Brown adipose tissue thermogenesis contributes to emotional hyperthermia in a resident rat suddenly confronted with an intruder rat.

Body temperature increases when individuals experience salient, emotionally significant events. There is controversy concerning the contribution of nonshivering thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT) to emotional hyperthermia. In the present study we compared BAT, core body, and brain temperature, and tail blood flow, simultaneously measured, to determine whether BAT thermogenesis contributes to emotional hyperthermia in a resident Sprague-Dawley rat when an intruder rat, either freely-moving or confined to a small cage, is suddenly introduced into the cage of the resident rat for 30 min.

Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors effect on arterial stiffness and wave reflections: a meta-analysis and meta-regression of randomised controlled trials.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have assessed the effect of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) on arterial stiffness and wave reflections as measured by pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AIx), respectively. We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate this effect in comparison to placebo and to other antihypertensive agents. Additionally, we investigated this effect when ACEIs are combined with other antihypertensive agents and in comparison to a combination of antihypertensive agents. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL

Assessment of craniospinal pressure-volume indices.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The PVI(CC) of the craniospinal compartment defines the shape of the pressure-volume curve and determines the damping of cyclic arterial pulsations. Despite no reports of direct measurements of the PVI(CC) among healthy elderly, it is believed that a change away from adequate accommodation of cardiac-related pulsations may be a pathophysiologic mechanism seen in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer disease and idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. In this study, blood and CSF flow measurements are combined with lumbar CSF infusion measurements to assess the

New classification of aortic dissection during the cardiac cycle as pulsating type and static type evaluated by electrocardiogram-gated multislice CT.

PURPOSE: In some four-dimensional images acquired by electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated multislice computed tomography (MSCT) of thoracic aortic dissection (AD), true lumen (TL) gets larger (pulsating-type), whereas in others, TL and false lumen (FL) do not change (static-type) in a cardiac cycle. We have characterized these types. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty subjects (10 with a double-barrel type thoracic descending AD and 10-controls) were enrolled. MSCT covered the thorax, and reconstructed every 10% from 0-90% of the R-R interval. Two physicians measured the TL and FL areas of descending tho

Inflection point of ascending aortic waveform is a powerful predictor of restenosis after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty.

BACKGROUND: Although it was reported that the pulsatility of ascending aortic pressure is closely related to restenosis after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), it is not known whether the reflection period of ascending aortic pressure can predict restenosis after PTCA. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether reflection in the arterial system can be used to predict restenosis after PTCA. METHODS: We used the inflection point as the reflection period index and measured the coronary artery diameter, aortic pressure, and inflection time before PTCA. We defined the i

Senile dementia of Alzheimer type and multi-infarct dementia investigated by transcranial Doppler sonography.

Dementia of the Alzheimer type, senile onset (SDAT), and multi-infarct dementia (MID) exhibit differences in cerebrovascular blood flow velocity profiles, which were investigated by means of transcranial Doppler sonography. The pulsatility indices (PI), as angle-independent parameters of peripheral vascular resistance measured in the basal cerebral arteries, were significantly increased in MID patients with respect to SDAT cases. In an analysis of the correlations between several variables and the magnitude of PI, we found strong inverse correlations of the CAMCOG score, and strong direct corr

Aortic ejection fraction: a new hemodynamic parameter and its relationship to aortic insufficiency.

Pulsations of the ascending aorta during fluoroscopy in patients with aortic insufficiency (AI) have been described. The authors present their observations of a similar phenomenon in patients who have AI undergoing scintiangiography. In addition, this paper describes a technique to validate and quantitate this finding. They studied 17 patients with documented AI and 14 subjects of a control group. First-pass studies were acquired in the RAO 15 degrees projection. Regions of interest were placed over the proximal aorta during systole and diastole. An aortic ejection fraction (AF) was determined

Role of Characteristic Pulmonary Impedance With Exercise for Detection of Abnormal Pulmonary Vascular Response and Uncoupling in Pulmonary Hypertension Resulting From Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) resulting from heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (PH-HFpEF) can lead to right ventricular-pulmonary arterial (RV-PA) uncoupling despite normal steady hemodynamics (eg, pulmonary vascular resistance). Unsteady hemodynamics, quantified by characteristic pulmonary impedance (ZC), may be useful in differentiating those patients with PH-HFpEF who have sufficient coupling from those who have insufficient coupling. We hypothesized that abnormal pulsatile hemodynamics with exercise, quantified by ZC, could precisely detect abnormal cardiopulmonary f

Technical Advances Targeting Multiday Preservation of Isolated Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion.

Indications for ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) have evolved from assessment of questionable donor lungs to treatment of some pathologies and the logistics. Yet up to 3 quarters of donor lungs remain discarded across the globe. Multiday preservation of discarded human lungs on EVLP platforms would improve donor lung utilization rates via application of sophisticated treatment modalities, which could eventually result in zero waitlist mortality. The purpose of this article is to summarize advances made on the technical aspects of the protocols in achieving a stable multiday preservation of isolat

Case report: Diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary choristoma in a newborn calf.

