Perception of indexical cues in speech by children and adults with and without dyslexia: Regional dialect and gender identification.

Auditory research in developmental dyslexia proposes that deficient auditory processing of speech underlies difficulties with reading and spelling. Focusing predominantly on phonological processing, studies have not yet addressed the role of the speaker-related (indexical) properties of speech that enable the formation of phonological representations. Here, we assess auditory processing of indexical characteristics cueing a speaker's regional dialect and gender to determine whether dyslexia constraints recognition of dialect features and voice gender. Adults and children aged 11-14 years with

Optimal feature selection for the assessment of vocal fold disorders.

Unilateral vocal fold paralysis, vocal fold polyp, and vocal fold nodules are the most common types of neurogenic and organic vocal disorders. This article aims to distinguish these types of vocal diseases into four different classes for the purpose of automatic screening. Firstly, the reconstructed signal at each wavelet packet decomposition sub-band in five levels of decomposition with mother wavelet of (db10) is used to extract the nonlinear features of self-similarity and approximate entropy. Also, wavelet packet coefficients are used to measure energy and Shannon entropy features at diffe

Robotic Arm: Assistive Technology for Independent Feeding.

Disabilities, such as those caused by spinal cord injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and amputations, can impair upper limb function and limit eating autonomy, requiring third-party assistance. Thus, assistive technologies have emerged as viable alternatives for promoting greater independence and social inclusion. This article presents the development of an educational robotic arm with 5 degrees of freedom for use as a meal-assist robot. A 3D printer was used for the utensils and wood for the base. To receive user commands, a voice recognition module was implemented …

[Music, composers and psychopathology: the psychiatrist's view].

A first reason for the psychiatrist to be interested in music, musicians and their artistic work, comes from the strong biographical and scientific evidence linking mood disorders and in particular, bipolar disorder, to artistic creativity. Moreover, a family association between psychopathology and creativity has been found in several studies. Important changes in mood, but also cognition, personality and behaviour can occur during all phases of manic-depressive illness and these changes have potentially important effects on creativity and productivity. Those changes are usually opposite in ma

What's in a voice? Prosody as a test case for the Theory of Mind account of autism.

The human voice conveys a variety of information about people's feelings, emotions and mental states. Some of this information relies on sophisticated Theory of Mind (ToM) skills, whilst others are simpler and do not require ToM. This variety provides an interesting test case for the ToM account of autism, which would predict greater impairment as ToM requirements increase. In this paper, we draw on psychological and pragmatic theories to classify vocal cues according to the amount of mindreading required to identify them. Children with a high functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder and matched c

Tooth-click control of a hands-free computer interface.

People with severe upper limb paralysis use devices that monitor head movements to control computer cursors. The three most common methods for producing mouse button clicks are dwell-time, sip-and-puff control, and voice-recognition. Here, we tested a new method in which small tooth-clicks were detected by an accelerometer contacting the side of the head. The resulting signals were paired with head tracking technology to provide combined cursor and button control. This system was compared with sip-and-puff control and dwell-time selection. A group of 17 people with disabilities and ten people

Not all dyslexics are created equal.

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia is a common disorder that has traditionally been treated as a homogeneous condition. However, recent evidence indicates that it is a heterogenous condition with several subtypes. For example, studies of the visual system indicate that not all dyslexics have a normal visual pathway. Approximately 75% have a processing deficit in the magnocellular pathway. Our previous study indicated that dysphoneidetic but not dyseidetic dyslexics exhibit a magnocellular pathway defect. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to expand our previous work by also examining dysphonetic dyslex

Top-Down Modulation of Auditory-Motor Integration in Individuals with Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia: The Role of Auditory Working Memory.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether auditory working memory (AWM) training can modulate auditory-motor integration and reduce maladaptive vocal compensations in individuals with primary muscle tension dysphonia (pMTD), a voice disorder characterized by hyperfunctional laryngeal behavior in the absence of organic pathology. METHODS: Twenty individuals with pMTD were randomly assigned to either an intervention group receiving 12 days of AWM training using a frequency pattern recognition paradigm or a control group receiving vocal hygiene education only. Vocal compensatory responses to p

A portrait of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy through history: past milestones and future challenges on the road to understanding and treatment.

