Effect of soil conditioner on alleviating saline-alkali stress damage of maize.

Soil conditioners are efficacy in ameliorating saline-alkali soils and fostering crop growth. To explore the effect and physiological mechanism of soil conditioner on improving the adaptability of maize to saline-alkali stress, we conducted a field randomized block experiment in Liuzhong Village, Pingluo County, Ningxia Province in 2022. We investigated the variations of antioxidant capacity, key enzyme activities and photosynthetic fluorescence properties of maize induced by soil conditioners under saline-alkali stress, with "Xianyu 1255" maize as the experimental material under four treatmen

Parallel tuning of semi-dwarfism via differential splicing of Brachytic1 in commercial maize and smallholder sorghum.

In the current genomic era, the search and deployment of new semi-dwarf alleles have continued to develop better plant types in all cereals. We characterized an agronomically optimal semi-dwarf mutation in Zea mays L. and a parallel polymorphism in Sorghum bicolor L. We cloned the maize brachytic1 (br1-Mu) allele by a modified PCR-based Sequence Amplified Insertion Flanking Fragment (SAIFF) approach. Histology and RNA-Seq elucidated the mechanism of semi-dwarfism. GWAS linked a sorghum plant height QTL with the Br1 homolog by resequencing a West African sorghum landraces panel. The semi-dwarf …

Does silicon attenuate PEG 6000-induced water deficit in germination and growth initial the seedlings corn.

Water stress limits the initial growth and development of maize mass and grain, as well as the physiological process for absorbing the amount of mineral elements. The objective was to evaluate the effect of silicon on germination and growth of corn seedlings submitted to water deficit. The experiment was carried out in the laboratory and the experimental design was completely randomized (factorial 3 × 4), with three concentrations of calcium silicate (0.0; 1.0 and 2.0 mM) and 4 solutions of PEG-6000 to simulate different osmotic potentials (0, 0; -0.3; -0.6; -0.9 MPa). Germination percentage,

Impact of tamarind seed gum on the viscosity behavior, thermal properties, and extrusion characteristics of native corn starch.

Tamarind seed gum (TSG) is a cold-swelling hydrocolloid with remarkable processing stability and starch synergy. Its use in direct expanded extruded foods has not been documented. The thermal and pasting viscosity properties of six TSG (0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, and 7.5% TSG) and native corn starch blends were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and ViscoQuick, respectively. These same blends were extruded using a corotating twin-screw extruder at four screw speeds (SSs) (150, 300, 450, and 600 rpm). System back pressure, motor torque, and specific mechanical energy (SME) were

Trapping Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Moths in Different Crop Habitats in Togo and Ghana.

The economic impact of the invasion of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) into Africa has so far been limited to maize agriculture but could potentially impact many other crops. Trapping based on pheromone lures provides a cost-effective method for detecting this important pest (commonly known as fall armyworm) and will be essential for large-scale monitoring of populations to determine its geographical distribution and migration behavior as the species equilibrates to its new environment. However, the effective use of pheromone trapping requires optimization for a give

Colonization and Movement of Green Fluorescent Protein-Labeled Clavibacter nebraskensis in Maize.

Clavibacter nebraskensis causes Goss's bacterial wilt and leaf blight, a major disease of maize. Infected crop residue is the primary inoculum source and infection can occur via wounds or natural openings, such as stomata or hydathodes. The use of resistant hybrids is the primary control method for Goss's wilt. In this study, colonization and movement patterns of C. nebraskensis during infection were examined using green fluorescent protein (GFP)-labeled bacterial strains. We successfully introduced a plasmid to C. nebraskensis via electroporation, which resulted in GFP accumulation. Fluoresce

Maize Infestation of Fall Armyworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Within Agro-Ecological Zones of Togo and Ghana in West Africa 3 Yr After Its Invasion.