A 4-day-old female Holstein calf presented with a large-sized, protruding mass in its back, at birth. Radiography identified the deformed spinous process in the second and third lumbar vertebras, suggesting spina bifida. Ultrasonography of the back mass revealed anechoic bronchi-like structures and large vessels with rich blood flow running parallel within the homogenous echogenic mass's parenchyma. Doppler ultrasonography also revealed pulsatile vessels entering into the deeper side of the transverse process of the lumbar vertebras at the right-sided base of the protruding mass. These imaging

[MEP-02] A Buerger's Patient with Brachial Artery Aneurysm.

Thromboangiitis obliterans (TAO) is a chronic, inflammatory and thrombotic vascular disease associated with tobacco use. This report described a TAO patient who underwent an aneurysmectomy due to a brachial artery aneurysm (BAA), which is not one of the classic findings of TAO and has no example in the literature. A 49-year-old male patient presented with swelling and pain in the right arm. In 2021, the patient was diagnosed with TAO. On physical examination, a pulsatile mass extending from the antecubital region was observed. Ultrasonography revealed aneurysmatic enlargement and mural thrombu

Chest Compressions in Pediatric Patients With Continuous-Flow Ventricular Assist Devices: Case Series and Proposed Algorithm.

Patients with continuous flow ventricular assist devices (CF-VAD's) in the systemic ventricle (left ventricle or single ventricle) often have no palpable pulses, unreliable pulse oximetry waveforms and non-pulsatile arterial waveforms despite hemodynamic stability. When circulatory decompensation occurs, standard indicators to begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) which are used in other pediatric patients (i.e., significant bradycardia or loss of pulse) cannot be applied in the same fashion. In this population, there may already be pulselessness and development of bradycardia in and of it

Surgical Management of Cirsoid Aneurysms of the Scalp: Ten Years' Experience.

OBJECTIVE: Cirsoid aneurysms are rare arteriovenous malformations of the scalp that present with disfigured pulsatile masses and may be associated with headache, bleeding, or tinnitus. These lesions are difficult to manage because of their complex vascular anatomy, high shunt flow, and cosmetic disfigurement; many options have been described to treat such lesions. We evaluate 10 years' experience in the surgical management of cirsoid aneurysms of the scalp. METHODS: This study included 15 patients with cirsoid aneurysm of the scalp, all of whom were treated with surgical excision only over 10

Treatment of lower limb ischaemia in patients with diabetes.

Diabetic chronic limb-threatening ischaemia is a challenging clinical problem with patients at high risk of diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) and limb loss. Patients often remain asymptomatic even in the presence of severe pedal ischaemia until first presenting with tissue loss such as DFU or frank gangrene. Limb salvage units should have the facilities and expertise to provide multidisciplinary team-based holistic care through best medical therapy, rapid diagnosis, prompt revascularisation with endovascular or open surgical techniques and expert wound management. Endovascular revascularisation h

Ruptured Aneurysm of an Aberrant Internal Carotid Artery Successfully Treated with Simultaneous Intervention and Surgery in a Hybrid Operating Room.

BACKGROUND: Aberrant internal carotid artery (aICA) is an anatomic anomaly whereby the internal carotid artery courses through the tympanic cavity without separation by bone. Because aICA is rare, there are no definite treatment strategies for aICA and its complications. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of aICA accompanied by pseudoaneurysm formation and massive bleeding. The patient was a 31-year-old woman with a 2-year history of hearing loss, ear fullness, and pulsatile tinnitus in her left ear. After a diagnosis of otitis media with effusion, she underwent a myringotomy and massive arte

Devices in the management of advanced, chronic heart failure.

Heart failure (HF) is a global phenomenon, and the overall incidence and prevalence of the condition are steadily increasing. Medical therapies have proven efficacious, but only a small number of pharmacological options are in development. When patients cease to respond adequately to optimal medical therapy, cardiac resynchronization therapy has been shown to improve symptoms, reduce hospitalizations, promote reverse remodelling, and decrease mortality. However, challenges remain in identifying the ideal recipients for this therapy. The field of mechanical circulatory support has seen immense

[Complex supraclavicular false aneurysm. Case report].

The authors report the clinical case of a 29 year-old caucasian male, previously healthy, victim of traffic accident with head and chest trauma, resulting in a prolonged stay (around 60 days) in an intensive care unit. After hospital discharge, the patient noticed a slow growing of a left supraclavicular pulsatile mass, associated with pain, both local and irradiating to the left arm. The diagnostic investigation revealed a complex false aneurysm with associated arterio-venous fistulae, dissecting cervical muscle planes and involving the braquial plexus. He was submitted to surgical interventi
