Laser dermatology is an ever-expanding part of the specialty used extensively for both aesthetic and medical conditions. Advances in laser technology have led to an expansion in the number of devices available, with as a consequence an increase in the total number of complications. Fortunately, the current technology has improved greatly which adds to the safety profile of such devices; nevertheless, thorough knowledge of laser complications and how to avoid them is paramount for any practitioner who uses such technology.

Hypomelanosis of Ito is a neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by hypopigmented lesions occurring in streaks and whorls located on the trunk, head or extremities. The associated neurological manifestations include mental retardation, seizures, language disabilities and motor system dysfunction. Hemihypertrophy has also been described in this syndrome. We present a 3-month-old male infant with Hypomelanosis of Ito, hemi-hypertrophy and hemi-megalencephaly.

Reed nevus, also named pigmented spindle cell nevus, is a peculiar melanocytic nevus, now regarded as a variant of Spitz nevus by the majority of authors. It is characterized by spindle-shaped melanocytes disposed in nests located in epidermis and papillary dermis. It is usually heavily pigmented, and many melanophages may also be present. Hypopigmented Reed nevus shows all the typical features of conventional pigmented spindle cell nevus, but it does not contain abundant melanin. BACKGROUND: Hair pigmentation is regulated by several factors including the interaction of the ligand stem cell factor (SCF) with its class III receptor tyrosine kinase, c-kit. An interruption of SCF/c-kit signal transduction results in hair depigmentation.
OBSERVATIONS: A 69-year-old white woman developed hair depigmentation and fine-textured hair while being treated with the phase I chemotherapeutic agent GW786034, a class III/V receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Discontinuation of therapy resulted in a reversal of these hair changes.
