Anogenital warts (AGWs) are an important issue for public health centers dealing with Sexually Transmitted Infections. They are epidemiologically relevant, with significant morbidity and an established effective treatment is lacking. In this article, we examine the epidemiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspect of the problem in order to give an up to date picture of the situation and a practical clue for the management of AGWs.

Genital warts are a major worldwide healthcare problem of sexually active population. Apart from direct association with cervical cancer, male patients experience HPV-related condylomata in several locations in the anogenital area. Extensive growth, multifocality and difficult accessibility wart sites are demanding and often require multidisciplinary surgical management. In our case, we present a male patient with extensive anogenital warts treated by a team of surgeons in several steps.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of viral warts is often straightforward, but their treatment is difficult and always takes a long time. Nowadays warts are usually treated with conventional methods including topical keratolytic agents, cryotherapy, electrosurgery and laser surgery. However, such treatments cause different complications, and the warts become recalcitrant.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of intralesional pingyangmycin injection for resistant plantar warts.
METHODS: From June 2006 to September 2008, we treated 66 patients with plantar warts by intralesional pingyangmycin injectio…

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of the Bacille Calmette-Guerin BCG vaccine in the treatment of viral warts.
METHODS: A single blind placebo controlled study conducted at the Department of Dermatology, Baghdad Teaching Hospital, Baghdad, Iraq from March 2005 to June 2006. Two hundred patients with viral warts were enrolled in this study, and were fully assessed before therapy. The patients were divided into 2 equal matched groups. Group 1 was designed as the treatment group and received BCG vaccine in 1-3 doses with a one-month interval, while group 2 was injected with distilled water. …

A 24-year-old woman presented with genital warts which did not respond to treatment. Biopsy confirmed changes in keeping with a diagnosis of Darier's disease. The patient, however, had no other manifestations of Darier's disease, i.e. family history of skin disease, nail changes or other skin site involvement. We propose that this patient has a form of Darier's disease called genital papular acantholytic dyskeratosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Genital warts represent benign epithelial proliferations induced by human papillomavirus. The goal of treatment is the clearance of visible warts. Different regimens are available. Flashlamp-pumped pulsed dye laser (FPDL) represents one of many treatment options for the management of viral warts (verrucae vulgares), its effectiveness being comparable with that of conventional therapies. We evaluated the effectivity of FPDL light for the treatment of genital warts.
STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was performed to examine the efficacy of FPDL i…

External genital warts (EGWs) are visible warts that occur in the perigenital and perianal regions. They are due primarily to non-oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) types, usually types 6 and 11. Physical examination assisted by bright light and magnification is the recommended approach for primary diagnosis. Biopsy is indicated when EGWs are fixed to underlying structures or discolored or when standard therapies are not effective. Recurrences are common, and there is no single treatment that is superior to others. Among women with atypical squamous cells, molecular HPV testing may be useful…

Recalcitrant viral warts are a troublesome therapeutic problem. Immunotherapy with the universal allergic contact sensitizer diphencyprone (DCP) has been used successfully in such cases. We have reviewed our experience of the use of DCP in the treatment of resistant hand and foot warts during an 8-year period. Sixty patients were sensitized to DCP during this time; the median duration of warts was 3 years. Twelve patients defaulted from treatment. Of the remaining 48 individuals, 42 (88%) cleared of all warts. The median number of treatments to clear was five (range one to 22) and the median t…

Twenty-eight patients with 103 recalcitrant and 20 simple viral warts were treated with the Cynosure PhotoGenica V pulsed dye laser at 585 nm, and fluencies of 6.0-9.0 J/cm(2). An eradication rate of 92% for recalcitrant warts after an average of 2.1 (range 1-7) treatments and 75% for simple warts after an average of 1.6 (range 1-2) treatments was achieved with a mean follow-up period of 7.2 (range 3-15) months. Mild hypopigmentation was noted in one patient and superficial infection in another. Unlike ablative treatment modalities, with pulsed dye laser therapy, no wound was created thus avoi…

Human papillomavirus can produce verrucae, or warts, on cutaneous and mucosal surfaces. Although the diagnosis is usually straightforward, issues regarding the need for treatment and the choice of treatment are complex. The rationale for the treatment of viral warts is based on the prevention of spread to other areas of the body or to other people; the prevention of irritation, bleeding and other unwanted local effects of the wart; cosmetic and psychosocial considerations, and the possible association with neoplasia. A significant proportion of warts resolve spontaneously within two years. Man…
