INTRODUCTION: Symptoms of orthostatic intolerance, e.g., following prolonged bed rest and microgravity exposure, are associated with reductions in cerebral blood flow. We tested the hypothesis that spontaneously breathing through an impedance threshold device (ITD) would attenuate the fall in cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) during a hypotensive orthostatic challenge and reduce the severity of reported symptoms.
METHODS: While breathing through either an active ITD (-7 cm H2O inspiratory impedance) or a sham ITD (no impedance), 19 subjects performed a squat stand test (SST). Symptoms upon

Preflight training frequently has been proposed as a potential solution to the problem of space motion sickness. The paper considers successively the otolith reinterpretation, the concept for a preflight adaptation trainer and the research with the Miami University Seesaw, the Wright Patterson Air-Force Base Dynamic Environment Simulator and the Visually Coupled Airborne Systems Simulator prototype adaptation trainers.

As human space exploration advances to establish a permanent presence beyond the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) with NASA's Artemis mission, researchers are striving to understand and address the health challenges of living and working in the spaceflight environment. Exposure to ionizing radiation, microgravity, isolation and other spaceflight hazards pose significant risks to astronauts. Determining neurobiological and neurobehavioral responses, understanding physiological responses under Central Nervous System (CNS) control, and identifying putative mechanisms to inform countermeasure development are

An internal jugular venous thrombus in an astronaut was first identified in 2020 following a two-month microgravity exposure. This raised concerns about thromboembolic events (TE) during spaceflights. Studies have suggested that microgravity can induce changes in blood composition, venous flow and endothelial dysfunction, which might all contribute to a hypercoagulable state. However, whether these proposed mechanisms translate into a clinically significant increase in TE risk remains unclear since, even though humans have spent >200 person-years in space, no studies of blood coagulation in mi

Exposure to the spaceflight environment causes adaptations in most human physiological systems, many of which are thought to affect women differently from men. Since only 11.5% of astronauts worldwide have been female, these issues are largely understudied. The physiological nuances affecting the female body in the spaceflight environment remain inadequately defined since the last thorough published review on the subject. A PubMed literature search yielded over 2200 publications. Using NASA's 2014 review series 'The effects of sex and gender on adaptation to space' as a benchmark, we identifie

With National Aeronautics and Space Administration's plans for longer distance, longer duration spaceflights such as missions to Mars and the surge in popularity of space tourism, the need to better understand the effects of spaceflight on the musculoskeletal system has never been more present. However, there is a paucity of information on how spaceflight affects orthopaedic health. This review surveys existing literature and discusses the effect of spaceflight on each aspect of the musculoskeletal system. Spaceflight reduces bone mineral density at rapid rates because of multiple mechanisms.

After a decline in interest in space missions following the cessation of the Apollo missions, there has been a recent resurgence. Activities on the International Space Station have raised awareness of a positive resumption of space travel to more challenging destinations such as Mars and a possible adaptation of human life on the Moon. The biological and physiological studies conducted on these stations in low Earth orbit are crucial in familiarizing humanity with the potential problems that can arise during long journeys. Cosmic rays and microgravity are the 2 main negative phenomena in space

Spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) refers to a distinct constellation of ocular, neurological and neuroimaging findings observed in astronauts during and following long duration spaceflight. These ocular findings, to include optic disc oedema, posterior globe flattening, chorioretinal folds and hyperopic shifts, were first described by NASA in 2011. SANS is a potential risk to astronaut health and will likely require mitigation prior to planetary travel with prolonged exposures to microgravity. While the exact pathogenesis of SANS is not completely understood, several hypothes

In view of the critical role the gut microbiome plays in human health, it has become clear that astronauts' gut microbiota composition changes after spending time in space. Astronauts are exposed to several risks in space, including a protracted period of microgravity, radiation, and mechanical unloading of the body. Several deleterious effects of such an environment are reported, including orthostatic intolerance, cardiovascular endothelial dysfunction, cellular and molecular changes, and changes in the composition of the gut microbiome. Herein, the correlation between the gut microbiome and

