Oral pathologies of the Neolithic Iceman, c.3,300 BC.

The famous Iceman 'Ötzi' (South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, Bolzano, Italy), a Neolithic human ice mummy, offers a unique opportunity to study evolutionary aspects of oral disease. The aim of this study was to assess, for the very first time, his oral cavity, which surprisingly had never been examined systematically. Based on several computed tomography (CT) scans from 1991 onwards and on macroscopic investigation, only a few findings, such as a central maxillary diastema, heavy abrasions, and missing wisdom teeth, were known. We re-evaluated the latest CT scans from 2005 and found various or

Situs inversus with dextrocardia in a mummy case.

A mummy of a young woman, who died due to tuberculous peritonitis and salpingitis, is conserved in the Pathological Anatomy Museum of the University of Padua. It was found at autopsy to have situs inversus of viscera with dextrocardia, apparently in the absence of other congenital defects. A 64-section scanner computed tomography (CT) on the specimen was carried out to investigate the internal condition of organs. The CT revealed the presence in the heart of a muscular ventricular septal defect and of calcific deposits on visceral pericardium and aortic wall, in keeping with sequelae of previo

[MSCT optimal examination time for unconspicuous rib fracture].

OBJECTIVE: To explore MSCT optimal examination time for patients with unconspicuous rib fracture. METHODS: Sixty-three patients with thoracic trauma from January 2009 to June 2011 were collected. They were examined by MSCT in the first week after trauma and re-examined during eighth weeks after trauma. The number of rib which had been found fractured in the first examination was compared to that in re-examinations. RESULTS: Patients with fine rib fracture often have different diagnostic results at different examination time after trauma. There was statistical difference between the number in

A rare cause of abdominal angina.

The authors report a case of a young male with median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS). An abnormally low insertion of the median arcuate ligament fibres caused extrinsic compression and stenosis of the coeliac trunk. However, partial dissection of ligament fibres by laparoscopic surgery did not relieve abdominal angina. Multidetector CT confirmed that MALS did not differ from the preoperative scan. The arcuate ligament compressed the coeliac trunk on expiration, thereby eliciting occlusion of the coeliac trunk. Inspiration induced decompression of the ligament with partial release of occlusio

[Clinical and radiation diagnosis of circumscribed peritonitis complicating duodenal perforation].

This paper deals with the results of ultrasound (US) and multislice computed tomography (MSCT) in patients with perforated duodenal ulcer in different periods after the onset of the disease, with varying clinical manifestations, and in the postoperative period. A comparative analysis of the results of radiation studies has indicated that X-ray study is a basic technique that defines treatment policy in the early development periods of perforation; US study (USS) reveals a change in the duodenum, fluid and infiltration outside the duodenum. As circumscribed peritonitis progresses, USS allows th

Three-dimensional imaging of vocalizing larynx by ultra-high-resolution computed tomography.

PURPOSE: Ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (UHRCT) is an emerging imaging technology that is able to achieve simultaneous 160 slices with super-thin 0.25 mm thickness. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of UHRCT to visualize laryngeal structure and kinetics. METHODS: Three normal volunteers and three patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) were incorporated in this case series. First, images were taken under five conditions in normal volunteers. Five tasks consisted of (1) air inspiration through the nose (IN), (2) breath holding (BH), (3) sustained v

Small bowel neoplasms: enhancement patterns and differentiation using post-contrast multiphasic multidetector CT.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to analyze the enhancement patterns of small bowel neoplasms on post-contrast multiphasic multidetector CT and to assess the diagnostic capacity for differentiating five tumor types. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of data on 92 small bowel neoplasms. The neoplasms were categorized into five groups according to pathology findings, not imaging findings (23 adenocarcinomas; 22 lymphomas; 19 metastases; 18 gastrointestinal stromal tumors [GIST]; 10 neuroendocrine tumors [NET]). RESULTS: GIST and NET demonstrated a hypervascular pattern i

Retrieval of a Broken Dental Needle Close to the Facial Artery After Cervical Migration.

