Restoration of sinus rhythm in atrial fibrillation (AF) by radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) is associated with a transient stunning of left atrial (LA) function. However, the long-term effects of different ablation strategies on LA function remain undetermined. We performed randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effects of RFCA, cryoablation, and 3D mapping-guided cryoablation on LA function of proximal AF patients within 1 year. The 3D mapping-guided cryoablation was defined as a maximum of two cryoablation procedures for each pulmonary vein accompanied by RFCA for additional poin

Percutaneous tumor ablation has faced a major growth in recent years with progressive expansion of clinical indications and subsequent adoption by national and international guidelines. Such techniques have become popular due to their minimally invasive profile and precise image-guided targeting resulting into a significant decrease of the procedure-related morbidity. Traditionally, malignant, and to lesser extent benign tumors, have been treated with these new techniques in several different organs including liver, kidney, lung and bone. More recently, other anatomic districts/organs includin

BACKGROUND: Ventricular tachyarrhythmias are the most common cause of death in patients with repaired tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), but predicting those at risk remains a challenge. An electrophysiology study (EPS) has been proposed to risk stratify patients with TOF.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate a perioperative EPS-guided approach to risk stratify patients with TOF undergoing pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) and guide concomitant cryoablation.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study of patients with TOF undergoing an EPS at the time of PVR from 2006 to 2017 was conducted at 2 centers. Patient

BACKGROUND: Transbronchial lung cryobiopsy (TBLC) can be indicated in diffuse parenchymal lung diseases (DPLDs) when a confident noninvasive diagnosis cannot be made. The 2 most relevant complications of TBLC are bleeding and pneumothorax (PTX). The accuracy of chest ultrasonography (US) for the detection of PTX is higher when compared to chest X-ray (CXR) with reference to computed tomography (CT) scan as a gold standard.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the accuracy of chest US in detecting PTX after TBLC in patients with DPLDs.
METHODS: Patients underwent TBLC during rigid bronchoscopy in deep sed

INTRODUCTION: Cryoballoon PVI has emerged as an alternative to radiofrequency PVI for the treatment of paroxysmal AF. The optimal strategy for patients with persistent AF is unclear as data are limited.
METHODS: We analyzed a prospective registry of consecutive patients with persistent AF who underwent Cryoballoon PVI at a single center between 2011 and 2014. Patients were assessed for atrial arrhythmia recurrence after a 3-month blanking period at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years postprocedure. Recurrence was based on typical symptoms, ECG, or event monitor evidence of AF. Kaplan-Meier analysis

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cryolipolysis is a safe, effective non-surgical procedure to reduce fat. For most cryolipolysis treatments, tissue is pulled between parallel cooling plates with a treatment duration of 60 minutes. A novel contoured cup, medium-sized applicator was developed to increase tissue contact with reduced skin tension and reduced treatment time. This prototype contoured cup was investigated with a standard cryolipolysis applicator to evaluate safety, efficacy, and patient preference.
STUDY DESIGN/MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prototype CoolCup medium-sized vacuum applicator (Cool

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) using the second-generation cryoballoon (CB2) in patients with paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) has demonstrated encouraging acute and mid-term results. Follow-up data on outcome beyond 1-year is lacking. The purpose of this analysis was to investigate the 2-year clinical outcome after CB2-based PVI.
METHODS: Sixty patients (age 62 ± 11 years) with paroxysmal [45/60 (75%) patients] or short-standing persistent AF [15/60 (25%) patients] underwent 28-mm CB2-based PVI. Freeze-cycle duration was 240 s. After successful PVI, a bonus free

BACKGROUND: Transseptal (TS) catheterization is needed to access the left heart during pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) procedures. In the radiofrequency (RF) ablation procedure, left atrial access is commonly achieved with a double TS puncture; cryoballoon (CB) ablation usually requires only a single TS puncture. Our aim was to compare the incidence of iatrogenic septal defect (IASD) between double transseptal conventional RF and CB ablation.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Individuals having undergone PVI as index procedure by RF or CB ablation and a subsequent transesophageal echocardiography examinati

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia with significant healthcare impact with regards to treatment costs, morbidity, and mortality. Many of the focal electrical activities that initiate and sustain atrial fibrillation have been found to reside within or near the pulmonary veins. Consequently, pulmonary vein isolation by catheter ablation has emerged as an effective method to eliminate the focal triggers associated with atrial fibrillation.
METHODS: In this single-center study, 205 patients were ablated for atrial fibrillation using a cryoballoon catheter and

INTRODUCTION: Cryoballoon (CB) pulmonary vein isolation (CB-PVI) for the treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) has been demonstrated to be safe and reliable. Preprocedural patient selection to address the high variability in pulmonary vein (PV) anatomy may improve the acute and chronic success of CB-PVI. The purpose of this study was to identify anatomical predictors for CB-PVI failure using the 28 mm balloon.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We included 47 patients with paroxysmal AF undergoing CB-PVI with the 28 mm CB. Anatomical global left atrial and PV selective parameters were quantified
