Evaluation of exposure to trihalomethanes in tap water and semen quality: a prospective study in Wuhan, China.

Trihalomethanes (THMs) have been demonstrated to adversely affect male reproductive health in animals, but the evidence in humans is limited. The study aimed to examine the association between THM exposure and semen quality in a Chinese population. We recruited 324 men from the same water supply district in Wuhan, China between April 2011 and May 2012. Exposure to THMs was evaluated based on their concentrations in tap water measured within 90 days preceding semen collection, the uptake factors of THMs and personal information on ingestion and showering/bathing. We found that TTHM [sum of chlo

Feasibility of the hydrogen sulfide test for the assessment of drinking water quality in post-earthquake Haiti.

In 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti, severely damaging the drinking and wastewater infrastructure and leaving millions homeless. Compounding this problem, the introduction of Vibrio cholerae resulted in a massive cholera outbreak that infected over 700,000 people and threatened the safety of Haiti's drinking water. To mitigate this public health crisis, non-government organizations installed thousands of wells to provide communities with safe drinking water. However, despite increased access, Haiti currently lacks the monitoring capacity to assure the microbial safety of any of it

Is the quality of drinking water a risk factor for self-reported forearm fractures? Cohort of Norway.

SUMMARY: Compared to pH ≥7.0 in Norwegian municipal drinking water, pH <7.0 increased the risk of forearm fractures in the population-based Cohort of Norway (CONOR; n = 127,272). The association was attenuated (p > 0.05) after adjustments for indicators of bacteria and organic matter, which may signify an association between poor drinking water and bone health. INTRODUCTION: The Norwegian population has the highest rate of fractures ever reported. A large variation in fracture rate both between and within countries indicates that an environmental factor, such as the quality of drinking water,

Application, chemistry, and environmental implications of contaminant-immobilization amendments on agricultural soil and water quality.

Contaminants such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), arsenic (As), heavy metals, and infectious pathogens are often associated with agricultural systems. Various soil and water remediation techniques including the use of chemical amendments have been employed to reduce the risks associated with these contaminants. This paper reviews the use of chemical amendments for immobilizing principal agricultural contaminants, the chemistry of contaminant immobilization, and the environmental consequences associated with the use of these chemical products. The commonly used

Derivation of an ambient water quality criterion for mercury: taking account of site-specific conditions.

Mercury is considered to be a serious risk to wildlife. As a result, the Great Lakes Water Quality Initiative and others have developed ambient water quality criteria (AWQC) for the protection of wildlife. These AWQC have been controversial, however, because the AWQC were single values that did not account for site-specific conditions, derivation of the AWQC relied on a single no-observed-adverse-effect level, and the AWQC had an unknown level of conservatism because of reliance on both average and conservative assumptions and uncertainty factors. Rather than develop a single-value AWQC for to

Effect of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-product on water quality at an underground coal mine.

In this paper, a field study was carried out to examine the effect of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-product on water quality at an underground coal mine in central-eastern Ohio. Flue gas desulfurizalion by-product was injected into the down-dip portions of the Robert-Dawson mine in an attempt to seal major seeps exiting the mine and to coat exposed pyritic surfaces. Immediately following grout injection, significant increases in acidity, iron, aluminum, sulfur, and calcium were observed at most surface and ground water locations near where grouting was carried out. Following this initial f

Speciation of inorganic arsenic and selenium in leachates from landfills in relation to water quality assessment.

Speciation of arsenic and selenium was carried out on water samples taken from rivers used as water intake points in the vicinity of landfill areas used for land-based waste disposal system. Leachates from these landfill areas may contaminate the river water through underground seepage or overflowing, especially after a heavy downpour. Preconcentration of the chemical species was done using a mixture of ammonium pyrrolidinethiocarbamate-chloroform (APDTC-CHCl3). Because only the reduced forms of both arsenic and selenium species could be extracted by the preconcentrating mixture, suitable redu

Climate change, water quality, and water diversion are associated with the shifts of aquatic vegetation structure and phenology in five temperate regulating lakes of eastern China.

Aquatic plants are vital for lake ecosystem functioning and water-quality stability, yet their community dynamics and phenology rhythms remain insufficiently understood, due to the lack of effective strategies for fine-scale species mapping and phenology extraction. In this study, based on Sentinel-2 MSI imagery, we developed an integrated framework combining machine learning and a priori ecological knowledge to quantify the spatiotemporal changes in aquatic plant distribution, species composition and phenological dynamics for eight dominant species in five regulating lakes along the Eastern R

Macroinvertebrate diversity as the bioindicators of freshwater ecosystem health: deterioration in physicochemical water quality parameters.

Freshwater ecosystems are robust, biodiverse, and important to sustain ecological balance and human well-being. They provide essential services such as water purification, nutrient cycling, fisheries, irrigation, and climate regulation. However, industrialization, agricultural intensification, and urban expansion have put huge pressure on these ecosystems, resulting in substantial decline in water quality and ecosystem integrity. Among various methods used to evaluate ecological condition, aquatic macroinvertebrates have emerged as prominent and reliable bioindicators of environmental change.

Temporal changes in the water quality and ecology of an alluvial aquifer through an agricultural crop cycle.

Irrigation is essential to intensive agriculture worldwide, particularly in semi-arid climates where rainfall is unreliable. The use of surface and groundwater for crop irrigation can alter aquifer dynamics by lowering water tables and degrading water quality through the leaching of agrochemicals, nutrients, and organic carbon. These changes pose significant risks to the integrity of groundwater ecosystems. To assess these impacts, we conducted a spatial and temporal study of groundwater chemistry and biota (using environmental DNA (eDNA)) in a shallow alluvial aquifer adjacent to an irrigated

Risk perceptions and behaviours of beachgoers toward recreational water quality in Canada: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Beach water leisure activities can increase the risk of acquiring infections from recreational water, and children are particularly at risk. However, gaps exist in public awareness of accessing and understanding beach water quality information and the risk of acquiring illnesses. There is no such available research in Canada, and this study was conducted to explore risk perceptions and behaviours of parent beachgoers. METHODS: We conducted two focus groups in each of three Canadian provinces: Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia in July 2023. Participants were parents or guardi

Paleolimnological evidence for variable impacts of fish farms on the water quality of Scottish freshwater lochs.

Since the 1980s, fish farming (aquaculture) has been an important contributor to Scotland's economy, but there are concerns that nutrient-rich food waste and excreta from these farms are causing eutrophication. Water quality monitoring preceding the arrival and subsequent expansion of the industry is limited. Therefore, to better understand the impacts of in-lake fish farms on the quality of freshwater ecosystems, we examined the diatom records in sediment cores from seven freshwater lochs in Scotland over a timescale of c.100-200 years, spanning the period before and after installation of the
