BACKGROUND: Although vascular disease is commonly accepted as a risk factor for wound complications and prosthetic joint infections, little is known about the preoperative prevalence of lower-extremity peripheral vascular disease in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). In this study, we investigated the prevalence of asymptomatic vascular disease and its risk factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1,000 knees of 692 patients who underwent primary TKA due to osteoarthritis were preoperatively evaluated by experienced musculoskeletal radiologists using Doppler ultrasonography

PURPOSE: Anorexia (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN) are two common eating disorders, which appear to share some reduced motor capacities, such as a reduced balance. The presence and the extent of other motor disorders have not been investigated in a comprehensive way. The aim of this study was to quantify gait pattern in AN and BN individuals in order to ascertain possible differences from the normality range and provide novel data for developing some evidence-based rehabilitation strategies.
METHODS: Nineteen AN patients (age 30.16+9.73) and 20 BN patients (age 26.8+8.41) were assessed with quan

BACKGROUND: Patients with musculoskeletal pain syndrome including fibromyalgia (FM) complain of chronic pain from deep tissues including muscles. Previous research suggests the relevance of impulse input from deep tissues for clinical FM pain. We hypothesized that blocking abnormal impulse input with intramuscular lidocaine would decrease primary and secondary hyperalgesia and FM patients' clinical pain.
METHODS: We enrolled 62 female patients with FM into a double-blind controlled study of three groups who received 100 or 200 mg of lidocaine or saline injections into both trapezius and glute

The objective of this study was to characterize the prevalence, demographic risk factors, and malformations associated with agenesis and hypoplasia of the corpus callosum diagnosed in infancy. Using a large population-based registry of birth defects, we ascertained 630 cases of agenesis (ACC) and hypoplasia (HCC) of the corpus callosum diagnosed in the first year of life among 3.4 million live births from 1983 to 2003. Infants with destructive lesions or specific complex central nervous system (CNS) malformations (neural tube defects, lissencephaly, and holoprosencephaly) were excluded. Multiv

BACKGROUND: Injury of a popliteal fossa artery during orthopaedic knee surgery is very rare but has serious consequences. The risk of vascular trauma during orthopaedic procedures may be increased when there is abnormal branching of the popliteal artery with an aberrant anterior tibial artery originating above the popliteus muscle and coursing between the posterior tibial cortex and ventral margin of the popliteus muscle. Preoperative identification of this anatomical variant may help avoid these injuries.
HYPOTHESIS: The aberrant anterior tibial artery is present in a substantial portion of

BACKGROUND: One of the diagnostic characteristics of the manipulable spinal lesion--a musculoskeletal disturbance detected by manual palpation and corrected with manipulation--is said to be altered segmental tissue texture. Various manual therapy authors have speculated on the possible nature of this tissue change, with some authors hypothesizing that it represents deep segmental muscle overactivity.
OBJECTIVES: To review the literature relating to the detection and nature of altered paraspinal tissue texture, proposed explanations for altered tissue texture, evidence for the plausibility of

BACKGROUND: Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) and restless legs syndrome (RLS) are two sleep disorders characterized by abnormal leg movements and are responsible for deterioration in sleep quality. However, the prevalence of these disorders is not well known in the general population. This study aims to document the prevalence of RLS and PLMD in the general population and to identify factors associated with these conditions.
METHODS: Cross-sectional studies were performed in the UK, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain. Overall, 18,980 subjects aged 15 to 100 years old representative of t

PURPOSE: To study etiologic aspects of hip dysplasia in a colony of Dutch-belted rabbits.
METHODS: Rabbits used in the study were part of a reproductive toxicologic study. Incidence of hip dysplasia among 296 Dutch-Belted rabbit kits raised on waxed cardboard, smooth Plexiglas, or Plexiglas covered with textured adhesive strips was recorded. All animals were examined at 2 to 4 weeks of age for inability to adduct one or more limbs, then were classified as normal or dysplastic. A subset of 16 juvenile male rabbits (4 normal, 12 affected) raised on Plexiglas flooring were given a physical exami

Spondylocarpotarsal synostosis syndrome (SCT) is a distinct group of disorders characterized by short stature, disrupted vertebral segmentation with vertebral fusion, scoliosis, lordosis, carpal/tarsal synostosis, and lack of rib anomalies. Mutations in filamin B (FLNB) and MYH3 have been reported for autosomal-recessive and autosomal-dominant SCT, respectively. We present a family with two patients suffering from autosomal-recessive SCT with rib anomalies, including malalignment, crowding, and uneven size and shape of ribs. Whole-exome sequencing revealed a novel p.S2542Lfs* 82 (c.7621dup) fr

Thalidomide, a sedative drug given to pregnant women, unfortunately caused limb deformities in thousands of babies. Recently the drug was revived because of its therapeutic potential; however the search is still ongoing for an antidote against thalidomide induced limb deformities. In the current study we found that nitric oxide (NO) rescues thalidomide affected chick (Gallus gallus) and zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. This study confirms that NO reduced the number of thalidomide mediated limb deformities by 94% and 80% in chick and zebrafish embryos respectively. NO prevents limb deformities

OBJECTIVE: This article discusses the imaging findings, clinical findings, and conservative chiropractic management of 2 patients with glenoid hypoplasia.
CLINICAL FEATURES: Conventional radiographs of both patients revealed a hypoplastic glenoid bilaterally. Notch-like defects along with signs of degenerative disease were evident within the lower portion of the glenoid rims bilaterally in 1 patient and in the left glenoid rim of the other patient. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a degenerative cyst or cortical defect in one patient along the anterior humeral head. The second patient show

In this communication, we report the identification of a mosaic R248C missense mutation in the IgII-III linker region of the gene encoding the fibroblast growth factor receptor-3 (FGFR3), in an individual who manifests a skeletal dysplasia and epidermal hyperplasia. By means of Denaturing High Performance Liquid Chromatography (DHPLC), we determined that 25% of her lymphocytes are heterozygous for this particular missense mutation in FGFR3, and that 12.5% of her lymphocyte-derived genomic DNA encodes a cysteine residue at this position. The proposita has disproportionate short stature, radial

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS; OMIM 260400) is an autosomal recessive disorder with clinical features that include pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, hematological dysfunction and skeletal abnormalities. Here, we report identification of disease-associated mutations in an uncharacterized gene, SBDS, in the interval of 1.9 cM at 7q11 previously shown to be associated with the disease. We report that SBDS has a 1.6-kb transcript and encodes a predicted protein of 250 amino acids. A pseudogene copy (SBDSP) with 97% nucleotide sequence identity resides in a locally duplicated genomic segment of
