Neurotrophic effects of ACTH/MSH neuropeptides.

Numerous experiments with peptides related to ACTH/MSH, and involving tests such as avoidance, approach, discrimination and rewarded behavior indicate that these peptides possess neuroactive effects on learning, motivation, attention, and concentration. In addition, ACTH/MSH neuropeptides affect social behavior, interact with opiate binding sites, and possess antiepileptic properties. Other CNS effects which can be demonstrated after intracranial administration only are grooming behavior, stretching, yawning and sexual behavior. The effects reside mainly in the N-terminal part of ACTH (ACTH-(4…

Evaluation of mandibular functional limitation in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders and the relationship with other psychosocial factors.

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are a common source of orofacial pain and dysfunction, often characterized by myalgia … TMJ disorders for chewing tough food, chewing chicken, opening wide enough to drink from a cup, and yawning (p < .05). Disc displacement without reduction, with a limited opening subgroup, exhibited the highest JFLS-8 scores for chewing and mouth-opening-related activities. JFLS-8 is correlated with the PHQ-9, GAD-7, GCPS (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Signific …

Incident injury is strongly associated with subsequent incident temporomandibular disorder: results from the OPPERA study.

Cross-sectional studies confirm, as expected, a positive association between jaw injury and painful temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), but … ow-up questionnaires assessed incident jaw injury, which was classified as intrinsic (attributed to yawning or prolonged mouth opening) or extrinsic (attributed to other causes). Examiners classified incident TMD during a median follow-up period of 2.8 years (range 0.2-5.2 years). Cox regression models used jaw injury as a time-dependent covariate to esti …

Differential effects of the dopamine D3 receptor antagonist PG01037 on cocaine and methamphetamine self-administration in rhesus monkeys.

The dopamine D3 receptor (D3R) has been shown to mediate many of the behavioral effects of psychostimulants associated with high abuse poten … efficacy of PG01037 was correlated with the sensitivity of the D3/D2R agonist quinpirole to elicit yawning. These data suggest (1) that efficacy of D3R compounds in decreasing drug choice is greater in subjects with lower D3R, perhaps suggesting that it is percent occupancy that is the critical variable in determining efficacy and (2) differences in D3R …

Differential effects of 7-OH-DPAT on amphetamine-induced stereotypy and conditioned place preference.

Low doses of the dopamine D3-preferring agonist 7-hydroxy-N,N-di-n-propyl-2-aminotetralin (7-OH-DPAT) produce a behavioral profile that is opposite to that produced by the psychomotor stimulants cocaine and amphetamine. For example, low doses of 7-OH-DPAT produce conditioned place aversion and hypolocomotion, whereas psychomotor stimulants produce conditioned place preference (CPP) and hyperlocomotion. In experiment 1, the effects of low doses of 7-OH-DPAT (0.01-0.1 mg/kg) on d-amphetamine-induced (1 mg/kg) motor behaviors and CPP were assessed. In experiment 2, the effects of 0.1 mg/kg 7-OH-D

Differences in dogs' and wolves' human-directed greeting behaviour: facial expressions, body language, and the problem of human biases.

Dogs and wolves communicate effectively with humans, yet differences in their human-directed facial expressions and the role of relationship strength in shaping these behaviours remain poorly understood. This study explored the facial expressions of human-socialized wolves and dogs when greeting a bonded or familiar human through a fence. We hypothesised that differences would arise due to the domestication process, shaped further by the strength of their relationship. Additionally considering the bidirectionality integral to greeting interactions, we explored whether humans show different fac

The Middle Ear Cleft Status in a "Natural" Cohort With Eustachian Tube Dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: The Eustachian tube (ET) has a major role in the middle ear (ME) pressure homeostasis. ET dysfunction is the accepted paradigm for pressure-related ME disorders. We studied the ME status in patients with severely diminished ET opening abilities, and anticipated to find ME disorders in most of them. PATIENTS AND METHODS: ME status was evaluated in unconscious adults, who were hospitalized in a rehabilitation center with severe brain damage, requiring tracheotomy and gastrostomy. These patients were unable to swallow, produce valsalva, yawn, and needed oral suctioning. Examination i

Progressive anterior operculum syndrome due to FTLD-TDP: a clinico-pathological investigation.

Pathological investigation of progressive anterior operculum syndrome has rarely been reported. We describe clinico-pathological findings in a patient with progressive anterior operculum syndrome. A 74-year-old right-handed man had noticed speech and swallowing difficulties 1 year previously. Neurological examinations showed no abnormality other than a slight limitation of upward gaze and slow tongue movement without fibrillation. We investigated the patient using neuroimaging and neuropsychological examinations and observed him for 2 years until his death, at which point we obtained pathologi

[Vasovagal syncope].

The nature of most syncopal episodes, previously unknown, was recently elucidated by new diagnostic techniques such as the use of the tilt test. The vasovagal syncope can be clinically diagnosed by means of the tilt test. The transitory loss of consciousness during prolonged orthostasis is typically associated with sudden hypotension and bradycardia, which are commonly preceded by relative tachycardia and by premonitory symptoms such as pallor, nausea, asthenia, yawns, hyperventilation, mydriasis, humming, lasting several minutes. The nature of the vasovagal reflex is now better understood: in

Self-reported oral behaviour habits in hyperdivergent and normodivergent facial types.

The relationship between facial morphology and jaw function remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in self-reported oral behaviour habits between individuals with normodivergent and hyperdivergent facial types. Some 80 cases and controls were individually matched on age, sex ethnicity and treatment stage. The participants were recruited from an orthodontic clinic, and included both adolescents and adults. Habitual oral activity was assessed using the Oral Behaviour Checklist (OBC) based on their experiences in the past 4 weeks. Univariate and bivariate

Effects of chronic cocaine and ethanol self-administration on brain dopamine receptors in a rhesus monkey model of polysubstance abuse.

Most individuals with cocaine use disorder also use alcohol; however, little is known about the behavioural and pharmacological mechanisms that promote co-abuse. For example, although studies in humans and animals have documented that chronic use of either alcohol or cocaine alone decreases D2-like receptor (D2R) availability, effects of co-abuse of these substances on dopamine receptor function have not been characterized. These studies examined the effects of long-term cocaine self-administration in 12 male rhesus monkeys who also consumed either ethanol or an ethanol-free solution each day
