Evaluation of bacterial agents isolated from endotracheal aspirate cultures of Covid-19 general intensive care patients and their antibiotic resistance profiles compared to pre-pandemic conditions.

BACKGROUND: Early reports have shown that critically ill patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 have a high prevalence of nosocomial pneumonia, particularly ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). METHOD: In the present study, we determined the bacterial agents isolated from endotracheal aspirate (ETA) cultures of Covid-19 general intensive care patients and evaluated the antibiotic resistance profiles of common bacterial agents compared to the pre-pandemic period. RESULTS: While a total of 119 significant growths with polymicrobial growths were detected in the ETA cultures of 73 (7.5%) of 971 pat

Preterm premature rupture of the membranes: Guidelines for clinical practice from the French College of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF).

In France, the frequency of premature rupture of the membranes (PROM) is 2%-3% before 37 weeks' gestation (level of evidence [LE] 2) and less than 1% before 34 weeks (LE2). Preterm delivery and intrauterine infection are the major complications of preterm PROM (PPROM) (LE2). Prolongation of the latency period is beneficial (LE2). Compared with other causes of preterm delivery, PPROM is associated with a clear excess risk of neonatal morbidity and mortality only in cases of intrauterine infection, which is linked to higher rates of in utero fetal death (LE3), early neonatal infection (LE2), and

Microbiological examinations and in-vitro testing of different antibiotics in therapeutic endoscopy of the biliary system.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Prior to endoscopic therapeutic procedures, no antibiotic prophylaxis is administered routinely. Because of the reported incidence of infectious complications, which may reach up to 10%, a prospective study was undertaken to investigate the effects of a prophylactic dose of cefuroxime on the incidence of bacteremia and clinical signs of infection, but no significant effects could be demonstrated. In addition to this published work, blood and bile cultures obtained in this trial were also investigated, and the in-vitro susceptibility to several antibiotics was tested

Drug-induced liver injury.

Drug hepatoxicity can be nonidiosyncratic (predictable), as in the case of acetaminophen, or idiosyncratic (unpredictable). This review article focuses primarily on idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury (DILI). New epidemiologic data suggest that approximately 20 new cases of DILI per 100,000 persons occur each year. Idiosyncratic DILI accounts for 11% of the cases of acute liver failure in the United States. Risk factors for DILI include medication dose, drug lipophilicity, and extent of hepatic metabolism. There is mixed evidence to support the role of host factors such as age, sex, and ch

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the maxilla and sinusitis maxillaris.

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are widely used as bone-stabilizers, but side effects of BP therapy include bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ), which is resistant to therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcome of maxillary BRONJ involving sinusitis maxillaris. 21 patients presenting with maxillary BRONJ, from 2005 to 2008, were included in the study. In 18 cases BP had been administered for carcinoma and in 3 cases for osteoporosis, with an average exposure time of 47.4 months. 12 patients spontaneously developed BRONJ. The 10 patients diagnosed with stage III BRONJ p

Antibiogram and molecular characterization of multi-drug resistant microorganisms isolated from urinary tract infections.

Bacteria are the commonest etiological factor among the microbes that cause UTIs. The most prevalent bacteria identified in the lab are Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Antibiotics are the empiric therapy for such infections but the reoccurrence rate is becoming high owing to the development of resistance due to their irrational and indiscriminate use across the globe. This study was designed on UTI cases of OPD, Medical, Nephrology, Surgical, Main OT, Urology and ICU wards of Allied hospital Faisalabad. 11 antibiotics were used which showed that E. coli is se

Antibacterial, anti-biofilm and anti-virulence activity of biosynthesized silver nanoparticles against drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Antibiotic resistance in bacteria has become a major concern for the effective treatment of infections; therefore, alternatives to antibiotics are being extensively researched to combat drug-resistant microbes. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were biosynthesized using aqueous extracts of papaya leaves (Carica papaya), cannabis leaves (Cannabis sativa), and cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) and characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and UV-visible spectrophotometry. Biosynthesized AgNPs were evaluated for their antibacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-virul

Risk Factors and Associated Outcomes of Virulence Genes eae, entB, and pipD Carriage in Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Salmonella spp. From HIV-1 and HIV-Negative Gastroenteritis Patients in the Dschang Regional Hospital Annex.

Background Enterobacteriaceae is one of the main families of gram-negative bacilli responsible for serious infections in humans. The severity of infection by these bacteria is a product of many factors, including virulence properties and antimicrobial resistance. This severity may be further intensified if there is an association between these factors and a depressed immune system, such as in HIV patients. This study aimed to determine the distribution of representative virulence genes among key Enterobacteriaceae isolates from HIV-1 and non-HIV gastroenteritis patients and the relationship be

[Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Pathogenic Gram-positive Anaerobic Cocci: Data of a University Hospital in Turkey].

Gram-positive anaerobic cocci (GPAC), a large group of anaerobic bacteria, are the members of the normal microbiota that colonizes the skin and mucosal surfaces of the human body. However, in case of a wound or when the host becomes immunocompromised, GPAC can cause invasive and most frequently mixed infections. GPAC are the second most frequently isolated bacteria in anaerobic infections. Although the studies are limited, GPAC have been reported to develop resistance to antimicrobial drugs. The resistance of the pathogens to the antimicrobials and improper therapy can cause poor clinical outc

Antimicrobial resistance profile of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases, adenosine-monophosphate-cyclic, and carbapenemase-producing Gram-negative bacteria isolated from domestic animals.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The production of beta-lactamase enzymes, such as extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), adenosine-monophosphate-cyclic (AmpC), and Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC), is one of the most important mechanisms of bacterial resistance to antimicrobials. Gram-negative bacteria show significant resistance due to various intrinsic and acquired factors. These intrinsic factors include low permeability of the outer membrane, various efflux systems, and the production of beta-lactamases, while acquired factors include chromosomal mutation and acquisition of resistance genes

A retrospective cohort study on early antibiotic use in vaccinated and unvaccinated COVID-19 patients.

The bacteriophage behavior of SARS-CoV-2 during the acute and post-COVID-19 phases appears to be an important factor in the development of the disease. The early use of antibiotics seems to be crucial to inhibit disease progression-to prevent viral replication in the gut microbiome, and control toxicological production from the human microbiome. To study the impact of specific antibiotics on recovery from COVID-19 and long COVID (LC) taking into account: vaccination status, comorbidities, SARS-CoV-2 wave, time of initiation of antibiotic therapy and concomitant use of corticosteroids and nonst

Oral versus intravenous empirical antibiotics in children and adolescents with uncomplicated bone and joint infections: a nationwide, randomised, controlled, non-inferiority trial in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Bone and joint infections (BJIs) are treated with intravenous antibiotics, which are burdensome and costly. No randomised controlled studies have compared if initial oral antibiotics are as effective as intravenous therapy. We aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of initial oral antibiotics compared with initial intravenous antibiotics followed by oral antibiotics in children and adolescents with uncomplicated BJIs. METHODS: From Sept 15, 2020, to June 30, 2023, this nationwide, randomised, non-inferiority trial included patients aged 3 months to 17 years with BJIs who pre
