For surgical treatment of patients with tracheoesophageal fistulas the localization of the aortic arch is great practical importance. Aortography and CT scanning have been advocated as the radiographic techniques of choice. The location of the aortic arch can be diagnosed on a chest x-ray by the deviation of the trachea alone. A barium swallow is not required. The optimal radiographic technique for this purpose was investigated in phantom studies and tested in animals and newborns. A simplified mass screening method for methylmercury exposure was developed using methylmercury-volatilizing bacteria from Minamata Bay. Some bacteria can transform methylmercury into mercury vapor. CdTe film was deposited using the electrophoretic deposition technique onto an ITO glass at various bath temperatures. Four batch film compositions were used by mixing 1 to 4 wt% concentration of CdTe powder with 10 mL of a solution of methanol and toluene. Sixty-five patients with malignant melanoma metastatic to the thorax were evaluated retrospectively. Chest x-ray films showed abnormalities in 63 patients and provided the first evidence of dissemination in 42 of the 62 with widespread metastasis. PURPOSE: The objective of this work was to evaluate phantom dosimetry of a novel kilovoltage (kV) X-ray source, which employs a stationary tungsten anode and a linearly swept scanning electron beam. The source utilizes converging X-ray collimation along with orthogonal mechanical rotation to distribute surface flux over large area. In this study, this was investigated as a potential solution to fast-falloff limitations expected with kV radiotherapy. Backscatter from four commonly used metals (aluminum, lead, copper, and iron) was measured under diagnostic imaging conditions, using screen-film systems as detectors. The results indicate that for an 80-kV filtered beam and Par Speed/XRP system, backscatter increases as aluminum (Al) thickness increases until it reaches a plateau of approximately 12% at 50 mm Al. The amount of backscatter from any of these four metals increases as the tube voltage is raised from 60 to 115 kV.
