Non-parametric bootstrapping method for measuring the temporal discrimination threshold for movement disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have proposed that the temporal discrimination threshold (TDT), the shortest detectable time period between two stimuli, is a possible endophenotype for adult onset idiopathic isolated focal dystonia (AOIFD). Patients with AOIFD, the third most common movement disorder, and their first-degree relatives have been shown to have abnormal visual and tactile TDTs. For this reason it is important to fully characterize each participant's data. To date the TDT has only been reported as a single value. APPROACH: Here, we fit individual participant data with a cumulative Gauss

Crossmodal induction of thalamocortical potentiation leads to enhanced information processing in the auditory cortex.

Sensory systems do not work in isolation; instead, they show interactions that are specifically uncovered during sensory loss. To identify and characterize these interactions, we investigated whether visual deprivation leads to functional enhancement in primary auditory cortex (A1). We compared sound-evoked responses of A1 neurons in visually deprived animals to those from normally reared animals. Here, we show that visual deprivation leads to improved frequency selectivity as well as increased frequency and intensity discrimination performance of A1 neurons. Furthermore, we demonstrate in vit

An unavoidable modulation? Sensory attention and human primary motor cortex excitability.

The link between basic physiology and its modulation by cognitive states, such as attention, is poorly understood. A significant association becomes apparent when patients with movement disorders describe experiences with changing their attention focus and the fundamental effect that this has on their motor symptoms. Moreover, frequently used mental strategies for treating such patients, e.g. with task-specific dystonia, widely lack laboratory-based knowledge about physiological mechanisms. In this largely unexplored field, we looked at how the locus of attention, when it changed between inter

Stigmatizing attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS: validation of a measurement scale.

BACKGROUND: Although stigmatization has long been recognized as a major obstacle to HIV prevention. The lack of a valid and reliable measurement tool for stigmatization is a major gap in the research. This study aimed to: 1) develop a scale of stigmatizing attitudes towards people living with HIV (SAT-PLWHA-S) and 2) demonstrate its reliability and validity. METHODS: French and English-speaking experts (n = 21) from different professional communities (academics, practitioners) assessed the clarity and relevance of the proposed items. The psychometric properties of the SAT-PLWHA-S were assesse

Perceived racial, socioeconomic and gender discrimination and its impact on contraceptive choice.

BACKGROUND: The study was conducted to determine whether perceived racial, economic and gender discrimination has an impact on contraception use and choice of method. METHODS: We analyzed the first 2,500 women aged 14-45 years enrolled in the Contraceptive CHOICE Project, a prospective cohort study aimed to reduce barriers to obtaining long-acting reversible contraception. Items from the "Experiences of Discrimination" (EOD) scale measured experienced race-, gender- and economic-based discrimination. RESULTS: Overall, 57% of women reported a history of discrimination. Thirty-three percent re

Using computerized games to teach face recognition skills to children with autism spectrum disorder: the Let's Face It! program.

BACKGROUND: An emerging body of evidence indicates that relative to typically developing children, children with autism are selectively impaired in their ability to recognize facial identity. A critical question is whether face recognition skills can be enhanced through a direct training intervention. METHODS: In a randomized clinical trial, children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder were pre-screened with a battery of subtests (the Let's Face It! Skills battery) examining face and object processing abilities. Participants who were significantly impaired in their face processing abiliti

Binding 3-D object perception in the human visual cortex.

How do visual luminance, shape, motion, and depth bind together in the brain to represent the coherent percept of a 3-D object within hundreds of milliseconds (msec)? We provide evidence from simultaneous magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and electroencephalographic (EEG) data that perception of 3-D objects defined by luminance or motion elicits sequential activity in human visual cortices within 500 msec. Following activation of the primary visual cortex around 100 msec, 3-D objects elicited sequential activity with only little overlap (dynamic 3-D shapes: MT-LO-Temp; stationary 3-D shapes: LO-Te

Occasion setting by drug states: Functional equivalence following similar training history.

Three experiments examined whether a drug state serving as a positive feature for pairings between a discrete conditional stimulus (CS, 15-s light or 15-s noise) and sucrose could transfer facilitative control to a CS with which it had never been presented. To do so, a CS was paired with a sucrose reward in the nicotine (0.4 mg/kg), amphetamine (AMP, 1mg/kg), or chlordiazepoxide (CDP, 5mg/kg) drug state; in separate saline sessions the CS was presented but was not followed by any reward. All three drug states facilitated responding to a discrete CS; previous studies found that this facilitatio

Distinct information processing characteristics in dyslexia and ADHD during a covert orienting task: an event-related potential study.

OBJECTIVE: A visuo-spatial orienting task was used to investigate the individual and joint contribution of the presence of dyslexia and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to information processing. METHODS: Sixteen control, 17 dyslexic, 16 ADHD, and 15 comorbid adults performed the task, comprising a valid, invalid, and no-cue condition. Performance measures were errors and reaction time (RT). A negative potential in response to cues and targets (N2), and a positive potential in response to targets (P3) were derived from the EEG. A 2x2 design was used with the factors dyslexic/no

The role of medial prefrontal cortex in context-specific inhibition during reversal learning of a visual discrimination.

