Anthrax epizootic in white-tailed deer.

Bacillus anthracis caused high mortality among white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Beulah Island, Desha County, Arkansas. Sixty-seven carcasses were located and the total loss was estimated between 200 and 300 deer. Range conditions indicated that the deer herd had greatly exceeded carrying capacity. Lesions in deer were similar to those ascribed to anthrax in domestic cattle, sheep, and goats.

Towards noninvasive white blood cell count.

Despite rapid advances in diagnostic and imaging technologies, no clinical device for noninvasive monitoring of the immune system is currently available. The standard white blood cell count (WBCC), a key clinical measure for assessing patients' health, requires drawing blood, which poses inherent risks for secondary infection and anemia in vulnerable patient populations. In addition, the specialized equipment, expertise, and infrastructure are not always available in resource-poor settings. We present a method for noninvasive and label-free WBCC by imaging human oral mucosa using a miniaturize…

Unilateral white-out lung: thoracic thymolipoma.

We report the case of a teenaged girl presenting with progressive orthopnoea, exertional dyspnoea, non-radiating right-sided chest pain and loss of appetite, for the last 6 months. Chest radiograph revealed complete opacification of the right hemithorax with contralateral tracheo-mediastinal shift. A contrast-enhanced CT scan of the thorax showed a massive fat-containing anterior mediastinal mass extending into both hemithoraces, without invasion of adjacent structures. Ultrasound-guided biopsy of the lesion suggested a neoplastic aetiology of thymic origin. Based on the clinicoradiological an

White matter injury across neurodegenerative disease.

Oligodendrocytes (OLs), the myelin-generating cells of the central nervous system (CNS), are active players in shaping neuronal circuitry and function. It has become increasingly apparent that injury to cells within the OL lineage plays a central role in neurodegeneration. In this review, we focus primarily on three degenerative disorders in which white matter loss is well documented: Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We discuss clinical data implicating white matter injury as a key feature of these disorders, as well as shared and div…

White Cord Syndrome: A Treatment Dilemma.

Spinal cord reperfusion injury following decompressive surgery is extremely rare. This complication is known as white cord syndrome (WCS). A 61-year-old male presented with chronic neck stiffness associated with left C6/C7 radiculopathy and numbness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical spine reported a severely narrowed left C6/C7 neural exit canal. C6/C7 anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) was performed. There was no significant intraoperative injury. On postoperative day 6, the patient developed bilateral C8 numbness, which started post-operation. He was treated fo…

White matter microstructure and verbal fluency.

Poor performance on verbal fluency tasks is associated with an increased risk of post-stroke cognitive impairment. Grey matter regions supporting verbal fluency have been identified via lesion-symptom mapping, but the links between verbal fluency and white matter structure remain less well described. We examined white matter correlates of semantic (Category Fluency Animals) and phonemic or lexical fluency (COWAT FAS) after stroke, accounting for stroke severity measured with the National Institutes of health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), age, sex, and level of education. White matter fibre density and…

Epigenetic Regulators of White Adipocyte Browning.

Adipocytes play an essential role in maintaining energy homeostasis in mammals. The primary function of white adipose tissue (WAT) is to store energy; for brown adipose tissue (BAT), primary function is to release fats in the form of heat. Dysfunctional or excess WAT can induce metabolic disorders such as dyslipidemia, obesity, and diabetes. Preadipocytes or adipocytes from WAT possess sufficient plasticity as they can transdifferentiate into brown-like beige adipocytes. Studies in both humans and rodents showed that brown and beige adipocytes could improve metabolic health and protect from me…

Characterizing White Matter in Huntington's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Investigating early white matter (WM) change in Huntington's disease (HD) can improve our understanding of the way in which disease spreads from the striatum. OBJECTIVES: We provide a detailed characterization of pathology-related WM change in HD. We first examined WM microstructure using diffusion-weighted imaging and then investigated both underlying biological properties of WM and products of WM damage including iron, myelin plus neurofilament light, a biofluid marker of axonal degeneration-in parallel with the mutant huntingtin protein. METHODS: We examined WM change in HD ge…

White matter microstructure in anorexia nervosa.

The neurobiological underpinnings of anorexia nervosa (AN) are unclear. White matter deficits have been described in the illness, but findings are inconsistent between studies. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in white matter microstructure in AN using diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). It was hypothesised that people with AN, relative to a healthy control (HC) group, would show decreased functional anisotropy (FA) and increased mean diffusivity (MD) in the fornix and superior longitudinal fasciculus, consistent with previous literature. Analyses were conducted on 23 females…
