Soft Material-Enabled, Active Wireless, Thin-Film Bioelectronics for Quantitative Diagnostics of Cervical Dystonia.

Recent advances in flexible materials, nanomanufacturing, and system integration have provided a great opportunity to develop wearable flexible hybrid electronics for human healthcare, diagnostics, and therapeutics. However, existing medical devices still rely on rigid electronics with many wires and separate components, which hinders wireless, comfortable, continuous monitoring of health-related human motions. Here, we introduce advanced materials and system integration technologies that enable a soft, active wireless, thin-film bioelectronics. The low-modulus, highly flexible wearable electr

SMA-Driven Assistive Hand for Rehabilitation Therapy.

Home-based rehabilitation supports neuromuscular patients while minimising the need for extensive clinical supervision. Due to a growing number of stroke survivors, this approach appears to be more practical for patients across diverse demographics. Although existing hardware-based assistive devices are pretty common, they have limitations in terms of usability, wearability, and safety, as well as other technical constraints such as bulkiness and torque-to-weight ratios. To overcome these issues, soft actuator-based assistance prioritises user safety and ergonomics, as it is more wearable and

Design and development of an intelligent wearing system for adolescent spinal orthotics.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is the deformity of the human spine in three-dimensional space. It is a disease with a long course and difficult to recover in a short time. Currently, spinal orthotic braces are an effective non-surgical treatment for this condition. However, existing spinal orthotic braces are still deficient. For example, existing spinal orthotics braces have no way of knowing how correct, effective, and comfortable a patient is wearing the orthotics. Based on distributed pressure monitoring technology, this paper conducts pressure acquisition and compensation research on spi

Lightweight and wearable magnetoencephalography system based on spatially-grid constrained coils and compact magnetically shielded room.

Magnetoencephalography based on optically pumped magnetometers can passively detect the ultra-weak brain magnetic field signals, which has significant clinical application prospects for the diagnosis and treatment of cerebral disorders. This paper proposes a brain magnetic signal measurement method on the basis of the active-passive coupling magnetic shielding strategy and helmet-mounted detection array, which has lower cost and comparable performance over the existing ones. We first utilized the spatially-grid constrained coils and biplanar coils with proportion-integration-differentiation co

A Wearable Assistive Device for Blind Pedestrians Using Real-Time Object Detection and Tactile Presentation.

Nowadays, improving the traffic safety of visually impaired people is a topic of widespread concern. To help avoid the risks and hazards of road traffic in their daily life, we propose a wearable device using object detection techniques and a novel tactile display made from shape-memory alloy (SMA) actuators. After detecting obstacles in real-time, the tactile display attached to a user's hands presents different tactile sensations to show the position of the obstacles. To implement the computation-consuming object detection algorithm in a low-memory mobile device, we introduced a slimming com

A Low-Power Wearable Stand-Alone Tongue Drive System for People With Severe Disabilities.

This paper presents a low-power stand-alone tongue drive system (sTDS) used for individuals with severe disabilities to potentially control their environment such as computer, smartphone, and wheelchair using their voluntary tongue movements. A low-power local processor is proposed, which can perform signal processing to convert raw magnetic sensor signals to user-defined commands, on the sTDS wearable headset, rather than sending all raw data out to a PC or smartphone. The proposed sTDS significantly reduces the transmitter power consumption and subsequently increases the battery life. Assumi

Construction of sandwich-like porous structure of graphene-coated foam composites for ultrasensitive and flexible pressure sensors.

Ultrasensitive and flexible pressure sensors that can perceive and respond to environmental stimuli have attracted considerable attention due to their potential applications in wearable electronics and electronic skin devices. Here, we report a simple and low-cost strategy to fabricate high-performance pressure sensors via constructing a unique conductive/insulating/conductive sandwich-like porous structure (SPS). Interpenetration of the conductive graphene network throughout the porous insulating interlayer produces a highly efficient transition from the non-conductive to the conductive state

Silk fibroin-based hydrogels with low hysteresis, self-adhesion, and tunable ionic conductivity for wearable devices.

Silk Fibroin (SF) hydrogels are easy to functionalize and possess biocompatibility, making them highly promising for the development of flexible electronic devices and wearable equipment. However, fabricating SF-based hydrogels with multiple functions such as low hysteresis, self-adhesion, and high elasticity, while constructing flexible wearable electronic devices with high sensitivity and fidelity, remains a challenge to date. To address these issues, this work reports a one-step preparation of a fully polymer-based triple-network hydrogel through precursor solution pH pre-regulation, with p…

Advances in Wearable Thermoelectric Devices: Strategies for Enhancing Wearability and Performance.