Rats with medial prefrontal cortex or sham lesions were trained on a visual discrimination task designed for the eight-arm radial maze. After reaching asymptotic performance on this task, both groups were divided into sub-groups that would experience reversal learning in the same or different context from original training. The results showed that both groups reversed in the different context had accelerated learning compared to the groups reversed in the same context. Reversal learning in rats with medial prefrontal cortex damage was faster than sham animals in the same context. These and oth

A practical measure of impairment: psychometric properties of the impairment rating scale in samples of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and two school-based samples.

Assessing impairment is an explicit component of current psychiatric diagnostic systems. A brief parent and teacher rating scale for assessing impairment was developed and studied using attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as an exemplar disorder. The psychometric properties of the Impairment Rating Scale (IRS) were measured in 4 samples. Two included ADHD and matched comparison children and the other 2 a school sample. Overall, IRS ratings exhibited very good temporal stability. They correlated with other impairment ratings and behavioral measures and displayed evidence of converge

Effects of modulators of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor-mediated neurotransmission on diazepam discrimination in rats.

N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonists share a number of pharmacological effects with GABA(A) agonists, including anxiolytic and anticonvulsant effects. This study evaluated the effects of site-selective NMDA antagonists in rats trained to discriminate the benzodiazepine diazepam from vehicle. As expected, diazepam produced robust discriminative stimulus effects and dose-dependently substituted for the training dose. Mixed results were obtained with competitive NMDA antagonists: whereas NPC 17742 partially substituted for diazepam, SDZ EAA 494 did not elicit responding on the diazepam-associa

Sound localization in subjects with impaired hearing. Spatial-discrimination and interaural-discrimination tests.

In order to get a systematic picture of how various hearing impairments and neurologic disorders may affect sound localization, psychophysical spatial- and lateralization-discrimination measurements were performed on 140 subjects, including 69 with different types of hearing impairments, 32 with neurological diseases, and 39 with normal hearing. The quantities measured were: in the freefield, the horizontal minimum audible angle (MAA) at eight reference azimuths around the head and the vertical MAA straight ahead; with headphones, the just-noticeable difference (JND) in interaural time delay a

The Erlangen Program in lateral occipital cortex: Hierarchical encoding of emergent features.

Emergent features are fundamental concepts in Gestalt psychology, yet the neural encoding of these features, particularly a quantitative understanding of their relative superiority, remains elusive. This study bridges this gap by conceptualizing emergent features through geometric transformations within the Erlangen Program, which provides a principled framework to quantify their hierarchical relationships. We propose that the lateral occipital cortex (LOC) encodes these emergent features in accordance with the geometric hierarchies defined by this program. Using fMRI and multivariate pattern

Psychometric Validation of the STEM Disciplines Attitude Scale (SDAS): Investigating Measurement Invariance and Psychological Correlates in Italian High School Students.

Promoting positive student attitudes toward STEM is essential for fostering innovation; however, many existing measures do not adequately distinguish attitudes across specific disciplines, particularly within hard sciences such as physics and chemistry. This study presents the development and validation of the STEM Disciplines Attitude Scale (SDAS). Across three studies involving 2577 high school students, Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses supported a 25-item, five-factor structure assessing attitudes toward Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, and Science and Technology. Gaming passion contributes to the definition and identification of problematic gaming.

Even if for most people playing video games is a healthy leisure activity, a minority of vulnerable users present an excessive use associated to negative consequences (e.g., psychosocial maladjustment, sleep interference) and functional impairment. The current study first aims to identify psychological factors that contribute to discriminate highly involved (but healthy) gamers from problematic gamers. For that purpose, we used a cluster analysis approach to identify different groups of gamers based on their profiles of passion towards gaming (using the Dualistic Model of Passion). Another obj

Item Reduction, Psychometric and Biometric Properties of the Italian Version of the Body Perception Questionnaire-Short Form (BPQ-SF): The BPQ-22.

Body awareness disorders and reactivity are mentioned across a range of clinical problems. Constitutional differences in the control of the bodily state are thought to generate a vulnerability to psychological symptoms. Autonomic nervous system dysfunctions have been associated with anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress. Though interoception may be a transdiagnostic mechanism promoting the improvement of clinical symptomatology, few psychometrically sound, symptom-independent, self-report measures, informed by brain-body circuits, are available for research and clinical use. We valida

Screening instruments for a population of older adults: The 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7).

Screening tools that appropriately detect older adults' mental disorders are of great public health importance. The present study aimed to establish cutoff scores for the 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress (K10) and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scales when screening for depression and anxiety. We used data from participants (n = 1811) in the Enquête sur la Santé des Aînés-Service study. Depression and anxiety were measured using DSM-V and DSM-IV criteria. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis provided an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.767 and 0.833 for

The Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination Revised as a potential screening test for elderly drivers.

Considerable research has shown that neuropsychological tests are predictive of real-world driving ability. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is a brief cognitive test that has been commonly used in the assessment of older drivers. However, this test has inherent problems that limit its validity to evaluate cognitive abilities related to driving and to screen for driving impairments in non-demented people. Therefore, it is useful to test new screening instruments that may predict potential unsafe drivers who require an in-depth neuropsychological assessment in a specialised centre. To d
