The pervasive role of zinc in the metabolic function of the body results from its function as a cofactor of a multitude of enzymes. Zinc is found in every tissue in the body, and because zinc metalloenzymes are found in every known class of enzymes, the metal has a function in every conceivable type of biochemical pathway. Symptoms resulting from zinc deficiency are as diverse as the enzymes with which the metal is associated. If chronic, severe, and untreated, zinc deficiency can be fatal. Less drastic symptoms include infections, hypogonadism, weight loss, emotional disturbance, dermatitis, …

In 14 hypertensives the effect of captopril (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor) treatment on red blood cell Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Zn2+ concentrations and on plasma Zn2+ concentrations were studied. Intraerythrocytic Zn2+ concentrations increased slightly, whereas plasma zinc concentrations decreased. The concurrence of hypozincemia with side effects resembling the symptoms of zinc deficiency such as loss of smell and taste suggests a role of alterations in zinc metabolism for the pharmacodynamics of captopril.

Zinc is an essential trace element necessary for over 200 zinc metalloenzymes and required for normal nucleic acid, protein, and membrane metabolism. During the past two decades there has been a rapid expansion of knowledge concerning zinc metabolism in both normal and disease situations, including mechanisms for zinc absorption, excretion and internal redistribution of zinc after stress or trauma. Acrodermatitis enteropathica has been recognized to be a disease of impaired zinc absorption in man. A host of disease processes now are recognized to be complicated by zinc deficiency including alc…

A patient with acrodermatitis as a result of zinc deficiency is reported. In spite of the characteristic signs the required substitution of zinc is often delayed, because the entity is confused with other, more common forms of dermatitis.

During the past two decades, the essentiality of zinc for man has been established. Deficiency of zinc in man due to nutritional factors and several diseased states has been recognized. High phytate content of cereal proteins decreases availability of zinc; thus the prevalence of zinc deficiency is likely to be high in a population subsisting mainly on cereal proteins. Alcoholism is known to cause hyperzincuria and thus may play a role in producing zinc deficiency in man. Malabsorption, cirrhosis of the liver, chronic renal disease and other chronically debilitating diseases may similarly indu…

A 42-year-old woman had an acquired zinc deficiency. The patient was malnourished, secondary to chronic alcohol (ethanol) abuse and cirrhosis, with associated low serum and urinary levels of zinc. Her acrodermatitis was unresponsive to topically applied triamcinolone acetonide but cleared after oral zinc sulfate therapy.

The symptoms of the zinc depletion syndrome are demonstrated in two males and two females. The four patients, 23 to 39 years old, were suffering from ileocolitis Crohn. After three to eight weeks of total parenteral nutrition they showed signs of acrodermatitis. Serum zinc was found considerably below normal levels (0,21--0,68 microgram/ml). After oral nutrition was re-initiated the dermatitis healed within four weeks without zinc oxid or zinc sulphate administration. Serum zinc increased to normal levels.

Urinary zinc excretion was found to be increased in patients with thyrotoxicosis when compared to euthyroid individuals. This increase did not appear to be due to an increase in creatinine clearance and was found to be strongly correlated with an index designed to assess the severity and acuteness of the metabolic response of the body to hyperthyroidism. The potential clinical significance of this finding is discussed.

Serum zinc concentrations in subjects of different ages were estimated by neutron activation analysis to obtain reliable reference values for the diagnosis of primary or secondary zinc deficiency during childhood. In these healthy individuals a small age-dependent variation of the mean values was found. Serum zinc concentrations were lower in cord blood (mean value: 880 X 10(-9) g/ml) and in infant;s (mean value: 820 X 10(-9) g/ml) than in adults (mean value 1178 X 10(-9) g/ml). In comparison to these values, the serum zinc concentration in a patient with secondary zinc deficiency and 4 patien…