Thermoelectric devices (TEDs) offer a compelling solution by enabling solid-state, electrically driven thermal regulation directly on the human body. At the same time, they can function as power sources for small electronic devices by utilizing the temperature difference between the body and the surrounding environment. However, the inherently rigid components used in TEDs limit their ability to conform seamlessly to the curved and dynamic surfaces of the human body. This mismatch often results in interfacial gaps and mechanical delamination during motion, significantly degrading thermal and e

High-Strength Degradable Transparent Bio-Electronics Enabled by Confined Crystallization in Aligned Nanofibers for AI-Assisted Motion Sensors.

The severe environmental impact of conventional plastic electronics necessitates next-generation wearable devices simultaneously embodying high performance, flexibility, and sustainability. Herein, we propose a 1D nano-confined high-pressure crystallization strategy to create highly-crystalline, yet highly-transparent bio-based fiber films to meet these requirements. The bacterial copolymer poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)-based electrospun fibrous film, with 1D-confined oriented crystallites in the aligned nanofibers, can be transformed from opaque to transparent by heating a

Recognizing human body motions opens possibilities for real-time observation of users' daily activities, revolutionizing continuous human healthcare and rehabilitation. While some wearable sensors show their capabilities in detecting movements, no prior work could detect full-body motions with wireless devices. Here, we introduce a soft electronic textile-integrated system, including nanomaterials and flexible sensors, which enables real-time detection of various full-body movements using the combination of a wireless sensor suit and deep-learning-based cloud computing. This system includes an

Silk Fibroin Protective Coating for Washable and Reusable Textile Electronics.

In this study, a new way of protecting textile wearable electronics is proposed. A natural product, silk fibroin, known for its high biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low cytotoxicity, was selected to cover the functionalized fabric to improve its stability and enable washability. Silk fabric was selected as a non-toxic material, suitable for further application on skin and for wearable devices. Silk fabric was functionalized with various amounts of high-pressure carbon monoxide single-walled carbon nanotubes (HiPCO SWNTs). HiPCO SWNTs made the fabric electroconductive, but they are easi

Inkjet-Printed Wearable E-nose with Liquid-Phase Ligand-Exchanged Quantum Dots for Human-Centered Gas/Odor Monitoring.

The development of next-generation wearable electronic nose (e-nose) systems for real-time environmental monitoring requires miniaturized gas sensor arrays with high sensitivity and low-power operation. Current limitations persist in the incompatibility between conventional sensing material deposition methods and MEMS microheater architectures. Here, we present an intelligent wristwatch-formatted e-nose system, integrating a printable quantum dot (QD) sensor array fabricated using an optimized colloidal quantum dot (CQD) ink formulation and a precision inkjet printing strategy. A multifunctional porous interface bridging 3D architected electronics with skin.

Skin-integrated flexible electronics are rapidly advancing from short-term use to continuous, long-term wear to meet the demands of health monitoring, wound healing, and skin disease treatment. While three-dimensionally (3D) architected devices offer sensing capabilities and outstanding mechanical performances, the development of a conformal interface between these 3D electronic devices and skin for long-term comfortable wear remains challenging due to their geometric complexity and mechanical fragility. Here, we introduce a multifunctional porous interface that bridges 3D flexible electronics

Microstructure-engineered flexible tactile sensors for bioelectronics and human-machine interactions: a review.

Flexible tactile sensors, distinguished by their mechanical compliance and skin-like characteristics, have emerged as highly promising platforms for applications in bioelectronics and human-machine interactions. However, their sensing performance remains substantially constrained by intrinsic material limitations, while the persistent trade-off between sensitivity and detection range continues to hinder their practical utility in complex application scenarios. This review systematically summarizes the principal sensing mechanisms of flexible tactile sensors, including capacitive, piezoresistiv

Bioinspired Interlocked Structure-Induced High Deformability for Two-Dimensional Titanium Carbide (MXene)/Natural Microcapsule-Based Flexible Pressure Sensors.

Achieving high deformability in response to minimal external stimulation while maximizing human-machine interactions is a considerable challenge for wearable and flexible electronics applications. Various natural materials or living organisms consisting of hierarchical or interlocked structures exhibit combinations of properties (e.g., natural elasticity and flexibility) that do not occur in conventional materials. The interlocked epidermal-dermal microbridges in human skin have excellent elastic moduli, which enhance and amplify received tactile signal transport. Herein, we use the sensing me