This review explores the evolving landscape of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), from its earliest clinical descriptions to current advances in research, trials, and care. We begin with one of the first documented case reports of FSHD, highlighting clinical features that remain central to diagnosis today. This historical context provides the foundation for a chronological overview of key milestones in our understanding of FSHD. These include breakthroughs in understanding its genetic and epigenetic mechanisms, the identification of the pathological processes, key developments in t

Hierarchical Classification and System Combination for Automatically Identifying Physiological and Neuromuscular Laryngeal Pathologies.

OBJECTIVES: Speech signal processing techniques have provided several contributions to pathologic voice identification, in which healthy and unhealthy voice samples are evaluated. A less common approach is to identify laryngeal pathologies, for which the use of a noninvasive method for pathologic voice identification is an important step forward for preliminary diagnosis. In this study, a hierarchical classifier and a combination of systems are used to improve the accuracy of a three-class identification system (healthy, physiological larynx pathologies, and neuromuscular larynx pathologies).

What shapes job satisfaction for middle nurse managers in hospitals and community care? A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Middle nurse managers (MNMs) play a pivotal role in healthcare organizations, acting as a bridge between senior management and frontline staff. Despite their strategic importance, their job satisfaction remains insufficiently explored, particularly within the Italian healthcare context. AIM: To identify the organizational, relational, and professional sources of satisfaction and dissatisfaction characterizing the MNMs' role, seeking to capture the complexity of MNMs' experiences and to foreground their voices and narratives within the Italian healthcare context. METHODS: A qualit

"Invisible, you are letting go of a lot, and you would do it again": a qualitative interview study of the existential thoughts, feelings, and agency of healthy siblings with a sister or brother in palliative care in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Having a sibling is one of the most significant relationships in life. Living with a life-threateningly ill sister or brother receiving palliative care affects the healthy siblings’ life in several ways. Healthy siblings often feel overlooked and neglected and withhold their thoughts, emotions, and fears to shield their parents or themselves, which may cause emotions of fear, anger, anxiety, and depression. Research is limited concerning existential dimensions of life in healthy siblings living with a sister or brother with a life-threatening condition, especially when it comes to

Emotion Recognition and Traumatic Brain Injury: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can lead to impairments in emotion recognition that can present considerable challenges to social communication and the maintenance of interpersonal relationships. This review aimed to estimate the magnitude of emotion recognition impairments in TBI patients overall, and at the emotion category level, and to determine if the magnitude of observed impairments were moderated by modality (e.g., face, voice, multi-modal) of emotional expression, and severity of injury. Searches of PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO, and Medline databases identified 17 studies which satisfied str

Attentional emotional bias in Huntington's disease: The "Hyper-Positive" effect.

In addition to motor symptoms, Huntington's disease (HD) is associated with cognitive deficits, including the ability to recognize emotions (fear, disgust, and anger) from faces and voices, while happiness and neutral expressions are relatively preserved. Yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated both explicit emotion recognition and implicit attentional biases in manifest HD patients to assess whether altered attentional orienting may explain the selective deficit in negative emotions. To our knowledge, this represents the first study of its kind in HD. Twenty patients wit

Speech-evoked brain activity is more robust to competing speech when it is spoken by someone familiar.

When speech is masked by competing sound, people are better at understanding what is said if the talker is familiar compared to unfamiliar. The benefit is robust, but how does processing of familiar voices facilitate intelligibility? We combined high-resolution fMRI with representational similarity analysis to quantify the difference in distributed activity between clear and masked speech. We demonstrate that brain representations of spoken sentences are less affected by a competing sentence when they are spoken by a friend or partner than by someone unfamiliar-effectively, showing a cortical

"A dim recognition." Religion as a font of psychological innovation.

While religion constituted one of the main topics of interest for early social scientists, faith traditions have silently slipped from this central role. When religion now appears in psychological research, it is usually relegated to the position of either the object of psychological investigation (which psychology purports to "explain") or a static piece in the empirical puzzle (as one variable among many when explaining clinical or social outcomes). In either case, religion is generally no longer seen as an equal partner to the social sciences in our attempts to better understand of the huma
