PURPOSE: To investigate the feasibility of using intermediate energy 2 MV x-rays for extracranial robotic intensity modulated radiation therapy.
METHODS: Two megavolts flattening filter free x-rays were simulated using the Monte Carlo code MCNP (v4c). The effect of in vitro irradiation with increasing in logarythmic progress X-ray doses on lymphocyte viability and on T and B lymphocyte populations was studied in normal adults, patients with myasthenia gravis and in patients undergoing long-term steroid therapy. A case control study of neonates was performed to determine those factors contributing to the development of chronic lung disease (CLD). During the 5 years 1981-84 there were 487 neonatal survivors at gestations of 25-32 weeks; 391 of these developed respiratory failure (oxygen therapy required for more than 6 h). To study the clinical and diagnostic significance of enteroclysis through nasointestinal decompression intubation, thirty-five patients with small bowel obstruction were enrolled. We report that tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) mRNA is increased after treatment with x-rays in certain human sarcoma cells. An increase in TNF-alpha mRNA is accompanied by the increased production of TNF-alpha protein. TNF-alpha enhances radiation lethality in both TNF-alpha-producing and -nonproducing tumor cells. These data suggest that, in addition to the direct cytotoxic effects of x-rays, production of TNF-alpha may add to radiation lethality through autocrine and paracrine mechanisms. Combinations of TNF-alpha and therapeutic radiation may be useful in clinical cancer therapy.

38 patients, and 45 hips has undergone treatment for slipped capital femoral epiphysis between 1995 and 2000. Nowadays, the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is most certainly the major cause of the increased incidence of tuberculosis (TBC). A retrospective review of 2,851 bone scans done at a cancer center over a period of 4 yr revealed 41 patients having a single abnormality in a rib as their first abnormal scintigraphic finding. Thymoma with thrombocytopenia has rarely been reported. We recently encountered a case of operated invasive thymoma with thrombocytopenia. A 74-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of 'shortness of breath' and general fatigue. Chest X-ray, CT and MRI showed a mass 5 x 5 cm in size at the anterior mediastinum. In hematological test, a significant decrease in platelets count (1.6 x 10(4)/mm3) and a increase in PA-IgG (134.5 ng/10 cells) were found.
