Fermented feeds contain abundant organic acids, amino acids, and small peptides, which improve the nutritional status as well as the morphology and microbiota composition of the intestine. Ginseng polysaccharides exhibit several biological activities and contribute to improving intestinal development. Here, Xuefeng black-bone chickens were fed a basal diet fermented by Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Enterococcus faecium, with or without ginseng polysaccharides. The 100% microbially fermented feed (Fe) and 100% microbially fermented feed and ginseng po

Effective and accurate primer design is an increasingly important skill as the use of PCR-based diagnostics in clinical and environmental settings is on the rise. While universal primer sets have been successfully designed for highly conserved core genes such as 16S rRNA and characteristic genes such as dsrAB and dnaJ, primer sets for mobile, accessory genes such as multidrug resistance efflux pumps (MDREP) have not been explored. Here, we describe an approach to create universal primer sets for select MDREP genes chosen from five superfamilies (SMR, MFS, MATE, ABC and RND) identified in a mod

This paper reports the synthesis of silver oxide (Ag2O) and moxifloxacin functionalized silver oxide (M-Ag2O) nanoparticles for photocatalytic and antimicrobial activity. The Ag2O nanoparticles were synthesized by using 2 dimethyl amino ethanol as reducing agent. The BET surface area measured from N2 adsorption method was found to be 16.89 m2/g. The mix (cubic and hexagonal) phase of silver oxide (Ag2O) nanoparticles was confirmed by X-rays diffraction (XRD). The extra diffracted peaks were observed after moxifloxacin fictionalization. The scanning electron micrographs display spherical shaped

BACKGROUND: Recombinant whole-cell sensors have already proven useful in the assessment of the bioavailability of environmental pollutants like heavy metals and organic compounds. In this work 19 recombinant bacterial strains representing various Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas fluorescens) bacteria were constructed to express the luminescence encoding genes luxCDABE (from Photorhabdus luminescens) as a response to bioavailable heavy metals ("lights-on" metal sensors containing metal-response elements, 13 strains) or

Xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) is responsible for the pathological condition called Gout. In the present study different flavones synthesized from chalcone were evaluated in vitro for their inhibitory activity. Inhibitory activity of flavones on XDH was determined in terms of inhibition of uric acid synthesis from Xanthine. The enzymatic activity was found maximum at pH 7.5 and temperature 40 degrees C. The flavones 6-chloro-2-[3-(4-hydroxy-phenyl)-1-phenyl-1-H-pyrazol-4-yl]-chromen-4-one (F(1)) and 6-chloro-7methyl-2-[3-(4-chloro-phenyl)-1-phenyl-1-H-pyrazol-4-yl]-chromen-4-one(F(2)),were nonco

Irrational application of chemical fertilizers causes soil nutrient imbalance, reduced microbial diversity, soil diseases, and other soil quality problems and is one of the main sources of non-point pollution. The application of microbial inoculant (MI) can improve the soil environment and crop growth to reduce problems caused by irrational application of chemical fertilizers. Field experiments were carried out in high-phosphorus soils to study the effects of the addition of various MIs combined with chemical fertilizers on soil properties, wheat growth, and soil microbial composition and stru

BACKGROUND: To cope with the growing number of severe diseases and intractable pathogens, drug innovation in both chemical structures and pharmacological efficiency has become an imperative global mission. Oxazolomycins are a unique family of polyketide-polypeptide antibiotics from Streptomyces with diverse functional groups in their structures, conferring them multifarious activities. But further development into clinical applications has been hindered for decades for many reasons. Among them, the yield improvement is a critical basis for activity evaluation and drug-like property optimizatio

Previous work has shown that dietary treatments affect woody breast (WB) incidence differently, which indicates that gut conditions such as gut barrier function, inflammation, and oxidative stress are likely related to WB. In this study, dietary supplementation with antibiotics (bacitracin) or probiotics (Bacillus subtilis) was investigated for their effects on the expression of transcripts related to gut barrier function, inflammation, and oxidative stress in the mucus lining of the jejunum from broilers with or without WB. A split-plot experimental design was used in this study. The dietary

