OBJECTIVE: In the anterior regions, the resorption of the buccal bone after tooth extraction leads to a contraction of the overlying soft tissues, resulting in an esthetic problem, particularly with immediate implant placement. In the socket shield technique, the buccal root section of the tooth is maintained, to preserve the buccal bone for immediate implant placement. The aim of this prospective study was to investigate the survival, stability, and complication rates of implants placed using a "modified" socket shield technique.
METHODS: Over a 2-year period, all patients referred to a dent

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the surgical precision of coronectomy for mandibular third molars (M3Ms) performed with the aid of a dynamic navigation system (DNS) versus the conventional freehand technique.
METHODS: A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted in 110 patients undergoing M3M coronectomy. After withdrawal of three patients, 107 patients (teeth, N = 117) were included in the final analysis. Teeth were randomly allocated to the DNS-assisted group (patients, n = 52; teeth, N = 57) or the freehand group (patients, n = 55; teeth, N = 60). The prima

As advances have progressed in implant dentistry, patient acceptance and long-term success rates have been on the rise. With technology ever improving, clinicians have taken treatment approaches that are aimed at a more immediate timetable as well as esthetics. The immediate implant placement and provisionalization protocol is now being applied to the anterior region. With esthetic concerns being at the forefront of implant dentistry, this case report highlights the importance of five key parameters that are related to the risk of recession following dental implant restoration in maxillary ant

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine whether Angle Class II subdivision malocclusions have skeletal or dental asymmetries between the Class II and Class I sides.
METHODS: A sample of 54 untreated Angle Class II subdivision patients with pretreatment photos and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans was used. The photos were used to identify the Class II subdivision malocclusion and to record the amount of crowding per quadrant. Landmarks were plotted on each CBCT volume so that direct 3-dimensional measurements could be made to compare the positions and dimensions of t

AIM: To compare mean cusp movement in molar teeth with endodontic access and mesial-occlusal-distal (MOD) cavities before and after restoration with several fibre-reinforced composite restoration techniques under loading and to evaluate the effect of restoration technique on fracture strength.
METHODOLOGY: Reference points were marked at the mesial cusp ridges of extracted human mandibular molar teeth. Digital images were taken under loading (300 N) using a stereomicroscope (Leica MZ16A; Wetzlar, Germany). Three-dimensional (3D) distances between the reference points were recorded (Leica, Ste

BACKGROUND: The formation of enamel occurs across multiple developmental stages and is highly sensitive to disruptions in cellular signaling. Perinatal complications, preterm birth, and exposure to environmental chemicals are systemic factors known to contribute to developmental defects of enamel (DDE). These defects adversely affect normal oral physiological function and impact patients’ daily lives. The precise pathophysiology of DDE, however, remains unclear, complicating efforts at prevention. Consequently, elucidating the mechanisms through which environmental exposures lead to DDE is ess

BACKGROUND: Abrasive agents in toothpaste play a crucial role in plaque removal and stain reduction; however, excessive abrasivity may compromise enamel integrity. Zirconium oxide has recently been proposed as a polishing additive, but its optimal concentration remains unclear. This in vitro study aimed to identify the optimal concentration of zirconium oxide particles in toothpaste for effective cleaning through abrasion of natural dental tissues. The study evaluated enamel substance loss (wear) and surface alteration (roughness) across different zirconium oxide concentrations, highlighting b

Mandibular incisor extraction therapy has been used as a treatment option since the early 1900s to relieve tooth size-arch length discrepancies in the anterior segment of the mandible. The advantages of this therapy include potential reduction in treatment time, possibility of achieving better long-term stability in the mandibular anterior segment since inter canine width is not increased and maintenance of the soft-tissue profile because retraction of the mandibular incisors is less compared with mandibular premolar extractions These advantages are counterbalanced, however, by some potential

Routine dental procedures can expose dental providers to aerosols associated with potential acute or chronic respiratory health effects. High-volume suction (HVS) systems can potentially mitigate aerosols generated during routine dental procedures; however, few studies to date have evaluated HVS systems' aerosol exposure mitigation efficiency during procedures with patients. This study reports the aerosol mitigation efficiency of 5 commercially available HVS systems [standard high-volume evacuation (HVE), 3 intraoral HVS systems (Systems A-C), and 1 modified HVE (System D)] when used during de

BACKGROUND: Dental implantation has emerged as the predominant approach for the replacement of missing teeth. Nevertheless, the resorption of alveolar bone occurs progressively following tooth loss, leading to varying perspectives regarding the application of bone augmentation techniques for standard-length implants versus the direct utilization of shorter implants. This study employs finite element analysis (FEA) to assess a typical Bicon short implant system, with the objective of determining the most effective implant for the posterior mandibular region with type II bone.

BACKGROUND: Smile esthetics have been shown to play a major role in the perception of whether a person is attractive, and whether they are perceived as friendly, trustworthy, intelligent, and self-confident. A proposed major determinant of the esthetics of a smile is the amount of gingival display, which can be excessive in cases of altered passive eruption. The aim of this study is to see whether altering the amount of gingival display of patients would affect dental professionals' and laypersons' perceptions of the aforementioned social parameters.

PURPOSE: Impacted maxillary canines occur in up to 3% of the population and their eruption is of great importance in establishing, maintaining the shape, aesthetics, and function of the dental arch. Hence, surgical exposure of canines for the purpose of aligning them is a common surgical procedure. This study identifies the frequency and the statistically significant factors associated with successful surgical exposure of impacted maxillary canines and the relative risk factors for repeat surgery.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of 182 patients who underwent surgical exposure of

The aim of this paper is to document additional cases to an unconventional protocol published in 2009. In 9 patients, sites rendered edentulous by the presence of an impacted maxillary canine were treated with 12 implants placed through the impacted canines. In another patient, 3 implants were inserted in the mandible to rehabilitate a failing bridge. Implants were placed encroaching upon either the root or the crown. No postoperative pain was reported. Healing was uneventful in all but one patient; the latter underwent soft tissue infection 2 weeks after implant placement and was successfully

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have found ankylosis occurs as a part of the inflammatory process of aseptic root resorption initiated in a rat model. The physiologic mechanisms behind the development of dentoalveolar ankylosis and healing response are still unclear. While receptor activator of nuclear factor-κβ ligand (RANKL), receptor activator of nuclear factor-κβ (RANK) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) have gained momentum in the understanding of resorption, no study to date has investigated their role in dentoalveolar ankylosis.
AIMS: The aims of this study were to investigate if, and when, anky
