis for classification of phonation type. The performance of the accelerometer features is evaluated relative to features obtained from inverse filtered and radiated sound. While the former is a good proxy for the voice source, obtaining robust voice source features from the latter is considered difficult since it also contains information about the vocal tract filter. By contrast, the accelerometer signal is largely una
