OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to explore several dimensions and potential factors of the mental state of the Ukrainian population during the Russia-Ukraine war which began on February 24, 2022. Specifically, relationships between complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) overall, individual CPTSD symptoms, and prolonged grief disorder (PGD) were investigated. Additionally, differences in overall CPTSD, individual CPTSD symptoms, and PGD were examined concerning various sociodemographic factors (e.g., age or place of residence) and personal exposure to death.
METHOD: The study was con

Exposure to gestational stress is implicated in increased risk for neuropsychiatric disorders in offspring. We assessed association between prenatal exposure to a 1-month period of repeated rocket attacks during the 2006 Second Lebanon War in Northern Israel and emergence of childhood neuropsychiatric disorders from birth through 9 years of age. Children born to women who were pregnant during the war (N = 6999) were identified and compared to children in the same district born a year later (N = 7054), whose mothers were not exposed to rocket attacks during pregnancy. Multivariable regression m

This study examined the correlates of general aggression among a nationally representative sample of male and female Vietnam veterans (N = 1,632). Findings indicated that the rates of aggression for men and women were 41% and 32%, respectively, and men appeared to perpetrate relatively more acts of severe aggression. Correlates of aggression for men included lower socioeconomic status and age, minority status, unemployment, degree of exposure to the malevolent war-zone environment and perceived threat in the war zone, posttraumatic stress disorder, antisocial personality disorder, major depres

IMPORTANCE: Military service members returning from theaters of war are at increased risk for mental illness, but despite high prevalence and substantial individual and societal burden, the underlying pathomechanisms remain largely unknown. Exposure to high levels of emotional stress in theaters of war and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are presumed factors associated with risk for the development of mental disorders.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate (1) whether war zone-related stress is associated with microstructural alterations in limbic gray matter (GM) independent of mental disorders commo

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic, multi-system condition affecting a substantial proportion of veterans deployed during the 1990-1991 Gulf War. Neurological complications, including cognitive impairment, musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, depression, and migraine, represent a major clinical burden. Evidence implicates neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and epigenetic dysregulation as central mechanisms, with emerging data suggesting early tauopathy and sex-specific immune responses. Neuroimaging studies reveal hippocampal atrophy, white matter disruptions, and incre

PURPOSE: Exposure to war and terrorism increases the risk of mental health problems and often leads to economic hardship, which can further heighten psychological distress. This longitudinal study examined the extent of economic hardship experienced during the Israel-Hamas war following the October 7th terrorist attack, the severity of mental health symptoms over the first year of the war, and the associations and temporal directionality between economic hardship and mental health.
METHODS: A representative sample of Jewish Israeli adults (N = 1,035) completed surveys at four time points: two

Empathic abilities are proposed to affect the trajectory from trauma exposure to psychopathology. Yet, studies addressing the role of empathy in refugees with diverse experiences of war-related trauma are lacking. This may relate to missing recommendations on aspects to consider in the planning and execution of such a study. In the present methodological paper, we hence share our experiences in designing and implementing a study on the interrelations of war-related trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and empathy in individuals from Arabic-speaking countries who had entered Germany as refug

An exaggerated response to emotional stimuli is one of the several symptoms widely reported by veterans of the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Many have attributed these symptoms to post-war stress; others have attributed the symptoms to deployment-related exposures and associated damage to cholinergic, dopaminergic, and white matter systems. We collected event-related potential (ERP) data from 20 veterans meeting Haley criteria for Gulf War Syndromes 1-3 and from 8 matched Gulf War veteran controls, who were deployed but not symptomatic, while they performed an auditory three-condition oddball task wi

Background: Persistent armed conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has resulted in large-scale population displacement, exposing many children to traumatic experiences. Although the psychological consequences of such exposure are well documented, its impact on psychomotor development remains insufficiently investigated, particularly in African settings affected by chronic violence. Objective: This study aimed to compare the psychomotor development of displaced children living in Lubumbashi according to their level of exposure to war-related trauma (direct, indirect, or none) and

Objective: The prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its risk factors among adult refugees in the context of war-related forced migration is well established. However, reliable data are lacking on war-related trauma among refugee children and adolescents residing in refugee settlements. This study estimated the magnitude of PTSD and its associated factors among children and adolescents in Nakivale refugee settlement, south-western Uganda.Method: We conducted a cross-sectional quantitative study among 325 adolescent (10-19-year-old) refugees, who were selected using a simple r

