Vascular cognitive disorders: memory, mental speed and cognitive flexibility after stroke.

This study investigated the occurrence of cognitive disorders 1 and 6 months after stroke in a cohort of patients with a first-ever stroke. In addition, it was investigated whether age, sex and level of education are risk factors for vascular cognitive disorders. Memory, simple speed, cognitive flexibility and overall cognitive functioning were examined in 139 patients at 1 and 6 months post-stroke. Inclusion criteria on admission were first cerebral stroke, age>/=40, no other neurological or psychiatric disorders and ability to communicate. Mean age was 69.3 years (S.D.=12.3). Patients were c

Material-specific memory changes after anterior temporal lobectomy as predicted by the intracarotid amobarbital test.

PURPOSE: The intracarotid amobarbital test (IAT) has been shown to predict verbal memory changes after anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL). Seeking to extend these findings, we examined two questions: (a) What is the relationship between material-specific aspects of IAT memory and material-specific memory changes after ATL? and (b) Which IAT memory score(s) optimally predict memory changes after surgery, the memory score after injection ipsilateral to the seizure focus, the memory score after injection contralateral to the seizure focus, or the IAT asymmetry score, comprising the ipsilateral min

A neuropsychological outcome study of a child's left pericallosal arteriovenous malformation with occult fornix lesion.

Pericallosal arteriovenous malformations are rarely reported, particularly in children. Moreover, few arteriovenous malformation studies report thorough neuropsychological outcome data for assessing post-surgical functioning. This case report provides a longitudinal study of a boy who initially presented for neuropsychological testing at the age of 8 years and 1 month, following polyvinyl alcohol embolization, two craniotomies and resections and stereotactic radiosurgery for a pericallosal arteriovenous malformation involving nearly all of the corpus callosum. Follow-up magnetic resonance imag

Anterior temporal lobectomy, hippocampal sclerosis, and memory: recent neuropsychological findings.

Anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) is an effective and increasingly utilized treatment for nonlesional, intractable mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. However, this surgery results in domain-specific neuropsychological morbidity for a subset of patients. Within the past decade, multidisciplinary studies have revealed that left ATL patients without significant sclerosis in the resected hippocampus are most at risk for a substantial postacute decline in the ability to encode new verbal information. These patients are also at risk for a significant decrement in confrontation naming and other retrieval

Deficit to stimulus-centered, letter shape representations in a case of "unilateral neglect".

A brain-damaged subject is described whose pattern of performance in various reading tasks can be explained by proposing damage at a level of the word recognition process in which a representation with stimulus-centered, rather than retinal- or word-centered, coordinates is processed. Analysis of her reading performance as a function of topographical arrangement of letters, position of errors in the letter string, and the effects of letter spacing and of adding a prefix or suffix provide evidence not only for the existence of this level of representation (the letter-shape map in a model propos

Perception of visual letter strings in a case of left neglect: manipulation of the word form.

Patients with lesions in the right parietal lobe neglect the left side of nonwords much more than the left side of words. This has been interpreted in terms of a more automatic process in reading words. The case of a patient with left visual neglect after a vascular right parietooccipital lesion is presented. He showed the phenomenon of a word superiority effect over nonword in reading at the beginning in a clinical test with static cards; 6 months later, after some recovery, the same phenomenon could be demonstrated only with tachistoscopic presentation, and it occurred even inside the good r

Are Head Start effects sustained? A longitudinal follow-up comparison of disadvantaged children attending Head Start, no preschool, and other preschool programs.

This study investigates the sustained effects into kindergarten and grade 1 of Project Head Start for disadvantaged black children. Participation in generic Head Start programs was compared to both no preschool and other preschool experience for disadvantaged children in two American cities in 1969-1970. Incorporating both pretest/posttest and comparison group information, the study has advantages over other Head Start impact studies. Both preprogram background and cognitive differences were controlled in a covariance analysis design, using dependent measures in the cognitive, verbal, and soci

Facial expression perception correlates with verbal working memory function in schizophrenia.

