In a retrospective study, patients with suspected scaphoid fracture had an average of three sets of scaphoid radiographs prior to scintigraphy. Scans were performed an average of 3 months after injury and many were inconclusive because of disuse changes. A prospective analysis of early scintigraphy in 35 cases over 18 months was carried out. Scans were performed at an average of 15.5 days after injury in selected cases. Patients had an average of 1.28 sets of negative radiographs prior to scanning. There were no false negative scans and in 13 with focal uptake a wrist fracture was demonstrated

Between January 1980 and December 1989, a prospective study was carried out on 114 upper limbs in 90 patients, which were electrically burned with the wrist as the current entrance site. Based upon extensive clinical investigations of arterial injury and its adverse effect on hand circulation, a grading system is suggested for electrically injured wrists based on the severity of injury. The total amputation rate was 39.4 per cent in this group, which was composed of miscellaneous cases with various injuries. However, in subgroups of Type I to Type IV, the amputation rates were 0, 0, 80 and 100

The article deals with the results of the analysis of morphological changes in the perineural tissue of 54 hands (in 47 patients) which were treated by operation for compression of the ulnar nerve on the hand. The main variants of localization of compression of the ulnar nerve in Guyon's canal were revealed. The main trunk of the ulnar nerve is compressed at the level of the volar carpal ligament in most cases. Two or three levels of affection of the main trunk of the nerve or its branches are encountered in half of the cases. The causes of compression of the ulnar nerve on the hand are thicke

PURPOSE: Wrist radial deviation is a possible complication of tendon transfer for restoration of wrist extension in cases of radial nerve paralysis. In posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) injury, this is because of the imbalance caused by the intact extensor carpi radialis longus and paralysis of the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU). This deformity may also occur following transfer of the pronator teres (PT) to the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) for radial nerve palsy. To address wrist radial deviation, we propose transferring the anconeus muscle, extended by the intermuscular septum between

BACKGROUND: Self-cutting is a special type of emergency in hand surgery. Despite its low mortality rate, it is clinically significant because there is a possibility of permanent disability and repeated suicide attempts are likely to occur. Therefore, we aim to understand the characteristics of self-inflicted wrist injuries and share the perspectives from a hand surgeon in order to inform those who face these patients primarily in the emergency room.
METHODS: We reviewed 17 patients with self-inflicted wrist injuries who were referred to the Department of Hand surgery from the Emergency Medici…

Experience of a late plasty, using a thin cutaneo-adiposal flaps of abdominal wall of a full-layered wounds of soft tissues of the thumbs and a wrist in 6 injured persons, was presented. Critical postoperative complications and the flaps loss were not observed. Parts of the edge necrosis of the flaps in 3 patients were excised, the wound suturing was done or autodermoplasty, in 1 of them osteosequesterectomy was performed. The reconstruction purpose--restoration of the cover tissues and revascularization of the thumbs and wrists defects--was achieved in all the patients.

BACKGROUND: Overuse wrist injuries can cause long-term symptoms in young athletes performing wrist-loading sports. Information on the prevalence, incidence and associated risk factors is required.
PURPOSE: We aimed to review the prevalence and incidence of overuse wrist injuries in young athletes and to identify associated risk factors. We focused on popular wrist-loading youth sports-gymnastics, tennis, field hockey, volleyball, judo and rowing.
STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review.
METHODS: We conducted a literature search on athletes aged <18 years performing wrist-loading focus sports. Preva…

BACKGROUND: Despite the frequency of hand and wrist injuries in children, patient-reported outcomes have not been systematically assessed. This study hypothesizes that the Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) can be reliable, responsive, and discriminatory in assessing the impact of acute pediatric hand and wrist injuries on function and quality of life.
METHODS: Consecutive patients presenting to a pediatric clinic with acute hand and wrist injuries over a 3-month period completed PODCI questionnaires at initial and follow-up visits. Reliability was assessed with Cronbach α …

Our aim was to determine the incidence and nature of injuries in children from rollerblading attending a district general hospital Accident … nt. Rollerblading is an increasingly popular, but expensive, activity amongst children in Scotland. Wrist injuries from falling were the most common presentation which may result in prolonged school absenteeism. Emphasis is normally placed on protective headgear, however, with wrist injuries more common, consideration must be given to the active promotion of inj …

INTRODUCTION: Among various patterns of complex injuries of the wrist and forearm, "spaghetti wrist" refers to an extensive volar forearm la … rading in all six tests used for the functional assessment post-operatively.
DISCUSSION: Spaghetti wrist injuries usually occur in a transverse wound pattern and necessitate timely and definitive operative reconstruction of all injured structures in layers, through an axial approach, by experienced hand surgeons to maximize outcome and to avoid complications. T …

Noninfective subcutaneous emphysema of the upper extremity, albeit rare, has to be borne in mind when treating patients with subcutaneous emphysema. The misdiagnosis of this condition as its serious infective counterpart often leads to unnecessary aggressive treatment. Noninfective subcutaneous emphysema often accompanies a patient who has no systemic symptoms of illness. Unfortunately, the distinction is not always easy especially when history of injury suggests involvement of an infective or reactive element. Penetrating blackthorn injury is common, especially in rural communities, and often

BACKGROUND: Three siblings with goitre and latent to mild hypothyroidism were suspected of having thyroid peroxidase (TPO) abnormality. Direct sequencing of their genomic DNAs showed two novel mutations of the TPO gene, one of which was G1687T (Gly533Cys; exon 9) and the other 1808-13del (Asp574/Leu575del; exon 10). The two mutations were compound heterozygous, as the former was found in their father's DNA as heterozygous, and the latter was found in DNA from their mother, also as heterozygous. As Gly533 and Asp574/Leu575 were well-conserved amino acids in the peroxidase superfamily, Gly533Cys

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the modified Kessler technique in managing spaghetti wrist lacerations b … 2).
CONCLUSIONS: The modified Kessler technique is reliable with functional outcomes for spaghetti wrist injuries involving tendons, nerves, and arteries. Meticulous and early surgical treatment within the first 8 hours of spaghetti wrist injury and early initiation and long-term physical therapy are vital in patients' functional outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Wrist joint injury refers to the injury of the wrist joint caused by excessive stretching of the ligaments and joint capsules around the joint caused by indirect violence. The tissue structure of the wrist joint is complex, and the clinical diagnosis effect is poor.
METHODS: The purpose of this study was to improve the diagnostic accuracy of wrist joint injuries and provide evidence for imaging analysis and automatic diagnosis of lesions in patients with wrist joint injuries. The Canny algorithm was adopted to extract the edge features of the patient's magnetic resonance imaging (

The modified Steindler procedure-a reconstructive surgery used to restore elbow flexion following upper brachial plexus injuries-involves shifting the origins of the muscle groups responsible for wrist flexion and forearm pronation originating from the medial epicondyle to the proximal direction to be used as flexors of the elbow. In the postoperative rehabilitation, we focused on strengthening not only the transferred muscle but also the wrist extensor muscles as antagonist muscles. After reconstruction surgery for elbow flexion via the modified Steindler procedure for traumatic brachial plex