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram positive foodborne pathogen that regularly causes outbreaks of systemic infectious diseases. The bacterium maintains a facultative intracellular lifestyle; it thrives under a variety of environmental conditions and is able to infect human host cells. L. monocytogenes is genetically tractable and therefore has become an attractive model system to study the mechanisms employed by facultative intracellular bacteria to invade eukaryotic cells and to replicate in their cytoplasm. Besides its importance for basic research, L. monocytogenes also serves as a paradigmat

There have been reports of different types of wound dressings for various functions and purposes. Cotton being one of the most widely used wound dressing material due to its non-toxic, biodegradable, and other properties is used for fabrication as well as in the form of scaffolds for faster and effective wound closure. Our research team has already demonstrated the role of silver nitroprusside nanoparticles (SNPNPs) for wound healing and antibacterial activity. In the current study, we have developed cotton fabric impregnated with SNPNPs (SNPCFs) which remain photo inert and displayed long-ter

BACKGROUND: The Leishmania developmental life cycle within its sand fly vector occurs exclusively in the lumen of the insect's digestive tract in the presence of symbiotic bacteria. The composition of the gut microbiota and the factors that influence its composition are currently poorly understood. A set of factors, including the host and its environment, may influence this composition. It has been demonstrated that the insect gut microbiota influences the development of several human pathogens, such as Plasmodium falciparum. For sand flies and Leishmania, understanding the interactions betwee

In this study, silica (SiO2) and β-acids were added to the chitosan films in order to improve the film's properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) were used to explore the structure of film. The results of mechanical test indicated that the film containing SiO2 (0.3%) and β-acids (0.3%) could obtain a significant tensile strength (10.04 MPa). The complex films possessed a good inhibitory effect on three types of bacteria, and good antioxidant activity (>56%, DPPH). The release mechanism of β-acids from t

Macrolides and ketolides comprise a family of clinically important antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis by binding within the exit tunnel of the bacterial ribosome. While these antibiotics are known to interrupt translation at specific sequence motifs, with ketolides predominantly stalling at Arg/Lys-X-Arg/Lys motifs and macrolides displaying a broader specificity, a structural basis for their context-specific action has been lacking. Here, we present structures of ribosomes arrested during the synthesis of an Arg-Leu-Arg sequence by the macrolide erythromycin (ERY) and the ketolide teli

Signal peptides direct proteins from the cytoplasm to the periplasm. These N-terminal peptides are cleaved upon entry to the periplasm by either signal peptidase I, or signal peptidase II for lipoproteins. Signal peptidase I is a serine protease that has either a serine-lysine or serine-histidine catalytic dyad present in the active site. The recognition site for signal peptide cleavage by signal peptidase I has been defined primarily by an Ala-X-Ala motif at the C-terminal end of the signal peptide, one amino acid away from the cleavage site. We used a verified set of signal peptidase I cleav

The gradual Cl replacement reactions of NN (1-3) or NO spirocyclic monoferrocenyl cyclotriphosphazenes (4 and 5) with the potassium salt of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (potassium vanillinate) resulted in the mono (1a-5a), geminal (gem-1b-5b), non-geminal (cis-5b and trans -1b-4b), tri (1c, 3c-5c) and tetra-vanillinato-substituted phosphazenes (1d-5d). All the phosphazene derivatives have stereogenic P-center(s), except tetra-substituted ones. The vanillinatophosphazenes have reversible voltammograms with one-electron anodic and cathodic peaks which are attributed to ferrocenyl redox probe.

The emerging global epidemic of drug-resistant tuberculosis has created an urgent need to identify novel therapeutic approaches for disease treatment. Transvalencin Z (1) is a natural product from Nocardia transvalensis with relatively potent and selective antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium smegmatis, making it an attractive target for structure-activity and mechanism of action studies. The total synthesis of the four possible diastereomers of transvalencin Z was completed (1a-d), and the absolute configurations were defined using chemical synthesis, HPLC retention times, and opt

The ribonucleoprotein enzyme RNase P catalyzes endonucleolytic 5'-maturation of tRNA primary transcripts in all domains of life. The indispensability of RNase P for bacterial cell growth and the large differences in structure and function between bacterial and eukaryotic RNase P enzymes comply with the basic requirements for a bacterial enzyme to be suitable as a potential novel drug target. We have identified RNA oligonucleotides that start to show an inhibitory effect on bacterial RNase P RNAs of the structural type A (for example, the Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae enzymes) at su
