The effect on the mitochondrial antigen of different agents known to influence the integrity and structure of membranes has been studied using quantitative complement fixation with autoantibodies from the serum of a patient with primary biliary cirrhosis. The susceptibility to proteolytic enzymes suggests that the antigen is a protein. Activity depends upon an association with phospholipids. Addition of phospholipids prevents loss of antigen during artificial ageing of mitochondria at 37°. Activity is lost after treatment with phospholipases or solvents which extract phospholipids. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of the review is an update of diagnosis and treatment of coccidioidomycosis infection in solid organ transplant (SOT) patients. Endemic fungal infections continue to be a cause of serious morbidity and mortality in transplant recipients.
RECENT FINDINGS: In transplant patients there are recommendations regarding screening in areas that are endemic for coccidioidomycosis. This screening involves serologic testing and chest imaging. Primary cultures of embryonic murine neurons and newborn mouse astrocytes were inoculated with West Nile virus (WNV) strain NY385-99 to compare the pathogenesis of WNV infection in these types of CNS cells. Two different outcomes were observed. WNV infection in the neurons was rapidly progressive and destructive; within 5 days, all of the neurons were destroyed through apoptosis. Echinococcosis has continued to be a worrying problem in endemic zones. An account is given in this paper of 25 years of experience in echinococcosis treatment. Reported are 575 patients on whom operations had been performed at the Surgical Clinic of Malaga University under the supervision of Professor Vara López. Fifty-six per cent of these patients were males and the remainder females. The disease was found to occur with regularity to all age groups.
