Improvement of third generation bioethanol production from photoheterotrophically cultivated Chlorella vulgaris in the presence of carrot pomace and onion peel waste.

Microalgae are promising feedstocks, holding great potential for bioethanol production. However, microalgal bioethanol production requires the use of different approaches in order to optimize the process. In this study, the bioethanol production capacities of local yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida boidinii and Kluyveromyces marxianus) from Chlorella vulgaris biomass cultivated with 0.5 g/L carrot pomace sugar was investigated. Onion peel, a common waste product, was used for investigating its potential in improving yeast growth and bioethanol production by K. marxianus. Parameters suc

A sustainable model of transforming waste into biochar-based materials for industrial wastewater treatment and reuse as fuel in the bio-ethanol production process.

This study addresses the challenges in sustainable wastewater treatment and energy recovery by producing biochar (BC) pellets from bioethanol industry wastes, namely cassava peel (CP), cassava residue (CR), and ash (A). The BC pellets were carbonized under anaerobic pyrolysis at 550 °C for 2 h and characterized using BET, SEM-EDS, FTIR, and XRD techniques. Their performance was evaluated for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removal, two key toxic characteristics of real industrial wastewater, while their higher heating values (HHV) were analyzed for potential energy recovery. The CP/CR/A

Role of Combined Na2HPO4 and ZnCl2 in the Unprecedented Catalysis of the Sequential Pretreatment of Sustainable Agricultural and Agro-Industrial Wastes in Boosting Bioethanol Production.

Improper lignocellulosic waste disposal causes severe environmental pollution and health damage. Corn Stover (CS), agricultural, and aseptic packaging, Tetra Pak (TP) cartons, agro-industrial, are two examples of sustainable wastes that are rich in carbohydrate materials and may be used to produce valuable by-products. In addition, attempts were made to enhance cellulose fractionation and improve enzymatic saccharification. In this regard, these two wastes were efficiently employed as substrates for bioethanol production. This research demonstrates the effect of disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na

Optimization of bio-oil production from microwave co-pyrolysis of food waste and low-density polyethylene with response surface methodology.

The applicability of waste to energy conversion technique is facing many issues because of current waste management practices. Focusing on the segregation issue of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) from food waste (FW), microwave (MW) co-pyrolysis of FW and LDPE was investigated in this study. Multifactor optimization of the operating parameters, viz., residence time, LDPE in feed and temperature, was done with response surface methodology to achieve maximum bio-oil yield with a low total acid number (TAN). Bio-oil yield and TAN varied from 17 to 42 wt% and 16-45 mg KOH/g respectively, in variou

Comparative evaluation of pumice stone as an alternative immobilization material for 1,3-propanediol production from waste glycerol by immobilized Klebsiella pneumoniae.

In this study, pumice stone (PS), which is a vastly available material in Turkey, was evaluated as an alternative immobilization material in comparison to other commercially available immobilization materials such as glass beads and polyurethane foam. All immobilized bioreactors resulted in much better 1,3-propanediol production from waste glycerol in comparison to the suspended cell culture bioreactor. It was also demonstrated that the locally available PS material is as good as the commercially available immobilization material. The maximum volumetric productivity (8.5 g L(-1) h(-1)) was obt

A two-stage predictive modeling and data augmentation approach for optimizing co-pyrolysis products from oily sludge and solid wastes.

Co-pyrolysis of oily sludge (OS) and solid wastes supports resource recovery and safe residue disposal. However, complex interactions between feedstock composition and operating parameters hinder process prediction and design. In this study, a two-stage predictive modeling and data augmentation approach was developed using literature-derived data covering oilfield, storage-and-transportation, and refinery oily sludge. In the first stage, a multi-task gradient boosting regression (GBR) model predicted oil, gas, and char yields with high accuracy (test R2 > 0.96). For oil yield prediction, the f

Synergistic improvement of methane production and phosphorus recovery from anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge by Fe2O3-assisted electroactive microorganisms.

Conductive materials and electroactive microorganisms (EAM) are key factors on enhancing methane production in anaerobic digestion of waste actived sludge via the direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). However, their combined impact on simultaneous methane production and phosphorus recovery remains unclear. The Fe2O3 and EAM were added together to synergistically improve anaerobic processes, resulting in a 1.53-fold increase in methane production and a remarkable 12.03-fold enhancement in phosphorus removal. The co-additon of Fe2O3 and EAM promoted Fe(III/II) redox cycling, increased en

Waste yeast of the genus Saccharomyces from the beer, wine, and sugarcane ethanol industries: valorization pathways and perspectives for the production of food ingredients.

Yeast plays a central role in several industrial fermentation processes, including large-scale beer, wine, and ethanol production. Although widely recognized for its fermentative efficiency and robustness, its residual biomass-often discarded or underutilized-represents a rich source of valuable compounds. These include cell wall components such as β-glucans and mannans, which exhibit significant nutritional, functional, and technological properties. The expansion of these fermentation processes has resulted in an abundance of excreted yeast biomass, much of which is used in animal feed or dis
