Hippocampal activity during memory and visual perception: The role of representational content.

The functional organisation of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) has long been described on the basis of cognitive processes such as recollection or familiarity. However, this view has recently been challenged, and researchers have proposed decomposing cognitive phenomena into representations and operations. According to the representational view, representations, such as scenes for the hippocampus and objects for the perirhinal cortex, are critical in understanding the role of MTL regions in cognition. In the present study, 51 healthy young participants underwent functional magnetic resonance im

VisTR: Visualizations as Representations for Time-Series Table Reasoning.

Time-series table reasoning interprets temporal patterns and relationships in data to answer user queries. Despite recent advancements leveraging large language models (LLMs), existing methods often struggle with pattern recognition, context loss in long time-series data, and the lack of visual-based reasoning capabilities. To address these challenges, this paper proposes VisTR, a framework that places visualizations at the core of the reasoning. By transforming tables into fixed-size visualization references, VisTR captures key trends, anomalies, and temporal relationships, facilitating intui

Action planning modulates the representation of object features in human fronto-parietal and occipital cortex.

The visual cortex has been extensively studied to investigate its role in object recognition but to a lesser degree to determine how action planning influences the representation of objects' features. We used functional MRI and pattern classification methods to determine if during action planning, object features (orientation and location) could be decoded in an action-dependent way. Sixteen human participants used their right dominant hand to perform movements (Align or Open reach) towards one of two 3D-real oriented objects that were simultaneously presented and placed on either side of a fi

Differential Involvement of the Anterior Temporal Lobes in Famous People Semantics.

The ability to recognize a famous person occurs through semantic memory. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that the anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) are involved in the recognition of famous people. However, it is still a matter of debate whether the semantic processing of names or pictures of famous people has an impact on the activation of ATLs. The aim of this study was to explore the pattern of activation associated with a semantic processing of famous people based on face and written name stimuli. Fifteen healthy young individuals participated in our fMRI study, in which they were as

Bridging Visual Intuition and Chemical Expertise: A Virtual Collaborative Framework for Autonomous Nonadiabatic Dynamics Analysis.

Analyzing nonadiabatic molecular dynamics trajectories traditionally heavily relies on expert intuition and visual pattern recognition, a process that is difficult to formalize. We present VisU, a vision-driven framework that leverages the complementary strengths of two state-of-the-art large language models (Doubao-Seed-1.6-Vision and DeepSeek-V3.2) to establish a "virtual research cooperation". This operates through a "Mentor-Engineer-Student" paradigm that mimics the collaborative intelligence of a professional chemistry laboratory. Within this ecosystem, the Mentor provides physical intuit

Posterior cortical atrophy: A rare variant of Alzheimer's disease.

Posterior cortical atrophy is a rare condition first described in 1988 involving progressive degeneration and atrophy of the occipital cortex, often recognized after an unexplained homonymous hemianopsia may be discovered. We report a case in association with Alzheimer's disease in a 77-year-old female, who underwent brain single-photon emission computed tomography as well brain positron emission tomography using Florbetapir to further evaluate progressive cognitive decline. The patient had also been followed in Ophthalmology for glaucoma, where a progressive unexplained change in her visual f

Attentional effects of gaze shifts are influenced by emotion and spatial frequency, but not in autism.

OBJECTIVE: Impaired gaze following is an important hallmark of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in clinical settings. Yet, ASD subjects perform normally on laboratory tasks involving gaze shifts. We investigated this contradiction, hypothesizing that impaired gaze following in ASDs is not related to basic impairments in attention orienting but to impaired emotion perception and abnormal processing of spatial frequencies (i.e., local and global information). METHOD: We tested 30 high-functioning, school-age children with ASDs and 30 age- and IQ-matched controls on a task involving gaze shifts

Delayed response to animate implied motion in human motion processing areas.

Viewing static photographs of objects in motion evokes higher fMRI activation in the human medial temporal complex (MT+) than looking at similar photographs without this implied motion. As MT+ is traditionally thought to be involved in motion perception (and not in form perception), this finding suggests feedback from object-recognition areas onto MT+. To investigate this hypothesis, we recorded extracranial potentials evoked by the sight of photographs of biological agents with and without implied motion. The difference in potential between responses to pictures with and without implied motio

Impact of visual impairment on measures of cognitive function for children with congenital toxoplasmosis: implications for compensatory intervention strategies.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this work was to determine whether visual impairment caused by toxoplasmic chorioretinitis is associated with impaired performance of specific tasks on standardized tests of cognitive function. If so, then we worked to determine whether there are patterns in these difficulties that provide a logical basis for development of measures of cognitive function independent of visual impairment and compensatory intervention strategies to facilitate learning for such children. METHODS: Sixty-four children with congenital toxoplasmosis with intelligence quotient scores > or =

Coupling of cerebral blood flow and oxygen consumption during physiological activation and deactivation measured with fMRI.