AIMS: Facial emotion perception is considered to provide a measure of social cognition. Numerous studies have examined the perception of emotion in patients with schizophrenia, and the majority has reported impaired ability to recognize facial emotion perception. We aimed to investigate the correlation between facial expression recognition and other domains of social cognition and neurocognition in Japanese patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: Participants were 52 patients with schizophrenia and 53 normal controls with no history of psychiatric diseases. All participants completed the Hintin

Brain connectivity during verbal working memory in children and adolescents.

Working memory (WkM) is a fundamental cognitive process that serves as a building block for higher order cognitive functions. While studies have shown that children and adolescents utilize similar brain regions during verbal WkM, there have been few studies that evaluate the developmental differences in brain connectivity. Our goal was to study the development of brain connectivity related to verbal WkM in typically developing children and adolescents. Thirty-five healthy children and adolescents, divided into three groups: 9-12 (children), 13-16 (young adolescents), and 17-19 (older adolescen

Parental literacy predicts children's literacy: a longitudinal family-risk study.

This family-risk (FR) study examined whether the literacy skills of parents with dyslexia are predictive of the literacy skills of their offspring. We report data from 31 child-parent dyads where both had dyslexia (FR-D) and 68 dyads where the child did not have dyslexia (FR-ND). Findings supported the differences in liability of FR children with and without dyslexia: the parents of the FR-D children had more severe difficulties in pseudoword reading and spelling accuracy, in rapid word recognition, and in text reading fluency than the parents of the FR-ND children. Finally, parental skills we

Working memory deficit in dyslexia: behavioral and FMRI evidence.

Dyslexia is a condition characterized by difficulty of reading given adequate intelligence and educational opportunities, primarily associated with a phonological processing deficit. In this study we show that dyslexic children also show a deficit in working memory compared to a control group, measured with fMRI. A working memory n-back task with three load levels was used. Behavioral data showed that the dyslexics had poorer performance compared to the controls. fMRI data showed that the dyslexics had reduced activation in the prefrontal and parietal cortices and the cerebellum compared with

Rumination and impaired resource allocation in depression.

Depression is characterized by a range of cognitive deficits that theorists posit are due to the resource capturing properties of rumination. The present study was designed to examine the relation between rumination and resource allocation in depression. Twenty-five depressed and 25 nondepressed participants completed a modified dual-task version of the recency-probes task, which assesses the controlled allocation of cognitive resources by comparing performance across low- and high-interference conditions. In low-interference conditions, participants performed either the recency-probes task or

Backward inhibition in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease has been associated with executive dysfunction, especially task-switching deficits. One factor contributing to task-switching costs is backward inhibition, as measured by less efficient performance when switching back to a task from which one has recently switched away. This alternating-switch cost is considered to be due to persisting inhibition of elements of the previous task set after a switch. In this study, patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease and controls performed three tasks (A-C) in an intermixed fashion. Patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's di

Deficits in verbal declarative memory function in women with childhood sexual abuse-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

Several studies have shown deficits in verbal declarative memory function in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Most of these studies have been performed in men with combat-related PTSD compared with healthy subjects; relatively little is known about memory function in women with abuse-related PTSD, or whether these effects are specific to PTSD or are a nonspecific outcome of exposure to early abuse. The purpose of this study was to assess declarative memory function in women with and without a history of early childhood sexual abuse and PTSD. Forty-three women with and without a history of

Human psychopharmacology of hoasca, a plant hallucinogen used in ritual context in Brazil.

A multinational, collaborative, biomedical investigation of the effects of hoasca (ayahuasca), a potent concoction of plant hallucinogens, was conducted in the Brazilian Amazon during the summer of 1993. This report describes the psychological assessment of 15 long-term members of a syncretic church that utilizes hoasca as a legal, psychoactive sacrament as well as 15 matched controls with no prior history of hoasca ingestion. Measures administered to both groups included structured psychiatric diagnostic interviews, personality testing, and neuropsychological evaluation. Phenomenological asse
