[Diagnostic value of conventional roentgen image, computerized and magnetic resonance tomography in acute sprains of the foot. A prospective clinical study].

In order to gain satisfying results in the treatment of acute hyperflexion trauma to the foot, it is absolutely necessary to achieve an exact primary diagnosis because injuries to the tarsometatarsal joint are frequently missed primarily. Aim of this prospective clinical study was to evaluate the diagnostic reliability of conventional radiography, CT and MRI compared to each other. 75 consecutive patients after hyperflexion trauma to the foot were included. There were 47 males and 28 females with a mean age of 38 years. After admittance, pa-, lateral and 45 degrees oblique radiographs were tak

Magnetic resonance imaging of the normal and injured lateral collateral ligaments of the ankle.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To study the role of MR Imaging in evaluating both normal and injured lateral collateral ligaments of the ankle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients with clinically diagnosed inversion injury to the ankle and 20 healthy volunteers underwent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the ankle with special emphasis on the lateral complex ligaments. RESULTS: The anterior talofibular (ATFL) and posterior talofibular ligaments (PTFL) were identified in 100% of the ankles of normal volunteers in the axial plane. The PTFL was identified in 100% in the coronal plane. The calca

Simple arthrolysis for flexor rigidity of the proximal interphalangeal joint.

The authors report 19 cases of simple arthrolysis of the proximal interphalangeal joint for flexion rigidity. Their cases were limited to isolated lesions of the joint without any flexor or extensor tendon involvement. The technique is described, and the importance of postoperative physical therapy is stressed. The results in these cases, in contrast with those in complicated cases of rigidity, are very satisfactory. The etiology is primarily sprains and dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal articulation, immobilized for too long a time in flexion (in the so-called "functional position"

Occupational traumatic injuries among offshore seafood processors in Alaska, 2010-2015.

INTRODUCTION: The U.S. Coast Guard and Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration have identified the Alaskan offshore seafood processing industry as high-risk. This study used Coast Guard injury reports to describe patterns of traumatic injury among offshore seafood processors, as well as identify modifiable hazards. METHODS: From the reports, we manually reviewed and abstracted information on the incident circumstances, injury characteristics and circumstances, and vessel. Traumatic injury cases were coded using the Occupational Injury and Illness Classification System, and a Wor

Descriptive Epidemiology of Injuries Sustained in National Collegiate Athletic Association Men's and Women's Lacrosse, 2004-2005 Through 2013-2014 Seasons.

Background: Men's and women's lacrosse operate with significantly different rules, equipment, and contact. Previous studies have assessed injury rates (IRs) in either men's or women's lacrosse, but a few studies have compared injury patterns in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men's and women's lacrosse. Purpose: We sought to examine whether there were differences in injury type, mechanism, setting, and time loss in men and women playing lacrosse in the NCAA. Methods: We performed a retrospective case-control study using data collected by the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program

Prevalence of Foot Diseases and Injuries and Their Associations with Demographic and Health-Related Factors Among Umrah Pilgrims in 2024 G (1445 H).

Background: Foot injuries are common among Umrah pilgrims due to prolonged walking, overcrowded conditions, and inadequate preventive measures, such as inappropriate footwear or walking barefoot. Despite their potential impact on mobility and overall pilgrimage experience, these conditions remain underreported and insufficiently addressed in public health strategies. Objectives: This study aims to assess the prevalence and types of foot problems among Umrah pilgrims, examine their associations with demographic characteristics and comorbidities, analyze the utilization of medical attention for

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, and Mixed Martial Arts Injuries Presenting to United States Emergency Departments, 2008-2015.

Limited research has systematically examined injuries resulting from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Judo, and mixed martial arts (MMA), especially when compared to more well-known or -established martial arts. These three combative sports differ substantially regarding their rules and techniques. BJJ emphasizes ground positioning and submission, Judo rewards throwing an opponent on their back with submission ending the match, and MMA emphasizes knocking out or forcing the submission of one's opponent. We examined injuries, among people of any age, experienced from participation in BJJ, Judo, and M

Epidemiology of cheerleading injuries presenting to NEISS hospitals from 2002 to 2007.

BACKGROUND: Cheerleading has developed into a complex sport utilizing aspects of dance, gymnastics/tumbling, single- and multiple-partner stunts, and tosses in complex displays. Stunting and tosses elevates one or multiple participants into the air supported by teammates putting all at significant injury risk. METHODS: We reviewed all cheerleading injuries captured by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission National Electronic Injury Surveillance System from 2002 to 2007 that presented to US Emergency Departments and used the new narrative feature added in 2002 to better differentiate injur

The Burden of Shoulder and Elbow Injuries in Wrestling: A Systematic Review of Incidence, Injury Types, and Competition-Level Comparisons.

CONTEXT: Wrestling is a physically demanding sport that places athletes at a high risk of musculoskeletal injuries, particularly to shoulder and elbow joints. OBJECTIVE: This study summarizes published data on shoulder and elbow injuries in wrestling, determines their burden, and reports weighted average injury rates (wIRs). DATA SOURCES: Databases searched included PubMed, Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library, and SPORTDiscus. STUDY SELECTION: Full-text studies in English evaluating shoulder or elbow injuries in competitive wrestlers with reported injury data specific to wrestlers, as well as

Female high school soccer injuries presenting to US emergency departments: A 10-year analysis of national injury data.

BACKGROUND: Female athletes are underrepresented in sports injury research, especially regarding soccer-related injury patterns in adolescent females. This study analyzes injury trends among high school-aged female soccer players to address injury risks in this population. We hypothesize that soccer-related injuries in high school-aged females most commonly involve the head or lower extremities, with incidence decreasing over time due to improved prevention measures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was queried for soccer-related injuries in fe

Demographic trends of school-based musculoskeletal injuries between 2019 and 2023: An epidemiological and risk analysis.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal injuries occur in various school-based settings. However, no information describes musculoskeletal injury risk in school-aged populations relative to age, race, season, body part, and injury classification. We sought to perform an epidemiological analysis and create estimated multinomial logistic regression (MLR) models to profile school-based musculoskeletal injuries seen and treated at United States emergency departments from 2019 through 2023.
