Exploring the Neuropsychological Correlates of Swallowing Disorders in People with Parkinson's Disease: a Cross-Sectional Study.

Around 80% of persons with Parkinson's disease (PD) present symptoms of dysphagia. Although cognitive impairment may contribute to dysphagia, few studies have investigated the association between the PD neuropsychological profile and objective measures of swallowing dysfunction. Since the swallowing function comprises involuntary but also voluntary actions, we hypothesize that specific measures of attention and executive functions can be underlined in PD-related dysphagia. Therefore, the aim of this study was to extensively investigate the correlation and the relationship between attentive and

Bath-plug technique for the endoscopic management of cerebrospinal fluid leaks in children.

IMPORTANCE: The safety and efficacy of the bath-plug technique for the closure of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks in children remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: We undertook this study to ascertain whether the bath-plug technique was safe and effective for the repair of CSF leaks. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent endoscopic repair of CSF leaks with the fat graft as a plug-in at Beijing Children's Hospital from March 2016 to May 2020. Demographic data, medical history, defect sites and sizes, interventions, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. One representative clinical ca

Multidrug resistant coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp. isolated from cases of chronic rhinosinusitis in humans. Study from Poland.

For many years, coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) have been considered non-pathogenic bacteria. However, recently, CoNS are becoming more common bacteriological factors isolated from cases of chronic rhinosinusitis in humans. Moreover, most of them represent the multidrug-resistant or/and methicillin-resistant profile, which significantly increases the therapeutic difficulties. The aim of the study was to characterize profile of resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from cases of chronic rhinosinusitis in patients treated in a Medical Center in Warsaw in 2015-2016. The stud

Endoscopic repair of spontaneous skull base defects decreases the incidence rate of intracranial complications.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous skull base defects can result in life-threatening intracranial complications (ICCs), including meningitis and pneumocephalus. Endoscopic skull base reconstruction (ESBR) has traditionally been the treatment of choice, but its impact upon ICCs is not known. In this study, we aimed to describe the incidence rate of preoperative ICCs in patients with spontaneous skull base defects, risk factors associated with ICC development, and the impact of surgical repair on the incidence rate of ICCs. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of all spontaneous skull base defect

Patterns of facial fractures in children.

Morbidity and mortality among children is usually the result of trauma. Because a child's face is retruded relative to the protecting skull, has a thicker layer of adipose tissue, more elastic bones, flexible sutures lines, the presence of tooth buds within the jaws, and the lack of pneumatisation of the sinuses, the facial bones fracture less commonly than in adults. Our aim was to assess the patterns of such fractures in children who presented to the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, King Edward Medical University/Mayo Hospital Lahore, Pakistan. All 535 eligible children between

Interventional Removal of Traumatic Nail from Skull Base After Endovascular Coiling of Internal Carotid Artery and Jugular Vein.

BACKGROUND: Cases of nail gun injuries to the head and neck are rare, and treatment approach varies with each case based on location and extent of injury. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of a 52-year-old male who fell off a roof holding a pneumatic nail gun and accidentally shot himself with a nail through the right frontal neck region. The nail penetrated the right sternocleidomastoid muscle and extended intracranially through the right occipital condyle with its tip embedded in the right cerebellar hemisphere. The nail coursed between the right distal cervical internal jugular vein and

Pneumosinus Dilatans: Over 100 Years Without an Etiology.

PURPOSE: Pneumosinus dilatans (PD) is a rare pathologic hyperaeration of the paranasal sinuses that causes serious deformation of the overlying bone and soft tissue. The condition occurs most commonly in the frontal sinus of young men who present with different complaints, including cosmetic. More than 100 cases have been reported in the literature since it was first described in 1898; however, the etiology of this condition remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of all available clinical publications on the subject of PD was conducted in the PubMed electronic database. T

Fatal Superior Sagittal Sinus and Torcular Thrombosis After Vestibular Schwannoma Surgery: Report of a Rare Complication and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare condition with the potential to cause severe morbidity and mortality. CVST can also occur after vestibular schwannoma (VS) surgery with the thrombosis of transverse and sigmoid sinus. However, there is not a single report of superior sagittal sinus (SSS) thrombosis after VS surgery reported in the literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 45-year-old woman presented to our center with large left-sided solid cystic VS. On admission she was dehydrated, and after clinical stabilization, she underwent gross total excision of tumor through left r

Primary intracranial neuroendocrine tumor with ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone syndrome: A rare and complicated case report and literature review.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) syndrome are frequent in adult patients. However, primary intracranial NETs, exhibiting immunonegativity for ACTH, high serum ACTH level and treated with anterior skull base reconstruction, are rare and complicated. We herein present a case of a primary intracranial NET immunonegative for ACTH, resulting in ectopic ACTH syndrome. A 40-year-old woman presented with intermittent rhinorrhea, rapid weight gain, polydipsia, polyuria, hypertension, dimness, bilateral exophthalmus, diminution of vision in the left eye and pig

Transnasal endoscopic approach to symptomatic sinonasal osteomas.

BACKGROUND: One of the most challenging benign tumors for the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeon is represented by sinonasal osteomas. Surgical treatment should regard just symptomatic osteomas, because these tumors can provoke rhinosinusitis and mucoceles. Recently, new instruments have been applied in endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). This study was designed to present our experience in the endoscopic management of osteomas of the paranasal sinuses. Clinical findings, preoperative imaging strategy, and surgical techniques are discussed. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical records o

Top 10 reasons for endoscopic maxillary sinus surgery failure.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Endoscopic sinus surgery has enjoyed impressive success curing chronic disease in sinuses and has virtually replaced the Caldwell-Luc procedure for correction of problems with the maxillary sinus. Unfortunately, a significant number of patients have persistent maxillary symptoms after one or more endoscopic sinus operations. Existing reviews of this issue have identified only a few general causes for surgical failure. METHODS: The records of 85 patients presenting to the author over a 5-year period with persistent maxillary sinus symptoms were reviewed. RESULTS: In revi

[The NEN (Nicolet Electronic Naviation System) ENT navigation system. Initial clinical application].

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative computer navigation will soon play an important role in procedures performed on the anterior and lateral skull base. Electromagnetic systems compared to optical systems offer some advantages such as small hardware dimension and free unimpaired mobility of the surgeon. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The NEN navigational system (Nicolet Electromagnetic Navigation System) was used in 22 patients who underwent microscopic/endoscopic surgery for polypoid rhinosinusitis. It is the prototype of a new system, which localizes the surgical probe via the measurement of pulsed electroma

Simulation and assessment of cerebrovascular damage in deep brain stimulation using a stereotactic atlas of vasculature and structure derived from multiple 3- and 7-tesla scans.

OBJECT: The most severe complication of deep brain stimulation (DBS) is intracranial hemorrhage. Detailed knowledge of the cerebrovasculature could reduce the rate of this disorder. Morphological scans typically acquired in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery (SFN) by using 1.5-T (or sometimes even 3-T) imaging units poorly depict the vasculature. Advanced angiographic imaging, including 3- and 7-T 3D time-of-flight and susceptibility weighted imaging as well as 320-slice CT angiography, depict the vessels in great detail. However, these acquisitions are not used in SFN clinical practice,