The physiological basis of the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) signal and its dependence on baseline cerebral blood flow (CBF) were investigated by comparing responses to a visual stimulus after physiological changes of the baseline. Eight human subjects were imaged with 3 and 4 T MRI scanners, and both BOLD signal and CBF were simultaneously measured. Subjects viewed a flickering radial checkerboard in a block design experiment, alternating between eyes open or closed during the off periods. Compared to a baseline state with eyes open in a darkened room, substantial deactivation (ave

A neuropsychological perspective on three schizophrenic patients with midline structural defects.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between midline structural defects and schizophrenia remains unclear, although a number of neuroradiological studies have reported an association between schizophrenia and a range of anomalies. METHOD: Three patients are reported, each diagnosed with schizophrenia and neuroradiological evidence of midline structural anomalies. MRI scans are reported in conjunction with performance over a range of neuropsychological tests designed to assess frontal and lateralised cognitive functions. RESULTS: Evidence of anterior dysfunction was present in all three cases, while

Knowing where and knowing what: a double dissociation.

We report a double dissociation between visuo-spatial abilities and semantic knowledge (knowledge of the names and attributes of objects and people), in two brain-injured people with longstanding stable impairments, using a wide range of tests to explore the extent of the dissociation, MU, who has bilateral lesions of occipito-parietal cortex, shows severe spatial disorientation with relatively well-preserved semantic knowledge. He is contrasted with JBR, who has bilateral temporal lobe damage and shows severe semantic problems and no impairment on visuo-spatial tasks. Our findings thus demons

Functional and Structural Impairments in the Perirhinal Cortex of a Mouse Model of CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder Are Rescued by a TrkB Agonist.

Cyclin-dependent kinase-like 5 (CDKL5) deficiency disorder (CDD) is a severe X-linked neurodevelopmental encephalopathy caused by mutations in the CDKL5 gene and characterized by early-onset epilepsy and intellectual and motor impairments. No cure is currently available for CDD patients, as limited knowledge of the pathology has hindered the development of therapeutics. Cdkl5 knockout (KO) mouse models, recently created to investigate the role of CDKL5 in the etiology of CDD, recapitulate various features of the disorder. Previous studies have shown alterations in synaptic plasticity and dendr

A behavioral evaluation of PCE exposure in patients and dry cleaners: a possible relationship between clinical and preclinical effects.

Long-term deficits in visuospatial function and memory and disturbances in mood have been clinically identified and followed in four patients occupationally exposed to perchloroethylene (PCE). A frontal/limbic hypothesis is offered as the site of pathology. A separate study among 65 dry cleaners was conducted to provide similar evidence of impairment, suggesting a continuum between clinical and preclinical effects. Three exposure zones were identified for the counter clerks, pressers, and operators corresponding to air levels of 11.2, 23.2, and 40.8 ppm. Decrements were found for visual reprod

On recognizing proper names: the orthographic cue hypothesis.

Five experiments investigated the recognition of proper names and common nouns using the lexical decision paradigm. In Experiments 1-3 the case of the initial letter of written stimuli was systematically varied. An advantage was consistently found for proper names written with the first letter in capital. Crucially, response times to proper names with the first letter in lowercase and to common nouns irrespective of the case of the first letter did not differ from each other. No difference between proper names and common nouns emerged in Experiment 4 where the stimuli were presented auditorily

Relational memory function in schizophrenia: Electrophysiological evidence for early perceptual and late associative abnormalities.

We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine encoding and retrieval during episodic memory in people with schizophrenia (SZ) and biological relatives of SZ (SZr). To isolate contextual from item-specific aspects of memory, we employed the Relational and Item-Specific Encoding (RISE) task. Twenty two healthy controls (HCs), 22 SZ, and 19 SZr, encoded visual depictions of objects when displayed alone (item-specific) or in pairs (relational encoding), and were later tested on recognition of specific objects and whether pairs of objects had appeared together. An early posterior component (P2

REM sleep and emotional face memory in typically-developing children and children with autism.

Relationship between REM sleep and memory was assessed in 13 neurotypical and 13 children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A neutral/positive/negative face recognition task was administered the evening before (learning and immediate recognition) and the morning after (delayed recognition) sleep. The number of rapid eye movements (REMs), beta and theta EEG activity over the visual areas were measured during REM sleep. Compared to neurotypical children, children with ASD showed more theta activity and longer reaction time (RT) for correct responses in delayed recognition of neutral faces.