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the long-term impact of the killing of a parent in childhood or adolescence during war on distress and disability in young adulthood. This study assessed current prevalence rates of mental disorders and levels of dysfunction among young adults who had lost their father due to war-related violence in childhood or adolescence.
METHODS: 179 bereaved young adults and 175 non-bereaved young adults were interviewed a decade after experiencing the war in Kosovo. Prevalence rates of Major Depressive Episode (MDE), anxiety, and substance use disorders, and current sui

Contemporary peacekeepers frequently confront complex stressors including the need to directly enforce peace between warring factions, to deliver humanitarian aid in the midst of political-social devastation, and to balance shifting rules of engagement. As such, it is proposed that participants may be at increased risk for the development of psychiatric distress. The present study examined the types of stressors encountered by 3,461 peacekeepers in Somalia, their current psychiatric functioning as measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory, and the relationship between exposure to various stresso

Youth in conflict-affected regions are exposed to a multitude of traumatic events. These individuals often witness violence; experience it firsthand; and, in some cases, become perpetrators. The interplay of events shapes systematic trauma histories that may have unique implications for youths' mental health. In a cross-sectional study conducted in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), we interviewed 295 war-affected youth (63.4% boys, Mage = 16.70 years), including former child soldiers (n = 171), regarding their traumatic experiences and mental health. Using latent class analysis, we i

BACKGROUND: Leukemia/lymphoma cases reported in 2001 among United Nation soldiers or peacekeepers deployed to the Balkans aroused alert on the exposure to depleted uranium. Recent epidemiological studies carried out in different European countries among peacekeepers who served in the Balkans failed to demonstrate a higher than expected risk of all cancers but, mostly due to their limitations in size and follow up time, leave open the debate on health risk of depleted uranium. The aim of SIGNUM (Study of the Genotoxic Impact in Military Units) was to identify potential genotoxic risk associated

Wartime toxin exposures have been implicated in the genesis of malignancy in war veterans. Agent Orange, one toxin among many, has been linked to malignancy and the subcomponent phenoxyacetic acid has been associated with soft tissue sarcomas (STSs). This case demonstrates the association between a wartime toxin exposure (Agent Orange) and subsequent cancer development. Ultimately, we aim to highlight the importance of simple, specific questions in the patient history to account for previous wartime toxin exposures.

Similar to major natural disasters and large-scale wars, the events of October 7th and the retaliatory Iron Swords war resulted in both direct and indirect exposure of a significant proportion of the population to traumatic events. A major challenge for healthcare systems in such scenarios is the early identification of populations that develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The medical literature was reviewed to assess whether language models could be integrated into a screening program for at-risk populations and which tools can be used to evaluate the quality of studies describing s

Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms are a prominent feature of Gulf War Illness (GWI). Animal models attribute them to pyridostigmine bromide (PB) exposure, which induces smooth muscle hypertrophy, neuroinflammation, and motility impairment. However, animal studies only provide static snapshots of disease progression and can only partially resolve how inflammatory, neuronal, and biomechanical processes interact dynamically over time. To address this gap, we developed a computational model that couples cytokine kinetics, macrophage activation, and an excitatory-inhibitory neuronal imbalance to predi

This analysis examines the relationship between exposure to American wartime bombardments earlier in life and later-life PTSD among current surviving Vietnamese aged 59+. It also assesses whether the relationship varies by military status during the war - formal military, informal military, or civilian - and whether associations are explained by exposure to violence and malevolent conditions. Data link survey responses from the 2018 Vietnam Health and Aging Study to provincial-wide level bombing intensity using U.S. Department of Defense records from the Theater History of Operations Vietnam d

Though medical consequences of war attract attention, the health consequences of the prisoner-of-war (POW) experience are poorly researched and appreciated. The imprisonment of Allied military personnel by the Japanese during the World War II provides an especially dramatic POW scenario in terms of deprivation, malnutrition and exposure to tropical diseases. Though predominantly British, these POWs also included troops from Australia, Holland and North America. Imprisonment took place in various locations in Southeast Asia and the Far East for a 3.5-year period between 1942 and 1945. Nutrition
