Implicit sequence learning in juvenile anorexia nervosa: neural mechanisms and the impact of starvation.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that cognitive deficits occur in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and that these deficits may represent a predisposition towards developing AN or perpetuate the disorder. Specifically, dysfunctional implicit learning may contribute to the development of highly resistant dieting behaviours that are fundamental to the persistence of the disorder. Thus, the aims of this study were (a) to investigate implicit sequence learning in adolescent patients with AN before and after weight recovery and (b) to elucidate the associated neural mechanisms in acute

Executive Functioning in Subtypes of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to evaluate executive functions (EF), such as inhibition, planning, working memory, and set shifting, in child … fference between the ADHD-I and ADHD-C groups in terms of inhibition, set shifting, verbal fluency, cognitive flexibility, and planning. The ADHD-Comorbid group displayed more severe impairments in EF measures than the ADHD-C group; however, the severity was not statistically significant. EF performances of children in the control group were similar to children in the …

Detecting the subtle shape differences in hemodynamic responses at the group level.

The nature of the hemodynamic response (HDR) is still not fully understood due to the multifaceted processes involved. Aside from the overall amplitude, the response may vary across cognitive states, tasks, brain regions, and subjects with respect to characteristics such as rise and fall speed, peak duration, undershoot shape, and overall duration. Here we demonstrate that the fixed-shape (FSM) or adjusted-shape (ASM) methods may fail to detect some shape subtleties (e.g., speed of rise or recovery, or undershoot). In contrast, the estimated-shape method (ESM) through multiple basis functions

Can exposure and acceptance strategies improve functioning and life satisfaction in people with chronic pain and whiplash-associated disorders (WAD)? A randomized controlled trial.

Although 14% to 42% of people with whiplash injuries end up with chronic debilitating pain, there is still a paucity of empirically supported treatments for this group of patients. In chronic pain management, there is increasing consensus regarding the importance of a behavioural medicine approach to symptoms and disability. Cognitive behaviour therapy has proven to be beneficial in the treatment of chronic pain. An approach that promotes acceptance of, or willingness to experience, pain and other associated negative private events (e.g. fear, anxiety, and fatigue) instead of reducing or contr

Diagnostic Utility of Multi-Domain Language Measures Across the Alzheimer Disease Continuum.

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) progresses from a cognitively unimpaired stage through mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia. Bec … alized tests reached it only for DAT vs. HC, or not at all. In a post hoc regression, adjusting for cognitive flexibility and working memory attenuated group differences; the DAT difference was no longer significant, whereas the MCI difference remained significant. DISCUSSION: Semantic fluency was the strongest single language marker across the AD continuum. Among spe …

Abnormal Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex following Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Placental Insufficiency in a Preclinical Model.

INTRODUCTION: The combination of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and placental insufficiency (PI) places infants at an increased risk for preterm birth and may worsen brain injury and neurobehavioral outcomes. In this preclinical study, the effect of PAE + PI on lateral, medial, and ventral prefrontal cortex (PFC), striatum and corpus callosum microstructure were investigated using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). These brain regions are important for executive and higher cognitive functions, like cognitive flexibility. METHODS: Pregnant Long-Evans rat dams voluntarily drank 5% ethanol in sacc…

Evaluating the Impact of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Neurofeedback on Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Case Report.

A 38-year-old male patient sustained a concussion in May 2017 while playing hockey. Despite initially following standard treatments and rest, he continued to experience post-concussive symptoms. Approximately two weeks later, he sought alternative therapy at The Oxford Center in Brighton, Michigan, where he was introduced to hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Although a 40-session protocol was recommended, he ended treatment after 11 sessions, noting subjective improvements but later recognizing that discontinuing early may have hindered full recovery. Over time, the patient's medical history,

Magnetoreception, flexible use of cues and low-information navigation in animals.

Magnetoreception - the ability to detect Earth's magnetic field - is widespread among animals. Despite recent progress, fundamental gaps in our knowledge remain. The two main goals of modern magnetoreception research are to: (1) understand how magnetic information is used by animals in navigation; and (2) uncover the biophysical mechanisms that underlie magnetic field detection. The discovery that animals use magnetic information not only as a directional (compass) cue, but also as a kind of 'map', has revolutionized research in animal navigation. Recent findings suggest that animals use magne

Fecal microbiota transplantation in liver diseases: Therapeutic potential and associated risks.

