Characterization of asthma comorbidity in patients with functional/dissociative seizures.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological studies have suggested an association between asthma and functional/dissociative seizures (FDS). We compared demographic characteristics and pulmonary function test (PFT) findings in patients with FDS and comorbid asthma versus patients with asthma alone. METHOD: Patients with FDS and comorbid asthma and patients with asthma alone who had undergone PFTs were identified using ICD and CPT codes. Demographics, spirometry measures, and objective measures of asthma (bronchodilator reversibility, exhaled nitic oxide and methacholine challenge) were collected. Groups we

[Smoking and nicotine use, heated tobacco products, psychological and socioeconomic aspects of dependence, alcohol, infections, vaccination and diabetes mellitus (Update 2026)].

Smoking and passive smoking significantly increase both the incidence of diabetes and the risk of late complications. While complete smoking and nicotine cessation may lead to weight gain and an increased risk of diabetes, it nevertheless reduces cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. The basic diagnostic assessment (Fagerström test, exhaled carbon monoxide) is essential for successful smoking cessation. Evidence-based pharmacological options include varenicline, nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion and cytisine; glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists may be used as adjunctive t

Respiratory sound analysis in a rabbit tracheomalacia model.

Tracheomalacia, which softens the tracheal wall and leads to airway collapse during breathing, can be challenging to detect, especially in children, due to its vague symptoms and the invasive nature of standard diagnostic procedures. In this study, we developed a rabbit model of tracheomalacia by surgically removing a portion of the tracheal cartilage in New Zealand White rabbits. Breath sounds and airway pressure were recorded using a clinical-grade stethoscope setup. From each exhaled breath, 6,373 acoustic features were extracted, and 51 of these, which showed consistent and statistically s

Biomarkers for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with type-2 inflammation.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a heterogeneous lung disease traditionally characterized by neutrophilic inflammation. However, a distinct type-2 (T2) inflammatory endotype is present in 20% to 40% of patients. This review examines the pathophysiology and clinical consequences of T2 inflammation in COPD, focusing on established and emerging biomarkers to identify this treatable trait and guide targeted therapies. Orchestrated by TH2 cells and innate lymphoid cells, T2 inflammation involves the signature cytokines interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, and IL-13, which drive eosinophilic tis

Optimized Open-Source Setting for Subjecting Rodents to Chronic Normobaric Hypoxia in Facilities with Minimal Nitrogen Supply.

Very prevalent respiratory and cardiovascular diseases result in chronic hypoxia, promoting metabolic, kidney, heart, and other malignant diseases. Hypoxia research employs animal models based on chronically breathing hypoxic air (O2 < 21%), usually by injecting N2 into the animal's chamber. However, continuous high-flow N2 supply is available only in limited facilities, reducing the capability for hypoxia research to be widely conducted. Here, we describe an optimized setting for subjecting rodents to chronic normobaric hypoxia by requiring minimal N2 supply. The primary aim of this study was

Dual clinical remission in severe asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps: a comparative review of biologic therapies.

INTRODUCTION: Severe asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) are frequent comorbidities driven by common Type 2 inflammatory pathways. While biologics target both conditions, a standardized definition for 'dual clinical remission' is lacking. This review evaluates the comparative efficacy of current biologics to propose a unified treatment strategy. AREAS COVERED: We reviewed pivotal phase 3 and 4 trials (including SINUS-52, SYNAPSE, OSTRO, WAYPOINT, and the head-to-head EVEREST trial) evaluating dupilumab, mepolizumab, benralizumab, omalizumab, and tezepelumab. Infection Diagnostics Enabled by Selective Adsorption of Breath-Based Biomarkers in Zr-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Exhaled breath contains trace levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can reveal information about metabolic processes or pathogens in the body. These molecules can be used for medical diagnosis, but capturing and accurately measuring them is a significant challenge in chemical separations. A highly selective nanoporous sorbent can be used to capture target molecules from a breath sample and preconcentrate them for use in a detector. In this work, we present a combined predictive modeling-experimental validation study in which five Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were identif

Non-T2 asthma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the non-T asthma phenotypes. Asthma is an umbrella term that defines a complex group of heterogenous airway disorders, which are broadly categorized into predominantly T2 or non-T2 phenotypes depending on the presence and levels of airway and systemic biomarkers associated with a T2 inflammatory response. Individuals with predominant T2 asthma have greater numbers of peripheral blood eosinophils, exhaled nitric oxide and IgE. These patients have more atopy and earlier onset asthma. In contrast, the absence or low levels of the

A Gravimetric Room-Temperature CO2 Sensing Platform Enabled by Mg2(dobpdc) Functionalized with Diamines of Different Chain Lengths.

The continuous rise in carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations has become a significant global issue, exacerbated by the rapid expansion of industrial activities. Due to the inherent stability of CO2, conventional detection methods are often limited by their low sensitivity and selectivity. Inspired by the remarkable enrichment capabilities of metal-organic frameworks after diamine modification, which enables effective carbon dioxide adsorption through the specific binding between CO2 and diamines, combined with the gravimetric-sensing properties of quartz crystal microbalances, allows for CO2 det

High-Performance Ammonia Sensor Based on Bromocresol Green-Modified Visible Ag/PEEK Flexible Hollow Fiber: Theoretical Optimization, System Construction, and Breath Detection.

The rapid detection of ammonia in human breath has significant research value in clinical diagnosis and health monitoring. In this study, we reported a bromocresol green (BCG)-modified silver-coated poly(ether ether ketone) hollow fiber (Ag/PEEK HF) ammonia gas sensor. The sensor cleverly utilizes flexible Ag/PEEK HF as a visible light transmission waveguide and gas chamber, with a BCG molecule layer deposited on its inner surface as the sensing medium. A theoretical optimization model for the sensor was developed based on geometric optics principles and the Beer-Lambert law. Sensitivity enhan

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in Neurodegenerative Diseases (NDDs): Diagnostic Potential and Analytical Approaches.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are a group of progressive diseases affecting neuronal cells in specific areas of the brain, causing cognitive decline and movement impairment. Nowadays, NDDs play a significant role in the global burden of disease, and their incidence is increasing, particularly due to population aging. NDD onset is multi-factorial; based on the current knowledge, genetic, environmental, and cellular factors are believed to contribute to their occurrence and progression. Taking into account that at an early stage, the symptoms are not clearly defined, and diagnosis may be del