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) invaded several West African countries in 2016 causing severe injury to maize plants and economic damage. This study assesses variations in the occurrence of this species in different Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZs) in Togo and Ghana during the 3 yr following its discovery. The surveys were conducted on 120 farms in Togo and 94 farms in Ghana by collecting larvae from 200 maize plants per hectare. Infestation levels were 68.46% in 2016, 55.82% in 2017, and 17.76% in 2018. The number of larvae recorded per hectare and infestation levels were hi

Interplay between hydrogen sulfide and methylglyoxal initiates thermotolerance in maize seedlings by modulating reactive oxidative species and osmolyte metabolism.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methylglyoxal (MG) were supposed to be novel signaling molecules in plants. However, whether interplay between H2S and MG can initiate thermotolerance in maize seedlings and in relation to metabolism of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and osmolytes is little known. In this study, watering with MG and NaHS (H2S donor) alone or in combination elevated survival and tissue vigor of maize seedlings under heat stress and coped with an increase in the biomembrane injury (as indicated in membrane lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage). The above-mentioned effects were sep

Fungal resistance mediated by maize wall-associated kinase ZmWAK-RLK1 correlates with reduced benzoxazinoid content.

Wall-associated kinases (WAKs) have recently been identified as major components of fungal and bacterial disease resistance in several cereal crop species. However, the molecular mechanisms of WAK-mediated resistance remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the function of the maize gene ZmWAK-RLK1 (Htn1) that confers quantitative resistance to northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) caused by the hemibiotrophic fungal pathogen Exserohilum turcicum. ZmWAK-RLK1 was found to localize to the plasma membrane and its presence resulted in a modification of the infection process by reducing pathogen pe

Effects of CaCO3 treatment on the morphology, crystallinity, rheology and hydrolysis of gelatinized maize starch dispersions.

Using calcium salts instead of lime allows for an ecological nixtamalization of maize grains, where the negative contamination impact of the traditional lime nixtamalization is reduced. This work assessed the effects of calcium carbonate (0.0-2.0%w/w CaCO3) on the morphology, crystallinity, rheology and hydrolysis of gelatinized maize starch dispersions (GMSD). Microscopy analysis showed that CaCO3 changed the morphology of insoluble remnants (ghosts) and decreased the degree of syneresis. Analysis of particle size distribution showed a slight shift to smaller sizes as the CaCO3 was increased.

Reactivation of an inactive centromere reveals epigenetic and structural components for centromere specification in maize.

Stable maize (Zea mays) chromosomes were recovered from an unstable dicentric containing large and small versions of the B chromosome centromere. In the stable chromosome, the smaller centromere had become inactivated. This inactive centromere can be inherited from one generation to the next attached to the active version and loses all known cytological and molecular properties of active centromeres. When separated from the active centromere by intrachromosomal recombination, the inactive centromere can be reactivated. The reactivated centromere regains the molecular attributes of activity in …

Evolutionary divergence and regulatory landscapes of benzoxazinoid metabolism in monocot crops.

Throughout their evolutionary trajectory, plants have orchestrated a sophisticated repertoire of defense mechanisms to counteract pathogenic threats. Central to this chemical arsenal in monocotyledonous lineages is the benzoxazinoid (BX) metabolic pathway, a quintessential secondary metabolic route that dictates plant resilience. While the biosynthetic blueprint of BXs has been extensively mapped in models such as maize (Zea mays) and wheat (Triticum aestivum), the regulatory logic and evolutionary divergence within rice (Oryza sativa) remain largely enigmatic. This review provides a high-reso…

Retrospective study of preventive effect of maize on mortality from Parkinson's disease in Japan.

The findings of a negative association between past maize (Zea mays) production and current Parkinson's disease mortality by each prefecture in Japan tends to support the hypothesis that the nutritional condition that causes niacin deficiency might protect people from Parkinson's disease. Specifically, the negative association between both the area planted for dried corn in 1960, 1970 or 1977 and the area planted for sweet corn in 1960 and age-adjusted death rates for Parkinson's disease is ecological evidence supporting the hypothesis. Extending the analysis to other cultivated crops, even st…

Single cell transcriptome reveals the molecular pathways of MADS-box genes in maize ovule development.

Flowers are the reproductive structures of flowering plants, involved in seed production. A mature flower has four whorls of specialized organs that differentiate from heterogeneous cell clusters in the floral meristem. However, the mechanisms controlling the specialization of floral meristem cells remain elusive. Our early research identified a double mutant of two MADS-box genes (mads8;14) that lacks flower organs and repeatedly produces branch-like structures in the female inflorescence of maize (Zea mays L.). Here, single-cell transcriptomic analysis revealed that ZmMADS8/14 regulate ovule…
