Bluetongue virus in pregnant elk and their calves.

Two pregnant North American elk (Cervus canadensis), in the 3rd and 4th months of gestation, were inoculated with bluetongue (BT) virus (BTV) serotype 11. The virus was not isolated from the blood of the cows beyond postinoculation day (PID) 8, but was isolated from bone marrow and spleen samples obtained at necropsy on PID 190. Although neither cow had overt clinical signs of BT infection, fluctuations in specific neutralizing BTV antibody titers indicated viral replication. However, in 2 attempts, BTV was not recovered biologically via bites of colonized Culicoides variipennis (biting gnats)

DNA metabarcoding on roadkill stomach contents reveals the breadth of species present in bobcat diets.

Trophic dynamics can be altered in complex ways as a result of urbanization. Understanding predator diets in these contexts may not only pro … st remaining taxa were other small mammals. Nearly a third of the bobcats had consumed white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Stomach contents containing cottontail remains were sequenced at an additional species-specific marker, but no samples containing the New England cottontail were identified. Detection of Ehrlichia canis in Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Dermacentor marginatus from sylvatic environments in Southern Italy.

Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) represent an increasing threat to both human and animal health, driven by the expanding distribution and abundan … E. canis DNA was also detected in 2.61% of Dermacentor marginatus collected from wild boars and roe deer, whereas Ixodes ricinus specimens tested negative. These findings suggest that D. marginatus may be involved in the local circulation of E. canis or possibly reflect pathogen acquisition during earlier developmental stages or co-feeding on other inf …

Genomic diversity and novel sequence types of Pasteurella multocida from diverse animal hosts in Connecticut, United States, 2022-2023.

Pasteurella multocida is a zoonotic pathogen infecting a wide range of domestic and wild animals. Although genomic data are available for several domestic hosts, isolates from wildlife remain underrepresented. Here, we performed whole-genome sequencing of nine P. multocida isolates recovered in Connecticut between 2022 and 2023 from cows, a deer, a rabbit, a cat, and a pheasant to characterize their genetic features and enhance our understanding of the host-associated diversity. All isolates except one feline strain shared a common genotype across multiple host species, being classified as cap…

Anaplasma phagocytophilum ecotype distribution and zoonotic potential in questing and feeding Ixodes ricinus from Germany.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a genetically diverse tick-borne pathogen, subdivided into different phylogenetic clusters, so-called ecotypes, with distinct transmission cycles. European variants pathogenic for humans, dogs, cats and horses are transmitted by Ixodes ricinus and belong to a distinct subgroup within Ecotype I. Ecotype II is also transmitted by I. ricinus, but considered primarily adapted to roe deer. The present study investigated the A. phagocytophilum ecotype distribution in questing and feeding I. ricinus from Germany, based on sequence analysis of the partial groEL gene. Of 94…

Antler base (Cervus nippon Temminck) peptides modulate the NLRP3 inflammatory pyroptosis and Nrf2/HO-1/NQO1 signaling pathways to ameliorate osteoarthritis: a structural and mechanistic study.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Antler base (Cervus nippon Temminck), a traditional Chinese medicine, is categorized as deer antler. Antler base extracts can delay osteoarthritis (OA); however, the underlying molecular pathways and effective substances remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: to clarify the potential mechanism of action and effective substance structure of Cervus nippon Temminck antler base peptides (CNCPs) in improving OA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The physicochemical properties, including functional groups, amino acid composition, and molecular weight of CNCPs were characterized usi…

Congeneric Rodents Differ in Immune Gene Expression: Implications for Host Competence for Tick-Borne Pathogens.

Mice in the genus Peromyscus are abundant and geographically widespread in North America, serving as reservoirs for zoonotic pathogens, including Borrelia burgdorferi (B. burgdorferi), the causative agent of Lyme disease, transmitted by Ixodes scapularis ticks. While the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus (P. leucopus)) is the primary reservoir in the United States, the deer mouse (P. maniculatus), an ecologically similar congener, rarely transmits the pathogen to biting ticks. Understanding the factors that allow these similar species to serve as a poor and competent reservoir is critica…

Features of Consistent Powassan Virus Lineage II Focus in Southern Maine, United States.

Powassan virus lineage II or deer tick virus (DTV) is a rare but increasingly reported human infection in the United States transmitted by Ixodes scapularis ticks. The virus is thought to be maintained in environmental foci that are optimal for tick and vertebrate reservoirs, but details on DTV ecology are poorly understood. We investigated DTV tick infection rates and reservoir host abundance in a focus of consistent DTV activity in Maine, USA. Host and tick abundance, vegetation, and microclimate conditions were measured in three forest sites representing increasing invasive understory infes…

Cascading impacts of overstory structure in managed forests on understory structure, microclimate conditions, and Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) densities.

There was no relationship between the number of trees or basal area per hectare and daily deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmermann) activity or nymphal infection prevalence. These findings provide a deeper understanding of tick-habitat associations within a forest stand and have the potential to inform forest management decisions.

Use of a Novel Detection Tool to Survey Orthohantaviruses in Wild-Caught Rodent Populations.

Orthohantaviruses are negative-stranded RNA viruses with trisegmented genomes that can cause severe disease in humans and are carried by sev … PS with a fatality rate of ~36%. Pathological changes, distribution and detection of Brucella melitensis in foetuses of experimentally-infected does.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis of goats is caused by Brucella melitensis. It is a re-emerging zoonotic disease in many countries due to transmission from domestic animals and wildlife such as ibex, deer and wild buffaloes. OBJECTIVE: To describe the pathological changes, identification and distribution of B. melitensis in foetuses of experimentally infected does. METHODS: Twelve female goats of approximately 90 days pregnant were divided into 4 groups. Group 1 was exposed intra-conjunctival to 100 µL of sterile PBS while goats of Groups 2, 3 and 4 were similarly exposed to 100 µL of an inoculum con…
