OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the presence of numbness and paresthesias among long-distance backpackers on the Appalachian Trail.
METHODS: Backpackers who hiked a minimum of 7 days were interviewed while hiking. Following their hike, a written questionnaire was mailed to the participants that explored the incidence of injuries and illnesses among hikers. Paresthesias were defined as either numbness or "phantom, burning, or shooting pains." A case-control analysis of risk factors for paresthesias was performed.

Here we examine the patterns of connections between the zona incerta (ZI) of the thalamus and the major visual centers of the rat brain, namely the retina, dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGd), superficial layers of the superior colliculus (SCs), and occipital cortex (Ocl). Injections of the tracers biotinylated dextran or cholera toxin subunit b were made into each of these centers, as well as ZI itself, by using stereotaxic coordinates. We have developed a novel breath sampling device suitable for capturing a portion of end-tidal air. This breath sample is then transferred onto a Perkin Elmer automated thermal desorption (ATD) sampling tube which is subsequently analysed by ATD-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS). The urinary tract is a common site for bacterial infection in childhood. The most important aspect of urinary tract infection in childhood is that it can lead to severe and progressive renal disease. Detailed evaluation of sensibility and function on 10 patients was carried out on an average of 42 months after thumb reconstruction by microsurgical free tissue transfer. Sensibility based on modified two-point discrimination and ridge criteria was found to be directly related to the patient's age at time of neurosuture. BACKGROUND: Conservative treatment or debridement is generally sufficient for Freiberg's disease grades I and II but operative intervention for the late stages of the disease process (III-V) is more challenging. Debridement alone is not sufficient and various forms of arthroplasty have been put forward. We have evaluated the outcomes of patients treated with an interpositional arthroplasty technique using a pedicle graft of periosteum and fat made into a "Rollmop" spacer for severe Freiberg's disease. Muscle weakness is considered a risk factor for ankle injury. Balance training and barefoot running have been used in an attempt to strengthen the muscles crossing the ankle. In 1981-89, 9 patients underwent reconstruction for complex injuries in the Achilles tendon region. 10 free microvascular flaps were used: 5 fasciocutaneous and 5 muscle or musculocutaneous flaps.
