Nickel sensitivity: the influence of ear piercing and atopy.

In a group of 612 consecutive patients undergoing routine patch tests for suspected allergic contact dermatitis, more than four-fifths of the 364 women had had their ears pierced, over half gave a history of cutaneous reactions to metallic jewelery and almost one-third were sensitive to nickel. The increase in the frequency of nickel sensitivity in women with pierced ears compared to those with unpierced ears was highly significant (P less than 0.001). In men, nickel sensitivity was much less frequent; occupational factors were often implicated and few cases were related to ear piercing. Jewel

Occupational hand eczema in an industrial city.

Hand eczema in relation to occupation was studied in an industrial city. Questionnaires were sent to 20,000 individuals aged 20-65 years, randomly selected from the population register of the city. Those subjects (1385) considering themselves to have had hand eczema within the previous 12 months were invited to a dermatological examination including patch testing. It was found that the reported 1-year period prevalence of hand eczema in the total sample was 11.8%. The only occupational group reporting a statistically significant higher 1-year period prevalence was service work, 15.4%. Among al

Some adverse effects of disulfiram in the treatment of nickel-allergic patients.

A retrospective follow-up study is reported of 58 women and 3 men with nickel allergy and hand eczema, of at least 4 months duration, treated with 50 to 400 mg disulfiram per day for 4 to 56 weeks. 2 patients were given 2 treatment series, making a total of 63 treatment series. 11 patients (20%) developed biochemical evidence of hepatotoxicity. 5 of them developed clinical evidence of hepatitis, which, for 4, was verified by liver biopsy. The patients with hepatotoxcity were significantly older than those who did not have this side effect. No correlation could be seen between the cumulative or

A novel de novo mutation p.Ala428Asp in KRT5 gene as a cause of localized epidermolysis bullosa simplex.

Epidermolysis bullosa is a group of inherited blistering skin diseases resulting in most cases from missense mutations in KRT5 and KRT14 genes encoding the basal epidermal keratins 5 and 14. Here, we present a patient diagnosed with a localized subtype of epidermolysis bullosa simplex caused by a heterozygous mutation p.Ala428Asp in the KRT5 gene, that has not been previously identified. Moreover, a bioinformatic analysis of the novel mutation was performed, showing changes in the interaction network between the proteins. Identification of novel mutations and genotype-phenotype correlations al

Factors influencing cure rates of non-dermatophyte mold and Candida onychomycosis: analysis of outcomes in 81 patients who completed treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Onychomycosis shows a poor response to current topical, oral, or device-related antifungal therapies. The aim of this study was to identify factors influencing the cure rates of non-dermatophyte mold and Candida onychomycosis. METHODS: Eighty-one patients who completed treatments were divided into "cured" and "non-cured" groups. The statistical significance of differences between the two groups was studied. RESULTS: Male gender (P < 0.01), long duration of disease before the initiation of treatment (P < 0.02), three or more infected nails (P < 0.0002), continuous exposure to wate

A study of clinical profiles of vitiligo in different ages: an analysis of 669 outpatients.

INTRODUCTION: Vitiligo is a skin disorder characterized by achromic macules (white) on the skin and/or mucous membranes, which affects 0.5-2% of the population. Few publications address a vitiligo epidemiological profile worldwide. In Brazil there are only studies in children. OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical and epidemiological profile of individuals affected by vitiligo and to evaluate behavior of the disease in different age groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study in 669 patients with vitiligo from January 2001 to May 2006, who attended the Facul

A study of leprosy reactions in a tertiary hospital in Delhi.

A retrospective study of 531 leprosy patients was undertaken to study the profile of reactions in the post Multi-Drug-Therapy period in a tertiary hospital in Delhi. BT was the most common group. The prevalence of reactions was found to be 8.09% for the Type 1 and 4.70% for the Type 2 reactions for a male:female ratio of 2.2. The Type 1 reaction was most frequently observed in the BB group followed by BL, BT and LL groups respectively. More than half of the patients had reactions at the time of presentation. In only 39.8% of the patients did reaction follow Multi-Drug-Therapy. In 4.5% of the p

Prevalence of contact sensitisation among patients with hand eczema and factors associated with contact sensitisation and disease severity.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic hand eczema is a debilitating skin disease. The aetiology of hand eczema can be due to irritant contact, allergic contact or a manifestation of endogenous eczema. Identification of sensitisers and subsequent avoidance of relevant sensitisers may improve care of chronic hand eczema patients. We aimed to study the prevalence and pattern of sensitisation, factors associated with sensitisation and severity of hand eczema. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted over a six month period between January to June 2025 at the Department of Dermatology in a ter

Mixed occupational and iatrogenic allergic contact dermatitis in a hairdresser.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common occupational disease. Hairdressers and beauticians are at increased risk of occupational chronic hand eczema. We present a case of mixed occupational, non-occupational and iatrogenic ACD in a hairdresser which illustrates that delayed diagnosis can result in high morbidity, and unnecessary treatment and cost. A hairdresser with chronic hand and facial eczema failed medical management with topical steroids and dupilumab. Patch testing revealed contact allergy to multiple occupational exposures, home exposures and topical medicaments.

The first case of fingernail onychomycosis due to Neoscytalidium novaehollandiae, molecular identification and antifungal susceptibility.

Onychomycosis is considered a fungal nail infection caused mainly by dermatophytes, yeasts and non-dermatophyte molds including dematiaceous fungi. Onychomycosis caused by non-dermatophyte molds is a health problem in the medical environment as the patients frequently return to outpatient clinics seeking new therapeutic modalities. Here, we report the first case of onychomycosis caused by a black fungus, Neoscytalidium novaehollandiae, in the right hand finger nail of a 52-year-old Iranian female with no history of immunodeficiency and underlying disease. The pattern of nail involvement was re

The Use of an Over-the-Counter Hand Cream With Sweet Almond Oil for the Treatment of Hand Dermatitis.

Hand dermatitis is estimated to affect greater than 15% of the general population. Childhood eczema, frequent hand washing, and occupational exposure to chemicals are predisposing factors. Hand dermatitis treatment involves both prevention of outbreaks and treatment of active disease. Moisturizers are essential to protect the skin from the environment, enhance hydration, and repair the skin barrier. They have been shown in large studies to prevent occupational related breakouts. Natural oils are commonly used in moisturizers for their moisturizing and emollient properties. Sweet almond oil is
