Green initiative: use of cow dung slurry for treatment of industrial effluent.

This research dives into highlighting potential usage of cow dung as a co-substrate to reduce the organic carbon load of toxic industrial effluents through batch and semi continuous anaerobic process. One such effluent stream is released during caprolactam manufacturing having pH of about 2, 0.4% ammonical nitrogen, and COD up to 55,000 mg/L which varies often. In this study, a series of laboratory-scale experiments followed by pilot level experiments were laid to treat highly toxic industrial effluent in different ratios using cow dung as co-substrate in an anaerobic setup. The basic paramete

An open-source bio-logger for studying cetacean behavior and communication.

Over the past decade, bioacoustics associated with diverse marine life has become the focus of increasing research. While fixed acoustic devices play important roles in characterizing localized soundscapes, animal-worn devices that record audio alongside physiological metrics provide richer portals to understanding cetacean communication and characterizing sounds in their environment. To facilitate scaling the collection of such multimodal datasets for deep learning applications and to encourage rapid prototyping for new recording capabilities, we present an open-source non-invasive bio-logger

Expansion of satellite DNAs derived from transposable elements in beetles with reduced diploid numbers.

Repetitive DNA sequences are ubiquitous in eukaryotic genomes, significantly influencing their structure, function, and evolution. They can facilitate genomic rearrangements, contributing to chromosomal and genomic diversity. Chrysomelidae (Coleoptera) beetles are known for their highly diverse karyotypes and heterochromatin distribution. In this study, we advanced the understanding of the intricate relationship between satellite DNA-like sequences (named here solely as satDNA) and genome organization/reshuffling using three species of Eumolpinae chrysomelids. We investigated the satellitomes

Plasticity induced loss of apnea alarm through repeated apneas: A proposed mechanism for respiratory sudden death.

We are inspired by two observations and questions. 1) In most cases of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) patients experience a fat … This apnea comfort can be induced with existing, healthy plasticity in apnea training (swimming and diving), pathologies which might mimic apnea training (repeated apneas in epilepsy, obstructive sleep apnea), or pathologies which modify the stability and feedback of the system (carotid body resection, neurodegeneration). These similarities, along with e …

Expression Analysis of Long Noncoding RNA-MALAT1 and Interleukin-6 in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) manifests as chronic inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract. The study focuses on a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) known as Metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1). MALAT1's misregulation has been linked with various autoimmune diseases and regulates proinflammatory cytokines. The role of IL6 in immune-triggered conditions, including IBD, is another focal point. In this research, the expression of MALAT1 and IL6 in IBD patients was meticulously analyzed to uncover potential interactions. The study involved 33 IBD patients (13 with C

Spatiotemporal heterogeneity of ecosystem service interactions and their drivers at different spatial scales in the Yellow River Basin.

Accurately understanding ecosystem service (ES) interactions and an analysis of the complex, multiscale driving mechanisms are foundational prerequisites for implementing effective multiscale ES management. This study dives into the spatial and temporal variations of ES interactions in the Yellow River Basin across four spatial scales. The eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model is later deployed to pinpoint the key drivers of ecosystem services and their indirect pathways to ESs are illuminated utilizing Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that

The oceanic pleuston community as a potentially crucial life-cycle pathway for pelagic fish-infecting parasitic worms.

Pleustonic organisms form an important part of pelagic ecosystems by contributing to pelagic trophic chains and supporting connectivity between oceanic habitats. This study systematically analysed the trematode community harboured by pleustonic molluscs and cnidarians from offshore Queensland, Australia. Four mollusc and three cnidarian species were collected from beaches of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland. Two mollusc species and all three cnidarians harboured large numbers of hemiuroid metacercariae (Trematoda: Hemiuroidea). Eight taxa from four hemiuroid families (Accacoeliidae, Didymoz

Selective ATM inhibition augments radiation-induced inflammatory signaling and cancer cell death.

Over half of all cancer patients undergo radiation therapy but there is an unmet need for more efficacious combination strategies with molecular targeted drugs. DNA damage response has emerged as an important intervention point for improving anti-tumor effects of radiation and several inhibitors are currently in development. Ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) kinase is a key regulator of cellular response to DNA double strand breaks and a potential target for radiosensitization. We recently reported two new potent and selective ATM inhibitors, M3541 and M4076, that effectively sensitize cance

Revision Procedure After Surgery for Atypical Hangman's Fracture Primarily Performed Only from the Posterior Approach - An Attempt to Maintain Head Rotation: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Hangman's fracture, also known as traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis, is defined as a bilateral fracture of the C2 pars interarticularis. In 1965, Schneider used this term to describe a pattern of similarities seen in fractures associated with judicial hangings. However, this fracture pattern is only observed in approximately 10% of injuries associated with hangings. CASE REPORT: We present a case of an atypical hangman's fracture caused by a headlong dive into a swimming pool and striking the pool's bottom. The patient had undergone surgery at another centre, where posteri

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia and submersion bradycardia in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Among the many factors that influence the cardiovascular adjustments of marine mammals is the act of respiration at the surface, which facilitates rapid gas exchange and tissue re-perfusion between dives. We measured heart rate (fH) in six adult male bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) spontaneously breathing at the surface to quantify the relationship between respiration and fH, and compared this with fH during submerged breath-holds. We found that dolphins exhibit a pronounced respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) during surface breathing, resulting in a rapid increase in fH after a breath
