Two patients, a woman aged 24 and a man aged 86, had suffered from recurrent, itchy, linear, creeping skin lesions, notably on the thighs, buttocks and lower abdomen, for 9 months and more than 50 years, respectively. The woman had been in South America, and the man had worked on the Burma railway as a prisoner of war during World War II. In both patients 'larva currens' was observed. The clinical diagnosis of 'strongyloidiasis' was supported by eosinophilia and raised antibody titres against Strongyloides stercoralis in the blood. No larvae could be detected in either patient. Treatment with …

Biological warfare and fear of biological warfare have affected our wars, our peace, and our research throughout this century. During World War I, animals were deliberately infected with glanders. During World War II, biowarfare research was carried out by Japan, Germany, England, and the United States. Japan carried out biological warfare attacks in China. England used biological warfare for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich. In the 1950s and 1960s, Army researchers released bacteria over U.S. cities in biological warfare tests. The most frequent biological warfare terrorist episodes hav…

PURPOSE: We aim to recapitulate the rapid development of head and neck radiotherapy in the context of otorhinolaryngology (ORL) medicine starting 125 years ago. This is put into context with the unsuccessful treatment of the laryngeal cancer (LC) of the German emperor Frederick III and its historical consequences.
METHODS: The three-step process consisted in the analysis of (1) historical sources of the development of ORL radiotherapy from the discovery of x‑rays and radioactivity until World War I, (2) course and treatment of Frederick's III LC, (3) political context with a special focus on

The infrarenal aorta was examined by ultrasound in 329 men who had lost a leg in World War II and in 702 war veterans. The groups were similar in terms of age and risk factors for arteriosclerosis. Abdominal aortic aneurysms were found in 5.8% of the amputees compared with 1.1% of the non-amputees. Unilateral flow reduction after leg amputation causes an asymmetrical flow pattern at the aortic bifurcation, and this is probably the main cause of late damage to the aorta.

Based on the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, there are 636,120 ways for an individual to qualify for a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Galatzer-Levy & Bryant, 2013). To unravel this heterogeneity, we examine the historical trajectory of trauma-related diagnoses. Our review addresses four traumas (i.e., combat, natural disaster, life-threatening accident and sexual assault) that have contributed the most to conceptual models of PTSD. Although these trauma types are all subsumed under the same diagnostic label, our literature review in

The lives and scientific achievements of two outstanding Polish biologists - Professors Rudolf Weigl (1883-1957) and Ludwik Hirszfeld (1884-1954) - are presented in the context of the social and political events before and after World War II. The main aim is to recall and emphasise the very modern studies conducted in the two decades between the wars in the Polish scientific centres of Lvov and Warsaw, and the resulting concepts which provided the basis for both the modern microbiological-parasitological experiments and the organisation of post-war teaching and research institutions in Poland.…

As medical technology advances, laboratory-based medical technologists have gained visibility as essential members of patient-centered healthcare teams. In Japan, this has been especially evident since the end of World War II. Legal and professional frameworks have evolved to train and credential clinical laboratory technologists, not only for ever more complicated laboratory investigations, but also, for active engagement with other healthcare professionals and even with patients themselves. Herein, we introduce some history, followed by current demographics, describe training and certificati…

"Forward psychiatry" was devised in World War I for the treatment of shell shock and today is the standard intervention for combat stress reaction. It relied on three principles: proximity to battle, immediacy, and expectation of recovery, subsequently given the acronym "PIE." Both US and UK forces belatedly reintroduced PIE methods during World War II to return servicemen to active duty and made confident claims for its efficacy. Advanced treatment units also appeared to have minimized psychiatric battle casualties during Korean and Vietnamese Wars. Evaluations of its use by Israeli forces in…

Kurt Huldschinsky (1883-1940) was a German pediatrician who was one of the international leaders in the field of rickets research between the two world wars. After his medical studies, he served at the Kaiserin-Auguste-Victoria-Haus in Berlin and at the University Children's Hospital in Vienna, among other places. After World War I, he worked with the famous orthopedist Konrad Biesalski at the Oskar-Helene-Heim for the healing and education of frail children in Berlin. Here he was the first to prove that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from mercury vapor lamps ("artificial sunlight") co

BACKGROUND: A number of research results on closed venereology facilities in the Soviet Occupation Zone (SOZ) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) have been presented in recent years. However, little is known about similar facilities in the Western Occupation Zones (WOZ) and in the early Federal Republic of Germany (FRG).
METHOD: We have researched the records of the State Archive in Hamburg. Subsequently, the analysed sources were evaluated using the historically critical method.
RESULTS: Three closed venereology wards existed in Hamburg. Compulsory commitments were conducted according

Heidelberg psychiatrist Hans Walther Gruhle (1880 - 1958) faced a harsh interruption of his academic career, when National Socialist authorities put into doubt his reliability in respect to their political goals in 1934. Holding a senior position at Heidelberg's psychiatric university clinic, Gruhle had been transmitted to the state-run mental asylums of Zwiefalten and Weissenau, both geographically located in Southern Wuerttemberg. In function and spatial perspective, Gruhle thus came close to forced sterilization and so-called central euthanasia, initiated by the National Socialist health ad

For almost 45 years, the experience of Jewish children who were hidden during World War II was considered to be of little importance, particularly with respect to what had taken place in the concentration camps. Their very history was ignored in the many accounts of the Holocaust. It was only at the end of the 1980s that their experience began to be thought of as potentially traumatic. In this paper, the authors report on their psychoanalytical research project concerning the psychological outcomes of those experiences that had remained concealed for such an extraordinarily long latency period…

In 1962 the Frankfurt Attorney General Dr. Fritz Bauer, who became known worldwide through the Auschwitz Trials, charged the ex-director of the psychiatric and neurological clinic of the University of Würzburg, Prof. Dr. Werner Heyde, in his bill of indictment with murder in at least 100,000 cases. The trial planned for February 1964 was awaited with great interest by the media. However, it never took place, because Heyde, who went under the pseudonym Dr. Fritz Sawade in the postwar period, committed suicide shortly beforehand. In the years 1940/1941 Heyde was head assessor and medical directo