Movements of the human biological system have adapted to the physical environment under the 1-g gravitational force on Earth. However, the effects of microgravity in space on the underlying functional neuromuscular control behaviors remain poorly understood. Here, we aimed to elucidate the effects of prolonged exposure to a microgravity environment on the functional coordination of multiple muscle activities. The activities of 16 lower limb muscles of 5 astronauts who stayed in space for at least 3 mo were recorded while they maintained multidirectional postural control during bipedal standing

As human spaceflight progresses with extended mission durations, the demand for effective and safe drugs will necessarily increase. To date, the accepted medications used during missions (for space motion sickness, sleep disturbances, allergies, pain, and sinus congestion) are administered under the assumption that they act as safely and efficaciously as on Earth. However, physiological changes have been documented in human subjects in spaceflight involving fluid shifts, muscle and bone loss, immune system dysregulation, and adjustments in the gastrointestinal tract and metabolism. These alter

Astronauts exhibit several pathophysiological changes due to a variety of stressors related to the space environment, including microgravity, space radiation, isolation, and confinement. Space motion sickness, bone and muscle mass loss, cardiovascular deconditioning and neuro-ocular syndrome are some of the spaceflight-induced effects on human health. Optimal nutrition is of the utmost importance, and-in combination with other measures, such as physical activity and pharmacological treatment-has a key role in mitigating many of the above conditions, including bone and muscle mass loss. During spaceflight, astronauts experience 1-1.5% bone loss per month, especially in the lumbar spine, pelvis and lower limbs. The bone loss leads to osteoporosis and increased the risk of fracture. Current researches focus on anti-osteoporosis under microgravity mainly by inhibiting bone resorption of osteoclasts and / or increasing bone formation of osteoblasts. However, studies on the effects of mass transfer in the bone lacunar-canalicular system (LCS) on osteoporosis are lacking. Osteocytes reside in the lacunae and communicate with other osteocytes, osteoblasts and osteoclasts through the

All life forms have evolved under the constant force of gravity on Earth and developed ways to counterbalance acceleration load. In space, shear forces, buoyance-driven convection, and hydrostatic pressure are nullified or strongly reduced. When subjected to microgravity in space, the equilibrium between cell architecture and the external force is disturbed, resulting in changes at the cellular and sub-cellular levels (e.g., cytoskeleton, signal transduction, membrane permeability, etc.). Cosmic radiation also poses great health risks to astronauts because it has high linear energy transfer va

Spaceflight-induced multi-organ dysfunction affects the health of astronauts and the safety of in-orbit flight. However, the effect of microgravity on the kidney and the underlying mechanisms are unknown. In the current study, we used a hindlimb unweighting (HU) animal model to simulate microgravity and employed histological analysis, ischemia-reperfusion experiments, renal ultrasonography, bioinformatics analysis, isometric force measurement, and other molecular experimental settings to evaluate the effects of microgravity on the kidneys and the underlying mechanisms involved in this transiti

We examined changes in the serum testosterone level and in sperm in the testis and epididymis by using tail-suspended mice, which are a simulation model of the body fluid shift in space, to evaluate the possibility of spermatogenesis failure in space environment. We also studied pathological disorders of the testis in the tail-suspended mice. Tail suspension was imposed with a tail harness to a degree at which the hindlegs of mice did not touch the floor of the housing unit. In control mice, the tail was similarly fixed with a tail harness to impose the same stress, except that a hindleg remai

The impact of weightlessness on the female reproductive system remains poorly understood, although deep space exploration is impossible without the development of effective measures to protect women's health. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of a 5-day "dry" immersion on the state of the reproductive system of female subjects. On the fourth day of the menstrual cycle after immersion, we observed an increase in inhibin B of 35% (p < 0.05) and a decrease in luteinizing hormone of 12% (p < 0.05) and progesterone of 52% (p < 0.05) compared with the same day before immersion. Vertigo is relatively common after diving. Although it may be the result of the changes in pressure, it can also be a feature of decompression accidents, of clinical toxicity, simply be a manifestation of altered physiology resulting from immersion in a weightless environment in which all the organs involved in maintaining equilibrium (vestibular system, proprioception and vision) are affected. It seemed to us to be of interest to study the incidence of vertigo in naval divers by means of an anonymous questionnaire. The responses were elicited over a 3 month period from 333 divers. 45 divers r
