Thermal Change Index-Based Diabetic Foot Thermogram Image Classification Using Machine Learning Techniques.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) can lead to plantar ulcers, amputation and death. Plantar foot thermogram images acquired using an infrared camera have been shown to detect changes in temperature distribution associated with a higher risk of foot ulceration. Machine learning approaches applied to such infrared images may have utility in the early diagnosis of diabetic foot complications. In this work, a publicly available dataset was categorized into different classes, which were corroborated by domain experts, based on a temperature distribution parameter-the thermal change index (TCI). We then explor

Artificial intelligence to evaluate postoperative pain based on facial expression recognition.

BACKGROUND: Pain intensity evaluation by self-report is difficult and biased in non-communicating people, which may contribute to inappropriate pain management. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) to evaluate pain intensity based on automated facial expression analysis has not been evaluated in clinical conditions. METHODS: We trained and externally validated a deep-learning system (ResNet-18 convolutional neural network) to identify and classify 2810 facial expressions of 1189 patients, captured before and after surgery, according to their self-reported pain intensity using numeric ratin

An Analysis of New Feature Extraction Methods Based on Machine Learning Methods for Classification Radiological Images.

The lungs are COVID-19's most important focus, as it induces inflammatory changes in the lungs that can lead to respiratory insufficiency. Reducing the supply of oxygen to human cells negatively impacts humans, and multiorgan failure with a high mortality rate may, in certain circumstances, occur. Radiological pulmonary evaluation is a vital part of patient therapy for the critically ill patient with COVID-19. The evaluation of radiological imagery is a specialized activity that requires a radiologist. Artificial intelligence to display radiological images is one of the essential topics. Using

Clinical validation of saliency maps for understanding deep neural networks in ophthalmology.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have achieved physician-level accuracy on many imaging-based medical diagnostic tasks, for example classification of retinal images in ophthalmology. However, their decision mechanisms are often considered impenetrable leading to a lack of trust by clinicians and patients. To alleviate this issue, a range of explanation methods have been proposed to expose the inner workings of DNNs leading to their decisions. For imaging-based tasks, this is often achieved via saliency maps. The quality of these maps are typically evaluated via perturbation analysis without experts

Quantitative estimation of pulmonary artery wedge pressure from chest radiographs by a regression convolutional neural network.

Recent studies reported that a convolutional neural network (CNN; a deep learning model) can detect elevated pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) from chest radiographs, the diagnostic images most commonly used for assessing pulmonary congestion in heart failure. However, no method has been published for quantitatively estimating PAWP from such radiographs. We hypothesized that a regression CNN, an alternative type of deep learning, could be a useful tool for quantitatively estimating PAWP in cardiovascular diseases. We retrospectively enrolled 936 patients with cardiovascular diseases who h

Semi-Supervised Learning for Automatic Atrial Fibrillation Detection in 24-Hour Holter Monitoring.

Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) is generally diagnosed by long-term dynamic electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring. Identifying AF episodes from long-term ECG data can place a heavy burden on clinicians. Many machine-learning-based automatic AF detection methods have been proposed to solve this issue. However, these methods require numerous annotated data to train the model, and the annotation of AF in long-term ECG is extremely time-consuming. Reducing the demand for labeled data can effectively improve the clinical practicability of automatic AF detection methods. In this study, we developed

Automated Segmentation of Mass Regions in DBT Images Using a Dilated DCNN Approach.

To overcome the limitations of conventional breast screening methods based on digital mammography, a quasi-3D imaging technique, digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has been developed in the field of breast cancer screening in recent years. In this work, a computer-aided architecture for mass regions segmentation in DBT images using a dilated deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) is developed. First, to improve the low contrast of breast tumour candidate regions and depress the background tissue noise in the DBT image effectively, the constraint matrix is established after top-hat transforma

Deep Denoising of Raw Biomedical Knowledge Graph From COVID-19 Literature, LitCovid, and Pubtator: Framework Development and Validation.

BACKGROUND: Multiple types of biomedical associations of knowledge graphs, including COVID-19-related ones, are constructed based on co-occurring biomedical entities retrieved from recent literature. However, the applications derived from these raw graphs (eg, association predictions among genes, drugs, and diseases) have a high probability of false-positive predictions as co-occurrences in the literature do not always mean there is a true biomedical association between two entities. OBJECTIVE: Data quality plays an important role in training deep neural network models; however, most of the c

Virtual Reality and Internet of Things-Based Music Online Learning via the Graph Neural Network.