Use of imaging tools like digital C-arm, tridimensional tomography, and navigational surgery has proven its value to the surgical removal of broken needles. A 32-year-old patient was referred for evaluation of a fractured needle during inferior alveolar nerve block attempt few days before. The patient complained of a pricking sensation at the injured area while moving the neck. A contrasted computed tomography was performed for further evaluation of the needle toward the vascular network of the neck, showing a close location by the left facial artery, parallel to the styloid process of the tem

Multiphase computed tomography for localization of parathyroid disease in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism: How many phases do we really need?

BACKGROUND: Multiphase computed tomography (CT) involves multiple cervical CT acquisitions to accurately identify hyperfunctional parathyroid glands, thus increasing radiation exposure to the patient. We hypothesized that only 2 cervical acquisitions, instead of the conventional 4, would provide equivalent localization information and halve the radiation exposure. METHODS: We identified 53 consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who underwent multiphase CT before parathyroidectomy. All scans were reinterpreted first using 2 phases then using all 4 phases. The accuracies of inter

Multidetector CT and three-dimensional CT angiography of upper extremity arterial injury.

Successful management of upper extremity arterial injury requires fast and accurate diagnosis. The rate of limb preservation depends on the location, severity, and time of ischemia. Indications for diagnostic imaging depend on the mechanism and type of injury, clinical signs, cardiovascular stability, and clinical suspicion. Because of ease of access, speed, and high accuracy for this diagnosis, multidetector computed tomographic (MDCT) angiography is often used as the first line imaging modality. MDCT systems with 64 slice configuration and more afford high temporal and spatial high-resolutio

MRI and MDCT Findings of Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma in the Oral Cavity of a Neonate: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare, locally aggressive vascular tumor of childhood. However, a detailed description of its imaging features, especially for neonatal oral cavity lesions, is lacking in the literature, with no prior reports detailing both prenatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and postnatal multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) findings. This report presents a case of neonatal KHE, focusing on its distinctive imaging manifestations on both modalities to provide diagnostic insights for this rare condition in an unusual location. CASE PRESENTATION

Can arch anatomy predict the outcome of repaired aortic coarctation? A novel radiological parameter.

PURPOSE: The impact of arch anatomy on the prognosis of aortic coarctation of the aorta (COA) is not well established. We aim to assess the relationship between arch anatomy and the short- and long-term prognosis after surgical repair. METHODS: Patients with COA operated on the period between 11/2007 and 03/2016 were retrospectively recruited. Anatomical analysis of the aortic arch was done using Multidetector CT with measurement of the inter-branch distances between left common carotid artery, innominate artery, and left subclavian. We classified patients into group I, whose distance ratio (

New Perspectives in the Etiology of Chronic Rhinosinusitis-Haller Cells.

Background and Objectives: Haller Cells (HCs) represent the abnormal migration of ethmoid cells that are located below the ethmoid bulla at the level of the upper wall of the maxillary sinus. Through their placement, the cells can exert a mass effect on the infundibulum of the maxillary sinus. The aim of our study is to investigate the prevalence of Haller cells in the Romanian population and to evaluate the relationship between this anatomical variation and chronic rhinosinusitis. Secondly, we want to morphometrically evaluate the impact of Haller cells' presence in the drainage paths of the

Computed tomography is better than echocardiography in predicting balloon-expandable transcutaneous implantation valve size in a real-world clinical practice single-center study.

AIMS: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has become the standard of care for selected patients with severe aortic stenosis. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and transoesophageal 2D/3D (two-dimensional/three-dimensional) echocardiography (ECHO) are used for aortic annulus (AA) sizing. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of AA sizing by ECHO versus MDCT for Edwards Sapien balloon expandable valve in a single center. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data from 145 consecutive patients with TAVR (Sapien XT or Sapien S3) were analyzed retrospectively. A total of 139 (96%) patie…

Contrast-enhanced computed tomography assessment of aortic stenosis.

OBJECTIVES: Non-contrast CT aortic valve calcium scoring ignores the contribution of valvular fibrosis in aortic stenosis. We assessed aortic valve calcific and non-calcific disease using contrast-enhanced CT. METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of 164 patients (median age 71 (IQR 66-77) years, 78% male) with aortic stenosis (41 mild, 89 moderate, 34 severe; 7% bicuspid) who underwent echocardiography and contrast-enhanced CT as part of imaging studies. Calcific and non-calcific (fibrosis) valve tissue volumes were quantified and indexed to annulus area, using Hounsfield unit thresholds cal
