Does a microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knee affect stair ascent strategies in persons with transfemoral amputation?

BACKGROUND: Stair ascent can be difficult for individuals with transfemoral amputation because of the loss of knee function. Most individuals with transfemoral amputation use either a step-to-step (nonreciprocal, advancing one stair at a time) or skip-step strategy (nonreciprocal, advancing two stairs at a time), rather than a step-over-step (reciprocal) strategy, because step-to-step and skip-step allow the leading intact limb to do the majority of work. A new microprocessor-controlled knee (Ottobock X2(®)) uses flexion/extension resistance to allow step-over-step stair ascent. QUESTIONS/PUR

Some musculo-skeletal sequelae in cancer survivors.

This paper deals with some of the musculo-skeletal complication that can occur after cancer treatment. In particular, we focus on Cancer Treatment Induced Bone Loss (CTIBL) and the musculo-skeletal complications that can occur in patients treated for extremity sarcoma. In addition we discuss peripheral neuropathy, musculo-skeletal pain and briefly mention some of the complications related to radiotherapy. CTIBL is mostly studied in breast cancer and prostate cancer survivors. The cause in these groups is mainly due to treatment induced hypogonadism. Other causes of CTIBL are indirect or direct

Gait biomechanics of individuals with transtibial amputation: effect of suspension system.

Prosthetic suspension system is an important component of lower limb prostheses. Suspension efficiency can be best evaluated during one of the vital activities of daily living, i.e. walking. A new magnetic prosthetic suspension system has been developed, but its effects on gait biomechanics have not been studied. This study aimed to explore the effect of suspension type on kinetic and kinematic gait parameters during level walking with the new suspension system as well as two other commonly used systems (the Seal-In and pin/lock). Thirteen persons with transtibial amputation participated in th

Myoelectric control of a computer animated hand: a new concept based on the combined use of a tree-structured artificial neural network and a data glove.

This paper proposes a new learning set-up in the field of control systems for multifunctional hand prostheses. Two male subjects with a traumatic one-hand amputation performed simultaneous symmetric movements with the healthy and the phantom hand. A data glove on the healthy hand was used as a reference to train the system to perform natural movements. Instead of a physical prosthesis with limited degrees of freedom, a virtual (computer-animated) hand was used as the target tool. Both subjects successfully performed seven different motoric actions with the fingers and wrist. To reduce the trai

[Polytraumatized burn injury victims].

Most polytraumatized burn injury persons aged 30-40 years who have suffered a burn or a burn-like injury are stigmatized by serious functional deficits, temporary loss of their social independence, injury-associated psychological reactions of different levels, and unusual reversible deficits in their higher cortical functions. The result is a prolonged stage of acute treatment and rehabilitation as well as very often the lifelong need for highly specialized care by physicians and other medical professionals. Accordingly, the deficits in any individual case are high and in spite of the low case

Interventions for motor rehabilitation in people with transtibial amputation due to peripheral arterial disease or diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Amputation is described as the removal of an external part of the body by trauma, medical illness or surgery. Amputations caused by vascular diseases (dysvascular amputations) are increasingly frequent, commonly due to peripheral arterial disease (PAD), associated with an ageing population, and increased incidence of diabetes and atherosclerotic disease. Interventions for motor rehabilitation might work as a precursor to enhance the rehabilitation process and prosthetic use. Effective rehabilitation can improve mobility, allow people to take up activities again with minimum functio