Virtual reality and the Internet of Things have shown their capability in a variety of tasks. However, their availability in online learning remains an unresolved issue. To bridge this gap, we propose a virtual reality and Internet of Things-based pipeline for online music learning. The one graph network is used to generate an automated evaluation of learning performance which traditionally was given by the teachers. To be specific, a graph neural network-based algorithm is employed to identify the real-time status of each student within an online class. In the proposed algorithm, the characte

Automated detection of cerebral microbleeds via segmentation in susceptibility-weighted images of patients with traumatic brain injury.

Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are a recognised biomarker of traumatic axonal injury (TAI). Their number and location provide valuable information in the long-term prognosis of patients who sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Accurate detection of CMBs is necessary for both research and clinical applications. CMBs appear as small hypointense lesions on susceptibility-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (SWI). Their size and shape vary markedly in cases of TBI. Manual annotation of CMBs is a difficult, error-prone, and time-consuming task. Several studies addressed the detection of CMBs in o

An interpretable neural network for outcome prediction in traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a common condition with potentially severe long-term complications, the prediction of which remains challenging. Machine learning (ML) methods have been used previously to help physicians predict long-term outcomes of TBI so that appropriate treatment plans can be adopted. However, many ML techniques are "black box": it is difficult for humans to understand the decisions made by the model, with post-hoc explanations only identifying isolated relevant factors rather than combinations of factors. Moreover, such models often rely on many variables, some

Comparison of machine learning methods for the detection of focal cortical dysplasia lesions: decision tree, support vector machine and artificial neural network.

BACKGROUND: Accurate classification of focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) has been challenging due to the problematic visual detection in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Hence, recently, there has been a necessity for employing new techniques to solve the problem. Among the new techniques for FCD lesion diagnosis, classification techniques can be of great help in FCD patient's detection from healthy individuals. METHODS: MRI data were collected from 58 participants (30 subjects with FCD type II and 28 normal subjects). Morphological and intensity-based characteristics were calculated for each c

Deep Learning Achieves Neuroradiologist-Level Performance in Detecting Hydrocephalus Requiring Treatment.

In large clinical centers a small subset of patients present with hydrocephalus that requires surgical treatment. We aimed to develop a screening tool to detect such cases from the head MRI with performance comparable to neuroradiologists. We leveraged 496 clinical MRI exams collected retrospectively at a single clinical site from patients referred for any reason. This diagnostic dataset was enriched to have 259 hydrocephalus cases. A 3D convolutional neural network was trained on 16 manually segmented exams (ten hydrocephalus) and subsequently used to automatically segment the remaining 480 e

Characterizing functional brain networks via Spatio-Temporal Attention 4D Convolutional Neural Networks (STA-4DCNNs).

Characterizing individualized spatio-temporal patterns of functional brain networks (FBNs) via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provides a foundation for understanding complex brain function. Although previous studies have achieved promising performances based on either shallow or deep learning models, there is still much space to improve the accuracy of spatio-temporal pattern characterization of FBNs by optimally integrating the four-dimensional (4D) features of fMRI. In this study, we introduce a novel Spatio-Temporal Attention 4D Convolutional Neural Network (STA-4DCNN) model t

MNC-Net: Multi-task graph structure learning based on node clustering for early Parkinson's disease diagnosis.

PURPOSE: The identification of early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) is important for the effective management of patients, affecting their treatment and prognosis. Recently, structural brain networks (SBNs) have been used to diagnose PD. However, how to mine abnormal patterns from high-dimensional SBNs has been a challenge due to the complex topology of the brain. Meanwhile, the existing prediction mechanisms of deep learning models are often complicated, and it is difficult to extract effective interpretations. In addition, most works only focus on the classification of imaging and ignore cli

Triploid genetic algorithm for convolutional neural network-based diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment.

The diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which is deemed a formative phase of dementia, may greatly assist clinicians in delaying its headway toward dementia. This article proposes a deep learning approach based on a triploid genetic algorithm, a proposed variant of genetic algorithms, for classifying MCI converts and non-converts using structural magnetic resonance imaging data. It also explores the effect of the choice of activation functions and that of the selection of hyper-parameters on the performance of the model. The proposed work is a step toward automated convolutional neur