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a biologically coherent strategy to modulate the gut-liver axis by restoring ecosystem structure and function. This chapter synthesizes current evidence and practice of FMT in various liver disease conditions. In cirrhosis with recurrent hepatic encephalopathy (HE), randomized trials demonstrate adjunctive benefits of FMT, reducing recurrence and hospitalizations as well as improving cognition, with route flexibility (lower-GI infusions or oral capsules) and emerging microbiome predictors of response. In severe alcohol-associated hepatitis and ACLF, ea

Regional variability in the associations between social and health-related risk factors and memory across Europe.

Interventions targeting social and health-related risk factors are thought to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older age. Despite well-known social, economic, and cultural differences across European countries, little is known about how these factors influence associations with memory function in different geographical contexts. This study examined the relationship between five social and health-related risk factors, namely living alone, physical inactivity, obesity, depression, and cardiometabolic and cardiovascular conditions, and memory function across Europe. Data came

The Management of Evolving Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in a Female with Fragile X Syndrome: A Case Report.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by cognitive impairment, behavioral dysregulation, and emotional lability. While it is primarily known as a leading cause of inherited intellectual disability, patients with FXS may also present with complex neuropsychiatric symptoms including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, autistic features, irritability, and self-injurious behaviors as they progress through childhood and adolescence. As such, these patients require close monitoring and routine adjustment of behavioral and pharmacologic

An AI-first framework for multimodal data in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Advancing the understanding and management of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias requires integrating and analyzing diverse data modalities. Traditional diagnostic tools, like neuroimaging, provide valuable insights but are limited by accessibility and infrastructure demands. Meanwhile, emerging modalities, including wearable sensors and speech analysis, enable less invasive and more continuous data collection but introduce challenges related to standardization and privacy. The coexistence of these heterogeneous data streams complicates multimodal integration across cohorts, populations

Exposure and Response Prevention in OCD: A Framework to Capitalize Change.

Exposure and response prevention (ERP) constitutes the first-line treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Despite robust empirical evidence supporting its efficacy, ERP has challenges, including high attrition rates and difficulty sustaining engagement. Research suggests that focusing on clients' strengths while addressing their difficulties can enhance therapy effectiveness. The present article details the case of a young adult with OCD characterized by sexual obsessions and mental compulsions, who initially underwent 12 sessions of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with limited p

Overground gait transitions are not sharp but involve gradually changing walk-run mixtures even over long distances.

Humans typically walk at low speeds and run at higher speeds. Previous studies of transitions between walking and running were mostly on treadmills, but real-world locomotion allows more flexibility. Here, we study overground locomotion over long distances (800 or 2400 m) under time constraints, simulating everyday scenarios like traveling to an appointment. Unlike on treadmills, participants can vary both speed and gait during this task. Gait transition in this overground task occurs over a broad 'gait transition regime' spanning average speeds from 1.9 to 3.0 m s-1. In this regime, people us

Managing interactional breakdowns with children with ASD: Therapists' practices when directives face challenges in therapeutic interactions.

Effective interventions to promote language competence, cognitive abilities and integrate these skills into daily activities for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often involve providing guidance and training through specific tasks, typically delivered by speech and language therapists through directive interactions. However, engaging children with ASD in such activities is not straightforward and often fraught with challenges. Yet we know very little about how practitioners cope when the interaction breaks down, for example, due to misunderstandings or failures to engage. This stud

"I love it…I love that story": The perspectives of children with Down syndrome and their mothers on reading experiences at home.

PURPOSE: Home literacy practices play an important role in shaping the reading development of children with Down syndrome. However, the majority of research to date has been quantitative in nature, and very little has included children's own perspectives and experiences. This study aimed to provide new research insights into the home literacy practices and reading experiences of children with Down syndrome, from the perspective of the children and their parents. METHODS: There were 19 participants from ten families: ten mothers participated in semi-structured interviews, exploring their views
