External parasites of dairy cattle.

Insects such as stable flies, house flies, horn flies, face flies, mosquitoes, horse flies, deer flies, cattle grubs, and lice as well as ticks and mites are the major external parasites of dairy animals in the United States. These pests cause obvious discomfort to livestock and economic effects of heavy populations usually are discerned easily. However, research efforts to date have failed to establish reproducible losses caused by specific ectoparasites. Research efforts involving a multidisciplinary systems approach are necessary to provide the data needed to develop total dairy management

[A case of external ophthalmomyiasis by Oestrus ovis, Linné, 1758 caught on the Nice beach (author's transl)].

A case of external ophthalmomyiasis by Oestrus ovis is recorded from Provence-Côte-d'Azur (France). The patient has been constaminated on the Nice beach far away from the breeding areas of sheep and goats which are the usual host of this fly. One larva specimen, which was found in the patient's eye, is described and compared to the larva of Rhinoestrus purpureus, another agent of external human ophthalmomyiasis.

Scanning electron microscopy of Gasterophilus intestinalis lesions of the equine stomach.

The lesions caused by larvae of Gasterophilus intestinalis in the cardiac region of the equine stomach were funnel-shaped ulcers surrounded by a rim of hyperplastic epithelial cells. Bacteria were commonly seen on the rim of epithelial cells, at the base of some ulcers, and within the cavities produced by the hooks of the larvae. Cellular debris and mucus were within the ulcer.

External ophthalmomyiasis caused by Estrus ovis.

External ophthalmomyiasis occurred in a 16-year-old white girl who was infected on Catalina Island, an endemic area for the sheep bot fly. With the patient under topical anesthesia, we isolated the larva, Estrus ovis, removed it with jewelers' forceps, and examined it with light and scanning electron microscopy. The patient responded well to a treatment regimen of corticosteroids and antibiotics.

The New World Screwworm in the United States: A Narrative Review Anchored to the 2025 Travel-Associated Human Case.

The New World screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) is an obligate parasitic fly whose larvae invade and consume living tissue, causing myiasis with severe consequences for human health, animal welfare, and agricultural productivity. Although eradicated from the United States in the 1960s through the sterile insect technique (SIT) and contained thereafter by a Panama-based biological barrier, the parasite remains endemic in parts of South America and the Caribbean. Endemicity in these regions sustains the risk of reintroduction into screwworm-free areas. A recent travel-associated case of human …

First description of immature stages and notes on the biology of the blow fly, Calliphora lopesi Mello, 1962.

Several species of the worldwide distributed genus Calliphora Robineau-Desvoidy (Insecta, Diptera, Calliphoridae) are medically important vectors and agents of myiasis. Furthermore, these flies are relevant in forensics because they are found in corpses. Information regarding the taxonomy, bionomics and distribution of Calliphora species endemic to South America, including Calliphora lopesi Mello, is scarce. To expand knowledge on C. lopesi, this study presents descriptions of eggs, larvae, puparia and developmental data at 14, 17, 20, 23 and 26 ± 1°C for the first time. Adult flies were colle…

Ultrastructural changes in epithelial cells on different stages of sinantropic muscoid dipterans fed with spores of Brevibacillus laterosporus.

Brevibacillus laterosporus is a sporulating bacteria, with typical canoe-shaped parasporal bodies attached to the spores. It has shown great biotechnological potential, including its broad pathogenic spectrum against different orders of insects and other invertebrates with medical-veterinary-sanitary importance. The high degree of synanthropy of muscoid dipterans and the damage they cause being a source of myiasis and carriers of pathogens encourage research into their population control. The objective of the study was to evaluate the histopathological effects caused by B. laterosporus NRS 590…

Toxic effect of Callistemon viminalis essential oil on the ovary of engorged Rhipicephalus microplus female ticks (Acari: Ixodidae).

Rhipicephalus microplus is the main ectoparasite of cattle and its parasitism can reduce weight gain of hosts, in addition to causing anemia, increasing the risk of myiasis, and resulting in the transmission of Babesia bovis and Anaplasma marginale, among other pathogens. The use of synthetic chemicals plays an important role in controlling these ticks. However, its frequent and indiscriminate use has contributed to the selection of resistant strains, resulting in greater interest in the search for natural-origin products. The shrub Callistemon viminalis (Myrtaceae), also known as weeping bott…

Comparative Analysis of Different ELISA Methods for the Serodiagnosis of Przhevalskiana silenus Infestation in Goats.

Przhevalskiana silenus (warble fly) grubs cause myiasis in goats, in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas and different regions in Pakistan, and cause substantial losses to livestock. The palpation method for detecting warble flies generally neglects the infestation intensity; therefore, the development of a reliable and efficient diagnostic technique is extremely necessary. This study compared three indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods for detecting anti-P. silenus antibodies using the hypodermin C (HyC) purified from Hypoderma spp. Larvae collected in cattle (local is…

Delusional Parasitosis in a School Teacher Living in a Rural Area: Parasitological Approach.

Delusional parasitosis is a psychotic illness. Patients often present to dermatologists with scars that are self-inflicted because they atte … not produce any extrusion of macroparasites, and no parasites such as helminths and insect larvae (myiasis), were observed during microscopy. Thin smear scrapings were stained and examined to rule out parasitic diseases such as leishmaniasis and mycosis; however, no evidence of parasites was found. Our patient was administered with amisulpride 100 mg twi …

Applying spatial analysis of genetic and environmental data to predict connection corridors to the New World screwworm populations in South America.

The myiasis causing New World screwworm (NWS) fly is responsible for substantial losses to livestock breeders in the Americas. Due to the negative impact of the NWS fly in animal health, expansion of successful NWS fly eradication programmes is under discussion. However, the effects of geography and environmental diversity on NWS population structure and migration patterns need to be assessed before any political decision is made to implement such a programme. We present a GIS tool to construct potential connection corridors among sampling localities based on genetic and environmental data. We…

Rates of development of immatures of three species of Chrysomya (Diptera: Calliphoridae) reared in different types of animal tissues: implications for estimating the postmortem interval.

Blowflies have major medical and sanitary importance because they can be vectors of viruses, bacteria, and helminths and are also causative agents of myiasis. Also, these flies, especially those belonging to the genus Chrysomya, are among the first insects to arrive at carcasses and are therefore valuable in providing data for the estimation of the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). The PMImin can be calculated by assessing the weight, length, or development stage of blowfly larvae. Lack of information on the variables that might affect these parameters in different fly species can generate…

Identification of oviposition attractants of the secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria (F.) released from rotten chicken liver.

The secondary screwworm, Cochliomyia macellaria (F.), is an important blowfly species affecting both livestock and humans. It can transmit pathogenic disease agents mechanically and is an agent of facultative myiasis, which leads to economic losses. The adult flies are attracted to decomposing carcasses, carrion, or rotten meat in order to deposit their eggs, and the hatched larvae develop on these decaying organic materials. This research was aimed to identify volatiles emitted from rotten chicken livers that were reported previously to attract gravid females. In laboratory oviposition assays…
