Clinical stem cell therapy in oral and craniofacial bone regeneration: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

UNLABELLED: Craniomaxillofacial bone regeneration poses significant clinical challenges due to the anatomical complexity of this region and the inherent limitations of conventional reconstructive techniques. Stem cell-based therapies have emerged as a promising alternative in that stem cells harness the capacities of multilineage differentiation and paracrine signaling to enhance tissue regeneration. Nonetheless, the overall clinical efficacy of stem cell therapy remains a subject of debate. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to comprehensively evaluate the safety and effect

Evaluation of cone-beam computed tomography in the diagnosis of simulated small osseous defects in the mandibular condyle.

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we investigated the impact of defect size and scan voxel size on the accuracy of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) diagnoses of simulated condylar defects and assessed the value of orthodontic CBCT images typically scanned at lower settings (0.4-mm voxel size and full-size field of view) in diagnosing condylar erosion defects. METHODS: Cylindrical holes simulating condylar defects with varied diameters (≤2, 2-3, and >3 mm) and depths (≤2 and >2 mm) were created in 22 fresh pig mandibular condyles, with defect number and size per condyle and quadrant randomly de

Three-dimensional modeling and finite element analysis in treatment planning for orthodontic tooth movement.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to demonstrate the potential of 3-dimensional modeling and finite element analysis as clinical tools in treatment planning for orthodontic tooth movement. High stresses in bone and miniscrew implants under load can cause fractures and trauma for orthodontic patients, and treatments are typically planned by using clinical experience or simple 2-dimensional radiographs. METHODS: Anatomically accurate 3-dimensional models reconstructed from cone-beam computed tomography scans were used to simulate the retraction of a single-rooted mandibular canine w

Immediate occlusal loading of Brånemark TiUnite implants placed predominantly in soft bone: 1-year results of a prospective clinical study.

BACKGROUND: The original Brånemark protocol for dental implant treatment was based on submerged healing prior to loading. However, immediate loading has been reported possible with high success rates for various indications, provided that good bone quality and quantity are present. In many of these studies, machined-surface implants have been used. Recently, a new surface texture has been developed, based on an oxidation processing, that aims to enhance the early bone response (Brånemark System Mk IV TiUnite , Nobel Biocare AB, Gothenburg, Sweden). It has been documented that this surface text

Bone formation in furcation defects. An experimental study in the dog.

The aim of the present investigation was to study bone formation in an experimentally-produced furcation defect in the dog. 15 foxhound dogs (group A) and 4 large mongrel dogs (group B) were used. The 2nd and 4th mandibular premolars were extracted and the 3rd lower premolars (3P3) were assigned as experimental teeth. "Through and through" furcation defects, about 4 mm high and 3 mm wide, were first produced in the experimental teeth of the dogs in group A. Reconstructive surgery was subsequently performed in group A using a GTR technique. The dogs of group A were scheduled for biopsy 2 weeks

Mandibular Gender Dimorphism: The Utility of Artificial Intelligence and Statistical Shape Modeling in Skeletal Facial Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In gender-affirming surgery, facial skeletal dimorphism is an important topic for every craniofacial surgeon. Few cephalometric studies have assessed this topic; however, they fall short to provide skeletal contour insights that direct surgical planning. Herein, we propose statistical shape modeling (SSM) as a novel tool for investigating mandibular dimorphism for young white individuals. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective study was performed using computed tomography (CT) scans of white individuals, aged 20 to 39 years old. AI-assisted, three-dimensional (3D) mandibles were

Role of Multidetector Computed Tomography in the Evaluation of Maxillofacial Trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Maxillofacial fractures are among the commonest injuries occurring in trauma patients. Multislice computed tomography (CT) is a widely used radiological investigation that accurately reveals the number, location, and extent of the fractures as well as concomitant soft tissue injuries and has been found to be superior in the diagnosis of maxillofacial fractures owing to high sensitivity and specificity. This study was performed to assess the efficacy of axial, coronal, sagittal, and three-dimensional (3D) reformatted images in the detection of fractures in maxillofacial trauma. M

Micro-CT Analysis of Radiation-Induced Osteopenia and Bone Hypovascularization in Rat.

Treatment of carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract often requires external radiation therapy. However, radiation affects all the components of bone, with different degrees of sensitivity, and may produce severe side effects such as mandibular osteoradionecrosis (ORN). Intraosseous vascularization is thought to be decreased after irradiation, but its impact on total bone volume is still controversial. The aim of this study was to compare intraosseous vascularization, cortical bone thickness, and total bone volume in a rat model of ORN versus nonirradiated rats, using a micro-computed tomo

Tumor suppressor gene mutation in a patient with a history of hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor syndrome and healed generalized osteitis fibrosa cystica: a case report and genetic pathophysiology review.

Hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor (HPT-JT) was first observed by Jackson in 1958 in a family who exhibited hyperparathyroidism and recurrent pancreatitis. The author noticed the presence of jaw tumors in the affected family and reported them as fibrous dysplasia. However, it was not until 1990 that a familial variety of hyperparathyroidism with fibro-osseous jaw tumors was recognized as HPT-JT syndrome and reported as a clinically and genetically distinct syndrome. Hyperparathyroidism generally arises from glandular hyperplasia or parathyroid adenomas, with only about 1% of cases resulting from pa

Disease control, survival, and functional outcome after multimodal treatment for advanced-stage tongue base cancer.

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection and postoperative radiation for advanced-stage malignancies of the oral cavity, oropharynx, and hypopharynx result in a dismal overall survival of 38%. Patients with carcinoma of the tongue base frequently have advanced disease at the time of presentation, and combined-modality therapy is usually required to achieve cure. Because of the poor survival rates with advanced malignancies with standard therapy, new and innovative approaches continue to be developed in an attempt to have a greater impact on disease control, patient survival, and functional outcome after

Cranial nerves of the coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae [Osteichthyes: Sarcopterygii: Actinistia], and comparisons with other craniata.

We reconstructed the cranial nerves of a serially sectioned prenatal coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae. This allowed us to correct several mistakes in the literature and to make broad phylogenetic comparisons with other craniates. The genera surveyed in our phylogenetic analysis were Eptatretus, Myxine, Petromyzon, Lampetra, Chimaera, Hydrolagus, Squalus, Mustelus, Polypterus, Acipenser, Lepisosteus, Amia, Neoceratodus, Protopterus, Lepidosiren, Latimeria and Ambystoma. Cladistic analysis of our data shows that Latimeria shares with Ambystoma two characters of the cranial nerves. Our chief findi
