BACKGROUND: An 11-year-old girl had undergone posterior spinal fusion surgery for scoliosis. The surgery was complicated by intraoperative bleeding, and hemostasis was achieved by topically applying gelatin sponges.
CASE DESCRIPTION: She developed acute pulmonary embolism and cardiac arrest during the surgery, which was confirmed by transesophageal echocardiography.
CONCLUSIONS: Autopsy shortly after revealed that her death was associated with unintended intravascular entry of gelatin sponge fragments, resulting in an embolic event and secondary cardiopulmonary collapse.

BACKGROUND: Iatrogenic migration of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters is a potentially life-threatening complication that can arise during blind insertion of central venous catheters when the guide wire becomes entangled with the filter. In this study, we reviewed the occurrence of iatrogenic migration of IVC filters in the literature and assessed methods for preventing this complication.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted to identify reports of filter/wire entrapment and subsequent IVC filter migration. Clinical outcomes and complications were identified.

Complications of laparoscopic adjustable gastric bands (LAGB) are well documented and may include migration, erosion, slippage, infection, pouch dilatation and, rarely, gastric perforation. We describe a rare case involving three such complications simultaneously, namely, gastric erosion, infection and migration through the pylorus-causing proximal jejunal obstruction. As LAGB is now the commonest performed bariatric procedure for the treatment of morbid obesity, we encourage the practising surgeon to be vigilant of these rare but potentially life-threatening complications.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, several methods of minimally-invasive thread-mediated lifting have been widely adopted in aesthetic surgery. Early use of these methods met with great enthusiasm, and threadlifting was often performed without sufficient regard for proper indications, controls, or outcomes.
