Chronic periaortitis (CP) is a rare autoimmune disease without effective treatment. By analyzing the serum bile acid spectrum in 28 CP patients with the ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, we found that the bile acids were significantly altered in CP patients, with significant increases in chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) and glycochenodeoxycholic acid (GCDCA) and decrease in deoxycholic acid (DCA). BACKGROUND: KSHV, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, is a necessary cofactor for the development of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). We have previously reported KSHV-related DNA sequences in retroperitoneal fibromatosis (RF) tissue from two species of macaque. The putative herpesvirus was called RFHV for RF-associated herpesvirus. Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA; formerly Wegener's) can present with clinical and histopathological features similar to those of immunoglobulin-G4 related disease (IgG4-RD), a recently described fibro-inflammatory condition. Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare form of histiocytosis of unknown origin characterized by tissue infiltration by lipid-laden histiocytes. Typically, the diaphyseal and metaphyseal portions of the tubular bones are affected, leading to a characteristic radiographic pattern of bone sclerosis. Orbital involvement is not infrequent and is manifested by exophthalmos and periorbital xanthomatous lesions, with associated visual problems. This case report documents imaging and pathologic findings in a patient with ECD with extensive orbital involvement.

INTRODUCTION: Erdheim-Chester disease is a very rare syndrome affecting adult population. It typically causes hyperostosis of long bones, retroperitoneal fibrosis and widening of the aortic wall.
